So I was bored on Saturday and I found some old Bromide tablets that we used to put in our spa. I crushed a quarter of one up and added a bit of Metho to it to see if would explode or some shit (it is an oxidizer) it didn't.
I waited a bit while it burnt and then it suddenly did something, the fire went out and it fizzled, popped and created a brown plume of smoke. As soon as I tried to go near it my eyes started to sting and I couldn't breathe. I moved away and got my Russian GP5 gas mask.
When I came back it was a puddle of black tarry stuff in the bottom of the container... it still smelt and hurt my eyes. I put on the mask and crushed up two tablets... a lot more smoke this time. Later that day I looked it up on the web and found out.
Xylyl bromide, T-stoff or methylbenzyl bromide, was used as a tear gas in World War I under the name Weisskreuz (white cross). It was a popular agent due to its easy manufacture. Its first effective use in battle is dated to August 1914, in the battle of Ypres, when the French used tear gas grenades with xylyl bromide on Germans.
Xylyl bromide was the active ingredient in the T-shell, an artillery shell with explosive in its front part, filled with the liquid agent and named after Hans von Tappen, its inventor. On January 30, 1915, it was used against Russians.
Gas masks offered good protection against xylyl bromide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylyl_bromide
whuupsies
EDIT: Shouldn't you have put the mask on first?
I didn't know what it would do.
Wow, that's actually pretty cool and unexpected.
Well I will concede that actually is fairly cool.
Haha. At least it wasn't mustard gas... One whip of that shit you would be dead.
Sure it's not harmful?
Tear gas is just for crowd control, pretty sure it doesn't have lasting effects.
It's like soap in the eyes.
That's actually pretty awesome.

oh no my eyes fjkdjfksjhjjjjjjjsdss
also tear gas is good for you
Maybe you'll think twice about randomly tossing shit together without proper protection next time.
Thank god you had a gas mask.
But what if you didn't.. :colbert:
You learned a new recipe: Tear Gas.
But on the serious side, you now know what not to mix for your own safety, and what to mix if you wanna wage chemical warfare. Not that I would recommend the latter, obviously.
thats pritty damn cool
I want some tear gas.
Good job mixing random chemicals together without any protection or even knowing what you were doing.
Kind of a shame it didn't blow you up, would have cleaned up the gene pool a wee bit.

He obviously knows enough about chemical reactions (oxidation and redox reactions) to be intelligent. Somehow I doubt him dying would be the best solution to a lack of caution.
hmm just dont make any of these

Russian GP5 gas masks are outdated and useless. See www.approvedgasmasks.com.
Well now you know to use protection.

morelike painful burns but okay.

and possible blindness

His basic chemical knowledge should really be far out-weighed by his stupidity, no?
Good job OP, now make more tear gas and raid your neighborhood :buddy:
Good job you were a nerd with a gasmask then.
Your Gasmask wouldn't do shit. GP5's are useless in bio warfare now because of how old they are and how most filters are useless. And you can also make teargas out of tabasco and... Yeah..
Good thing you didn't create something highly poisonous, because your were kind of a little bit silly to breath in a foreign smoke.
Why did you have a fucking gasmask?
His basic chemical knowledge should really be far out-weighed by his stupidity, no?
No, because he made a mistake and learned from it presumably. It's what makes humans the top of the food chain, we're adaptable to change and we learn very quickly.

Except when we die.
What if he'd made something that had actually harmed him?
He's still an idiot.
This is pretty fucking stupid. Don't do this kind of thing unless you know exactly what you're doing.
