• Philadelphia to Install Free Condom Dispensers in High Schools
Philadelphia is installing condom dispensers in 22 city high schools where students as young as 14 will be able to receive condoms for free in an effort to combat an "epidemic" of sexually transmitted disease among the city's teenagers. Students returning to school from Christmas break will find clear plastic dispensers filled with condoms in the offices of nurses whose schools have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases. "We believe distributing condoms is part of our obligation to keep students healthy and to remain healthy," said school district spokesman Fernando Gallard. "The health department has described this as a continued epidemic of STDs among teenagers in Philadelphia." Condoms have in the past been provided to students in Philadelphia as part of wider program in which the teenagers are provided "free, voluntary and confidential" testing for sexual diseases in their schools, Gallard said. It was the results of those tests that led officials to launch the current program to distribute condoms regularly in schools instead of once a year when the tests are administered. Of the 130,000 student who have received testing in the last five years, some 6,500 or 5 percent of them have tested positive for diseases including HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Parents were made aware of the distribution program in October and were given the chance to opt their children out of receiving the prophylactics. Gallard said the school district has not received "specific calls" from parents objecting to the program. The total number of parents who chose to disallow their children from receiving condoms, however, is unknown. According to Advocates for Youth, a nonprofit organization that advocates for sexual health among young people, there are at least 418 schools nationwide providing condoms. In August, despite outrage from some parents, the school board in Springfield, Mass., approved a plan to distribute condoms in public high schools, as well as middle schools, providing free contraception to students as young as 11. Philadelphia has plans to expand condom distribution to more schools, but has no plans to introduce prophylactics to middle schoolers, Gallard told ABCNews.com.
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/philadelphia-install-free-condom-dispensers-22-schools/story?id=18068052#.UN1IpW9OTh5 No fleshlights?
I'm pretty sure you can already get free condoms from the nurses at most schools. Maybe not in Philly though. Putting condom dispensers in the bathrooms would be dumb as fuck though, especially if it's free. They'll be gone in less than 24 hours after one of the kids goes 'huehuehueuhe dis gon b gud' and spreads condoms all over campus.
Cant wait to go to school and find condom balloons everywhere

I give it a week before they're completely empty and torn off the walls.
Unless they're putting Trojan condoms in those dispensers, this isn't much of a good thing. The generic "city" condoms handed out in schools are cheaply made and don't hold up too well under stress (unless you just want to make water balloons.) Have fun watching kids use these shitty condoms and then everyone gets pregnant anyway.

bbbbut this promotes sex and makes teenagers animals and satan

There's so many free condoms in philly and like 90% are Trojans it's so great.
The fucking comments on this article.
Is it a requirement to be "laid" by the time your 16? Do all high-schools have daycares in them now? How fast are we going in the wrong direction. The city cuts so many after school activities that there is nothing for high schoolers to do but have sex. But what I feel should be done, is to teach young women to act like ladies. And have young male students cary a 10lb. plastic infant doll arounf when they are freshmen and sophmores. This will show them the after-affects of having sex.

I have an idea....How about we put BOOKS in Philly schools. Just a thought.

How about teaching the kids to abstain! Not give them permission to do what they are not supposed to do.
Makes my head hurt. [editline]03:51[/editline] Kids are going to have sex whether you try to prevent it or not. Yes, the school system shouldn't be doing this. It should be the irresponsible parents who are telling their kids "don't have sex" and leave it at that who should be handling it.

I mean honestly, I think it's safe to assume the majority of people who comment like that and hold opinions like that base said opinions on their religious views, but what always bothers me about the "abstain" argument, that is, "just don't do it, it's bad" mind set, is that, assuming they are religious, shouldn't they realize that outright trying to ban something isn't going to work? Going off their texts, I'm pretty sure the highest authority in existence told two peon humans not to do something, and they ended up doing it. I think it's safe to say, based on research, and based on religious texts, that trying to outright limit things, doesn't really work too well.
Everyone assumes it'll just be some automatic dispenser with no control. I imagine they will likely provide a system in which you have a card or whatever that only gives a certain amount out per 24 hours, or at least tracks who takes how many so they can regulate it a bit more.

Imagen the ques at the end of class on fridays.
free giant water balloons
Or you could be like me and haven't even kissed a girl yet :(
They apparently have one of these at the college I go to (They have children aged 14+) there, I have no idea where it is though.
This is probably one of the better idea's I've heard of.
Maybe I'm being a dick, but I don't like this. I think if people want to do stupid crap then that's their decision and they can pay the price for it. You can rate Disagree if I'm being a jerk and kindly explain why I'm wrong.

It's completely natural and since we've developed ways for people to enjoy sex while not causing pregnancy or the spread of STDs, teenagers should have the ability to use them. You can't stop teenagers from having sex, and just letting them spread STDs and get each other pregnant isn't going to stop them. Teenagers are very horny and it's better if we can prevent them from building up a shitload of sexual frustration.

I guess I'm still stuck in society's apparent shame of everything sexual. Also, this made me giggle.
And even if it wasn't something natural, why in the world should we let people helpless even if it's their own fault? Should we stop providing health care to wannabe daredevils? Are lost and found services useless?

There will be many a condom balloon on that day. Don't get me wrong, this is a good initiative, but many teenagers are incredibly immature and this will be abused. They should at least cost 10 cents or something so that wastage will be cut down on. [editline]28th December 2012[/editline]
Maybe I'm being a dick, but I don't like this. This makes a lot of sense; it's pretty hard to stomp out and prevent the whole underage sex thing from happening (even if it seems quite iffy), so the next best thing is to encourage them to "play it safe" by using protection. I don't like it that kids are doing it too young, although that's probably a societal thing, but outright direct prevention of it is pretty much impossible without having omnipresent mind-readers like in Minority Report, and since we don't have such things (which is good since we shouldn't be spied on) the next best thing is making sure that they don't spread anything dangerous amongst themselves. That said, schools need better sex ed and whatnot to help prevent underage/unsafe sex, and whilst we're at it ensure that religious studies is translated into "Global Mythologies", helping the kids to know that religion is societal dogma wrapped up in fantasy fiction. Hopefully, this'd mean that the kids would wait until they're actually of age before they start banging, and they wouldn't end up joining one of those ghastly cults that worship the sun or a cornucopia of nature spirits (polytheistic religions like Hinduism are included); it's alright to appreciate religion as entertaining stories, but we should not take them too seriously in case some goyte starts up another Sagan-damned church. Also solidarity needs to be taught on a massive scale for great justice, so that later generations will be more willing to help their fellow man and help prevent shit like the current state of the union from ever happening again. Let these following words echo down the ages; beware the cultist, the conservative, the capitalist, for they shall lead your people to ruin. Look after each other, even if they are not of your creed; united we stand firm, divided we fall into madness.
