Texas school police ticketing students as young as 6
School police officers in Texas are doling out more tickets to children as young as 6, who under past disciplinary practices would have been sent to the principal's office instead, according to a report by a Texas nonprofit.
"Disrupting class, using profanity, misbehaving on a school bus, student fights, and truancy once meant a trip to the principal's office. Today, such misbehavior results in a Class C misdemeanor ticket and a trip to court for thousands of Texas students and their families each year," says the Appleseed Texas report (PDF). It examined data from 22 of the state's largest school districts and eight municipal courts.
Over six years, school police issued 1,000 tickets to elementary school children in 10 school districts.
The study found that where a child attends school -- not the severity of the allegation -- was the best indicator of whether the child would be ticketed instead of sent to the principal's office. Black students and special education students were overrepresented among those ticketed.

I dunno but when I was in elementary school, being a bitch didn't mean breaking the law.
Isn't that against the 8th amendment?
This is a good thing.
Getting a ticket for profanity is stupid.
I should be able to say what I want.
What the fuck is school police even?
I don't think we have that here in the Netherlands.
While I agree the punishment for students who disrupt lessons need to be addressed, taking a small child to court over something which in contrast is a significantly trivial manner seems to be a massive waste of everyones time, energy and money.

Didn't even know we had this in Ohio
"Disrupting class, using profanity, misbehaving on a school bus, student fights, and truancy
A school fight between 2 six year olds is not something worth ticketing and it shouldnt be illegal to curse.
What a waste of not only resources but time as well.
It's Texas...so...
What a waste of time and money for pretty much everyone. Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to ticket children and take them to court?
Haha.That's so racist.

officers that work in the school
they make sure the students, staff, etc. are safe
Gotta fill that budget hole somehow
Probably for the better, it'll teach the cunts that don't do shit in class except annoy others. It will keep out a bunch of crap.
Too bad they weren't allowed to use the belt on some kids these days, maybe they wouldn't be the wise asses they are now.
I live in Texas and have not heard of this at all from my younger siblings. Might look into this.

The fact that America has them and the Netherlands doesn't says volumes about both countries

That one has a massive population with varying degrees of crime in certain communities and the other just doesn't care about keeping children safe?
Not to mention I doubt he knows the state of every school in his country.

though how is ticketing for profanity even legal
Shit sucks for Austin ISD.
Leander > All
Next thing you know they will ticket kids in class for breathing in class.

land of the free home of the brave :patriot:
because making a child go to court over something small is thebest thing to do
Pretty sure ticketing for profanity is against the first amendment, thank you.
What a wonderful solution to our over-taxed court system. Nothing frees up court time like forcing more people to go for trivialities. My state is so stupid at times.
Lol Texas, you so silly and backwards
"Sir, please pull over your Power Wheel. You failed to stop at the stop sign."
My aunt teaches in Texas. When a child becomes aggressive or tries to attack her, she cannot touch the child. She has to hold her hands in the air and call for help from one of the school officers. This seems kind of like an exchange. The teachers won't engage in severe discipline, but the government will.

What do you have to do to piss off a child that badly in class? Not give him a gold sticker?
This is a good thing.
You do realize that these children are being sent to municipal courts instead of juvenile courts where they would have more protections, are imposing fines on parents ranging anywhere from $60-500 plus court fees per offense (which some children won't care about, especially considering that it isn't their money), are trying children (as low as four if you read the actual report) who literally don't have the mental capacity to discern between a person delivering a punishment and the punishment itself (which will likely lead to mistrust of the entire legal system or distaste for authoritative figures down the road), and are issuing these misdemeanors for profanity; correct?
How the fuck is this a good thing?
