Greetings Facepunch!
I come here to inform you of the situation in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone is situated in Western Africa with its capital, Freetown.

Sierra Leone has recently endured a civil war that lasted from 1992 until 2002. It left countless dead and poverty in its wake. Because of this, many contractors that were originally building water wells before the war were forced out of the country. Due to the country's instability they never returned. Many villages were left with unfinished or broken wells and were forced to find water else were. Local water holes and ponds were often used as drinking water sources. The stagnant water sources often harbored different types of parasites and infections and were usually extremely polluted.

The economic state of the country did not allow these villagers who had become ill to receive medical treatment. Sierra Leone is one of the poorest nations on the Earth, holds one of the highest infant mortality rates, and more than 70% of the population lives below the poverty line.
In my high school civics class we were asked to create a project in which it would help improve the state of either our community, our country, or other countries. Our group stumbled upon the website of an NGO (Non-Government Organization) called The Water Project. We researched the countries they were active in and decided that Sierra Leone would be the optimal choice. What the Water Project does is it goes into impoverished countries and helps supply clean water to villages in those countries. It costs roughly $3,500 to repair one well for one village.
Our school has raised almost $500 for this cause, I personally have put forth $40 towards building a well. The money is still being counted and will be sent in a couple of days. I ask of you Facepunch, will you donate to this cause? Even a penny will help and overall it will improve the lives of those in Sierra Leone. Even if you choose not to donate I hope I have educated some of you and even that will have helped.
Thank you.

I thought this was going to be some sort of art project involving water created by the daughter of film-maker Sergio Leone but this is important too.
This is a crucial issue and I hope your project succeeds with great care.
Who calls their capital freetown? What a dumb name for any capital.

I wish Africa would just sink
It would be the best thing to happen to that continent in a thousand years. How many Billions of dollars has been completely wasted on that place anyway, and I do mean wasted, so very little of anything that's sent is put in the hands of those it was supposed to go to

But then over a billion people would be dead or forced too migrate. :colbert:
41 Million people died world wide last year alone

Dude thats horrible!
That'll just flood the rest of the world. It would be cool if Africa could be self suffecient like it was some 600 or whatever years ago.
Believe it or not, Africa used to host many thriving nations. Like the Songhai and Mali empires.
It may sound douchy but I feel donating money to Africa is a giant waste of money and time.
It sounds horrible but it is the reality of it. It is a lost cause, like the post above, when you see those Just a quarter a day commercials, how much of your quarter a day do you think the children they try to suck you in with actually benefit from it?

While agree that a lot of areas in Africa are corrupt and the money does not go to the people in need, I don't think killing everyone in Africa is a viable solution. While I don't have an answer as to what would be the best method of bringing change to Africa, I think that new innovative solutions should be created.
Silly, we can't kill everyone in Africa. We need their minerals. And the slave labor to get it.

The problem with Africa is because of the environment; not because of the people.
Because of the tropical type of climate and the intense humidity, it's so easy for infection and viruses to spread. Combating this is just about impossible solely because there's so many people who need to be treated and there's simply not enough supplies circulated in the first place to take care of it.
Secondly, desertification is taking over. Those lush places will eventually be engulfed by the Sahara and the entire continent will become nothing but a huge drought. I would imagine there being a dustbowl of sorts happening, too, because of the attempts to produce crops.
It's a shame what's going to happen to that continent but what's worse is that the efforts look effortless because the environment is so unforgiving.
And that's why I love being from a country that had nothing to do with fucking up the rest of the world :) Makes me proud.
fuck that shit, i heard they have a load of diamonds and shit
Teach them how to use condoms.
Blame Europe.
They colonized the place, made it shit.
Beforehand you got the Empires of Songhai, Mali, Swahili, etc... all of which were prosperous.
In fact so prosperous, that when King Mansa Musa of Mali took a pilgrimage to Mecca, he dumped so much gold in Egypt that it literally caused hyper inflation across ALL of north Africa.
The kingdom of Kongo had large cities and a booming economy.
Then Europe began fucking up the place by buying slaves like a motherfucker, then outright conquered the place and practiced genocide.
In Kongo, King Leopold II caused royal families to live in mud huts. 10 Million people died due to overworking and outright execution.
He forced the entire populace to harvest rubber day and night. The penalty for the death of a rubber vine was death. The penalty for not meeting a quota or not working "hard enough" was to be tied up and beaten with a specialized whip, which I can't remember the name of.
many of the supplies sent to africa end up in the warlords or goverments hands anyway. it's a lost cause it is. Unless they change their mindset there's nothign we can do.
that place is a corrupted, tribalist shithole, it is.
I sent all my old school books to Sierra Leone because they have to pay for their paper over there.
Africa is dead.
how many decades have we been providing "aid" now? Well it clearly isn't working.

It is, the situation in Africa is steadily improving.
Then you get the Christian companies showing the fly covered kids and you cant help but feel shame. Shame on the companies that try to suck you in to paying a quarter a day which probably only goes towards the CEO's 6 figure salary.
I blame people for this, they're dicks, all of them.
