A [I]fantastic[/I] sci-fi series, Babylon 5 is a 90s Space Opera Epic that I ask everyone to watch through if you enjoy great Sci-fi.
Babylon 5 is the best scifi put to television, period.
Its a fantastic show, its a shame it hasn't aged very well at all

The only thing that hasn't aged well is the CGI and even then I still sort of like it despite it being antiquated, besides, you don't watch it for the flashy effects, you watch it for the story and that is still absolutely fantastic and has aged tremendously well.
It's a show that managed to tell an epic space opera on a very strict budget and still looks good (CGI notwithstanding) to this day.
I never really watch Babylon 5, I could only watch what was on the 14 channels I had in the 90s. I think I'll check it out now.

The story and its warnings about nationalism are probably more relevant now than ever I agree
The CGI is so old it will probably put people off, even though how some of the space battles play out are still some some of the best in sci-fi history.
The themes are what make the show great and sometimes I wish it had a spiritual successor
The first season of B5 was a little rough IMO but after that, it sucks you right in. JMS did a great job of making it feel like a believable world full of relatable characters.
Man, I need to go back and rewatch it now.

Once you get invested in the story, at least, the CGI stops mattering as much. Might be cause I grew up on it though...

I think Farscape gives it a very real run for the money, and outright beats Babylon in some respects.
Farscape does a great job of messing with your preconceived notions. Scorpius looks like the most generic black leather one dimensional cliche villain, but is actually one of the most deep and interesting characters seen in any sci-fi show.

DS9 did get better, then it got... off track the last season, though Marc Alaimo and Avery Brooks knocked that shit out of the park.
The first three seasons are raw garbage though minus Tosk and Duet and that's about it.

Farscape was an amazing character study, but by the two showrunner's own admissions some stuff was just like HAHAHAHHAHA *bong noises* HAVE AN EPISODE BROOOOOOOO..... *bong noises*

You can, but as has already been mentioned, season 1 gets off to a bit of an iffy start. Past that initial hurdle it's smooth sailing.

DS9 is also a knock off of Babylon 5. It was created by taking parts of the original Babylon 5 pitch to the studio

Can you cite this? I'd be interested to learn more. Everything I've read about their history was that Berman and Piller were not aware of Babylon 5 when developing DS9, though Paramount's executives may "have guided the development with the intention of co-opting Babylon 5."
I've also been meaning to check this show out cause I've heard really great things about it and DS9 is my favorite Trek by far. Is this video spoiler safe?

B5 was pitched to paramount where they gave them some rough drafts of the work they were doing but turned it down. What happens afterwards is speculation but Paramount probably liked the idea but thought they could sell it under the Star Trek name which was pretty hype at the time since TNG was on fire.

There are differences, but you get some really good stories about the human condition. Some minor spoilers, one episode is called "Believers", where a kid needs surgery but his religion prevents it.
Like DS9, things "escalate".

i think the cgi is pretty good for a 90'2 show and considering the early stuff was done on fucking amigas
Anyone have a good suggestion for viewing order, including the pilot and movies and whatever? I don't so much care about in-canon chronology as much as a best-viewed-in order and there were so many suggestions online it defo didn't help my headache last night.
Just watch it in the order it aired in and call it a day (or week).
No need to get obsessive about it on your first run through. Some stuff is going to be confusing if you don't have the framing of the opening episodes to outline the general themes of the universe.

I used that when I got the box set, took me a few months to get through it all. It was probably one of the best series I've ever watched.
