Essex girls have finally tired of being the butt of jokes and are fighting back against their "much maligned" image of white stiletto-heeled dimwits.
A charity known as the Essex Women's Advisory Group has been set up by local ladies Daphne Field and Elizabeth Hart, chairman of Essex County Council, who says the teasing is beyond a joke.
"Our girls are bright and fun, but then you see them crumble when people start putting them down for where they come from," Mrs Hart said.
"When my daughter was 20, she told someone at a job interview she was from Essex and she could almost see him turn his nose up."
Her own particular ire was raised when she heard Ann Robinson being particularly dismissive on The Weakest Link.
"Are you from Essex?," Ann Robinson asked a contestant. "Do you have white stiletto heels? Do you dance around your handbag?"
The group - Ewag for short - was subsequently set up and is beginning to raise money for charities close to the Essex women's heart.
Ewag's main aim is to "empower the girls who live in Essex, to broaden their vision, self-worth and belief".
Project leader Daphne Field, 70, is passionate about the cause.
"There are so many successful girls in Essex and we want to promote this."
Essex girls often claim to come from anywhere but their real county, she points out.
"It is not unknown for them to answer that they come from East Anglia or outside London, rather than from Essex.
"But there is nothing wrong with being an Essex girl."
The charity is not only aiming to empower its girls, it is also raising money for other interests close to the Essex heart.
"We have now got £38,000 and it is benefiting the women's refuges in Essex for vulnerable women, as well as the Girl Guides and the girls in the Essex Prince's Trust.
"We are holding lots of fundraising events. We need to promote Essex."
Uh but for the most part it's true. I mean Jodie Marsh is a real role model.
Only in Britain

Go and die.
Good grief. I was born in Chelmsford, Essex. So technically I'm an "Essex girl" but my parents moved when I was about 4 years old.
If someone from where I live now hears I am from Essex they do comment "Essex girl" and I usually just laugh. I don't see why any of them are getting butthurt. You don't need to justify your intelligence to anyone because you come from Essex.
If you think Essex girls are bad you should see some of the Essex guys.

omg a gurl
This is so stupid.
I feel like I'm missing something here, What's wrong with being a female and being born in Essex?
What did the pregnant Essex girl say? 'I wonder if it's mine.'

That doesn't make any sense.

Just the stereotyping. There are those that fit the description beautifully and those that are nothing like the traditional "Essex girl".

It actually made perfect sense. Also; I laughed.
I guess Essex girl is the UK equivalent of Valley girl here in the US.
I want on holiday to Essex a couple of months back (I know right, it's shit) and most, if not every girl between the ages of 16 and 35 there was fucking retarded. Atleast, everyone I met.
haha my dad lives in the same town as jodie marsh and lets just say the stereotype is not a lie.

More like a Jersey girl from what I've read.
Good job at proving a stereotype.
More like a Jersey girl from what I've read.
Jersey girls have this horrible accent that kills me on the inside.
"Hehllo, Iwe'm frwom Jawsey."
And yeah, for the most part, you're right.
Essexism.

no its just a shit joke
[editline]11:31AM[/editline]
also why are they trying to fight a stereotype, it's pointless
I can half sympathise with them, I mean I am not an essex girl but I get my fair share of stereotype jokes that are almost identical to the essex girl ones.
However I think this is going a bit far and just encouraging people to make the jokes even more.
Fuck yeah, Essex!
It's a shame that there's so many, a scant few are brilliant girls but the rest just make the county look bad as a whole. Not that hard mind you >.>
I live in Essex, have dpne my whole life.
We have a very special breed of mouth-breather here, dumber than a sack of rocks and about the same to look at. Romford on a friday night is a very special thing indeed.
truth hurts

True that, closest I get is Vange, it's still godawful. I went Ice Skating witha few friends last Friday and we saw a gang of 11 year olds smoking and a 14 year old girl next to them, slumped on a bench with a bottle of Jack Daniels outside the rink. It was...Really, if you do that to yourself, how can you complain when people brand you as dumb?
EWAGS make them sound like a bunch of footballer's wives.
Actually, that's pretty accurate.
omg a gurl
It's not. Ii's just the internet.
It's probably because Essex has the word "Sex" in it and people can't stop thinking it is funny when somebody from there says it casually.

How can you be sure that they are 11 year olds? for all you know they could be just 13 or 15.
For what I have noticed is that the biggest smokers tend to be either really fucking tall, or really fucking small.
