A group of amateur developers going by the name Outer Heaven is currently working on a remake of the original Metal Gear from 1988, and it recently received Konami’s blessing.
A lot of the time publishers who own the rights to old games send cease-and-desist letters when they hear about something like this (Square Enix shutting down the Chrono Trigger remake Chrono Resurrection comes to mind), but Outer Heaven recently announced it got word from Konami that it’s free to continue its work under one condition: Outer Heaven can’t make a profit or accept donations for the project.
ModDB page, they're using the Alien Swarm engine
i guess this confirms that konami/kojima has no current plans on remaking mg and mg2 with the fox engine.
this feels like it's the first fan project ever that's not been dmca'd after 5 minutes

I think with that green light, these guys will have a rather fast development time and won't fall into limbo.
As someone who has never played the real original Metal Gear(just the NES version, which from everything I've read is quite different) and missed out on getting it with MGS3: Subsistence(I got MGS: Essentials, which was just the games themselves), this interests me. Wonder how true to the original it will be and all that jazz.

Quite a few Sierra games got free remakes approved by Sierra.

The King's Quest remakes actually got Graham's VA from KQ5

There's a lot of room of improvement over the original game, so I assume there will be quite a few changes made.
I wonder if the devs would get some help from Kojima Productions. The idea of Kojima and company helping with fan-made content sounds awesome.
It'd be great if David Hayter lent his voice to the project :v:

You haven't seen very many then
like for example the dozens of Star Wars and Star Trek projects made
a fan made Bridge Commander should be out fairly soon as well
This could be very cool. Interesting they're using Alien Swarm. It's funny how many people honestly don't even know these games exist (MG1 / MG2:SS) so widespread knowledge is awesome.

Can we leave this part intact?

If it starts showing significant progress, there isn't a doubt in my mind. Pretty sure the dude loves playing Snake.
Do you remember how fucking salty he got over Kiefer's casting?

I love David Hayter to death but I wish we could let the poor guy be
it'd just look bad I think if he read for Solid in this, I don't know

Still,I always like video game companies who support their fans' work.

He gave up half his paycheck to get the original cast back for Twin Snakes.

Sure I think Konami or Kojima could've handled the situation much much better than this, but I'm sure it's not the end for Hayter as Snake.
That being said, I for one, welcome our new Sutherland overlord as Big Boss.
I might get dumbed for this for impatience but so far I'm not impressed by Keifer

Highly unlikely it will even have voice acting if they are trying to be somewhat authentic. This is supposed to be Metal Gear, not Metal Gear Solid.

Well aware of that. Well aware they are using a modern engine as well. Just that I feel they might want to make it more authentic(as in no voice acting since the original didn't have it). That's all, as well as speculation at this time.

Shoot Gunner? Must be a lost cousin of mine.
This is still neat. Can't go wrong with new and redone Kojima.

He got...salty over Kiefer's casting? I recall only some disturbingly casual tweets about it from him.

They had vacancies for Voice Actors on the modDB page so I can only assume they are going to have voice acting.

If they did, it would be a few years down the line on a possibly upgraded FOX Engine with Hollywood actors. I could imagine the story being revised and expanded to fit in with the later games too. I doubt a fan-remake would stand up to it if Konami made their own.
Maybe there is hope for JBEP3 being Greenlighted :v:

Only if this is included as well:
