I was just dicking around with some stock footage today and figured I'd put some effort into a grenade explosion.

I don't do effects like these very often, considering I have to borrow my HD camera from work... So, what do you guys think? Yay or Nay?

Now that I look at it, you're right. It just appears, rather than emanating out from the explosion. Thanks for the critique, I'll be back in a moment.
There's less flames to a grenade explosion and more smoke and debris.

Thanks for the advise everybody. I've got an explosion with less flames and better lighting on the way.
It's a bit slow; the explosion should EXPLODE, not puff out like it did.

try reducing the fire that comes out, grenades usually just throw shrapnel
The explosion from a grenade is nearly instant, it's over in less than 0,5 seconds or so. Yours seems to linger on for quite a while and even has flames. A real grenade doesn't make flames like that. I suggest you take a look at youtube videos of high explosives (that are not rendered).

It should be a very quick flash with quite a bit of fragmentation and dust, make it quicker and less fiery.
Needs a bit less bounce, think about how a heavy grenade would move. It would roll more.
In one word: Slow.
The way everything comes out of the grenade is just slower than what it would be.
Too much fire too, thats about it really.
