• Can games, movies and music affect people?

Maybe you have seen somewhere in the papers or in the tv news about this maniac who killed several people? Also the same news channel mentions that the person listened to "Backstreet Boys", played GTA and watched some brutal TV-series. Then people are all like: "Yeah, yeah ... ofcourse. If you are already fucked up, those things can give you some bad ideas, but they do not necessarily affect me" or that "Games or movies do not have jack shit to do with that" But the truth is they do ... Lets take this overly ridicilous example: Abu Ghraib and the people there SUSPECTED of being terrorists. All the people there are not convicted prisoners, but still they are hold against their will and tortured. That must be wrong? Then lets us think about 24 and Jack Bauer. Everyone knows the plot, he has 24 hours and he has to stop (normally) the terrorists. So what is Jack going to do? Everything that NEEDS to be done. He is going to torture few people and kill few more to SAVE people. He is a hero ... After watching this serie, I almost felt like torturing few innocent is the right thing to do to catch the "terrorists" Ok, now lets take this second more stupid example: For example Saw, Hostel or Hellraiser. These movies contain lot of gore. Lets say you have not seen any gory movies and lets say that you are going to watch one of them. After watching the first you think: "Ouh fuck, that was really bad shit ... guts and stuff, just awful". Then lets say that you watch a second one after this and by miracle the next movie does not seems so special anymore. You get used to violence and seeing the shit in real life would not affect you so much. Ok, I am almost out of my lame examples. So I am going to state something ridicilous "How you play tells a lot about you". You know GTA? Or you know games that give you a choise between being a good guy or being a total bastard - example Mass Effect. I am going to say that a person who likes to play the bastard in these games is more likely to kill someone than the person playing the good guy. To sum things up: 1) Games and movies do affect on how you see things 2) They make you numb towards violence 3) Radio/Movies/Games can brainwash you 4) Listening to Backstreet Boys can make you kill people These videos or pictures may not be suitable for minors and they may cause you to kill people Abu Ghraib Gore More Gore Sorry, I could not find any "GOOD" gory stuff that will make you shit bricks
I need more gore!
They do affect you, but not as much as the media tells us.
You sound like a really impressionable fledgling serial killer.
OF course they affect you, but most people know how to apply their own personal morals to whatever they see. Which is why some of it shouldn't be seen by young kids, because they don't know what's normal quite yet.
Yes they can.
These videos or pictures may not be suitable for minors and they may cause you to kill people
 I remember after playing hl2 through the first time a had a dream I was walking through abandoned industrial places for hours. But I haven't wanted to do that in real life.
yes if you watch a violent movie and you gain pleasure from it due to your neural network, you wish to rexperience it by recreating the same violent act. people do cry in cinemas fyi
WHAT THE FUCK TO THE FIRST VIDEO. WHAT. THE. FUCK. For some reason I had a funny dream last night which involved me doing condemened 2 style beatings on someone I don't like and some random people I've never seen which was quite strange when I woke up.
"Can music affect people?" Stupid question.
that second video, 3 minutes to 3:18 = Angel Dust ... Yep, It'll do that to ya
Of course they can, and they do, daily. The problem is that you're only bringing up the negative side.
Stupid question
If you ask stupid questions, you get stupid answers? Though that is not the question I asked: "Does music affect people?" Music was there because it is often stated that "person listened to heavy metal and he also killed people" etc.
Various forms of media can push people to cause trouble like this, it's true. However I'm getting the idea you're trying to say that they'll have exactly this effect on everyone, which is stupid.
This really also depends on your age. I remember when I was younger I was effected more by videogames and scifi books. But as you get older you just want to do something constructive or it's boring and you put it off to the side in your mind. It still effects you but in more subtle ways.
I agree with OP. Although I do like to play games.
However I'm getting the idea you're trying to say that they'll have exactly this effect on everyone, which is stupid.
No, that is not what I am saying. But I am saying that if you watched a movie called The Woodsman and you were in a jury, you would give a person in this situation maybe a lesser sentence. Poor example number four, can not come up with other movie where you see from criminals point of view ... So I am not saying that playing some games and watching movies will make you lunatic ...

Any medium which is somewhat persuasive to the average person (games, movies, music and literature) can affect people's morals, yes, in my opinion. But it's not these things that will cause an acute change in how you perceive the world: rather the underlying ethical theories and philosophies that the writers subscribed to, or have criticized. These theories have been around for centuries, long before modern media, today's pop culture, and our current Western society in general. Like in 24, you see Jack Bauer torturing a few innocent people to, like you said, save the lives of many more. This is an example of relative, teleological morals. It might not be intrinsically sound (if you're going to argue that killing people is absolutely wrong), but the outcome is much better, than if you were not to harm these people under the pretense that any violence is inherently bad. I'm doing A level Ethics so I had to write that up just to remember a few words. Not trying to be condescending :v: My point is... these moral dispositions existed long, long before any video games, modern music or movies. People were simply swayed by the theories differently in the olden days. There's always going to be these "should I do bad thing X for good thing Y to occur" judgements being made, all these writers are doing is using this as inspiration for their writing, or challenging them.
I always choose the jackass response in Mass Effect just to piss of virtual people. Not the real ones.
4) Listening to Backstreet Boys can make you kill people
True probably.
"Can music affect people?" Stupid question.
I know that's sarcastic, but i can't work out if you mean it does or it doesn't
Of course it affects you. I think that music affects you the most though. Edit: Music creates a mood which could make you do things.
no people are empty, soulless machines without feelings and therefore cannot be affected by anything at all
If they had no effect they wouldn't be made, let alone sold. The effect is overwhelmingly positive to the point where we don't even notice it and take these things for granted. Therefore, we are quick to point out the negatives, which are much fewer than we perceive.
I need more gore!
Here you go!
