I actually did this myself today, was on my second playthrough and wasn't really up for a pvp fight at the time, so I sat behind a column in a fairly open room. Guy walked in twice and didn't bother looking around, he eventually gave up and left. Ah little victories.
Dark Souls is probably one of my favorite games that I don't actually play, right up there with Eve Online.
