Feeling cold makes you slim, aussie scientists claim.
Feeling cold and working out produce brown fat with the same mechanism, an australian study claims.
White fat is fat tissue that stores energy, whereas brown fat is energy-burning fat. Brown fat has been subjected to much interest in the last few years. People with much brown fat remain slim.
The slimming effect stems from the fact that 50 grams of white fat contains energy worth of 300 kilocalories...but an equal amount of brown fat is able to burn 300 kilocalories a day.
In a whole new study Garvan's medical science institution's researchers figured out for the first time how muscles and white fat communicated with each other.
It was discovered that white fat begins its transformation into brown fat from trembling of muscles. As the muscles tremble, the presence two hormones - irisine and FGF24 - increase. This results in white fat transforming into brown fat. Exposing white fat to these hromones made it produce heat, which is a signature trait of brown fat.
The study was achieved with volunteers who were held in stages of colder and colder temperatures until their muscles began trembling.
Since irisine is known to increase in quantity during physical exercise, scientists compared the effect of trembling from cold and working out to the production of irisine.
Irisine is thought to be behind several health benefits brought by regular physical exercise. The results of an hour of cycling with a reasonable pulse produced as much irisine as ten to fifteen minutes of trembling from cold.
Since brown fat especially focuses on heat production, it has most likely developed to protect people from cold environments.
Therefore the trembling of muscles is a natural way which activates the production of brown fat.
Producing of brown fat during physical exercise is most likely a side effect since during movement human muscles move around in a similar way to that of trembling from cold, at least according to the scientists.
The study was released by Cell Metabolism.
EDIT: I found an English article here!
A new study suggests that shivering and bouts of moderate exercise are equally capable of stimulating the conversion of energy-storing 'white fat' into energy-burning 'brown fat'. Around 50 g of white fat stores more than 300 kilocalories of energy. The same amount of brown fat could burn up to 300 kilocalories a day.
Guess that explains why I feel like a nuclear reactor on legs during winter, I just can't feel cold these days.
Fuck; I'm in Florida.
Very interesting point is
The results of an hour of cycling with a reasonable pulse produced as much irisine as ten to fifteen minutes of trembling from cold.
Science = fuck yeah
This gives me much more incentive to continue running at least 30min-1 hour a day; thank you op

Considering I spend at least an hour in -10 Celsius every weekday for the whole winter, I have a powerful as hell workout routine :v:
The best part about all of that is that I can eat as much as I want and it doesn't matter; it all gets burned up in like 1-2 days.
Might want to start keeping the balcony door open, it's barely like 2 Celsius outside anyway.
brb throwing out all the food out of the fridge and crawling in
two birds with one stone
No Wonder I love the cold so much, time to go sleep in the snow
I've been working out wrong my entire life. I think I'll start going for early morning runs.
Also forget hot showers, folks.
Cold showers are clearly superior. They don't detach the natural oils keeping your skin from drying like hot water does, either, so it's good for your skin, your surface blood circulation and apparently weight control as well!
SCIENCE.
I always assumed it was heat that made you lose more weight.
Merge.

Technically, you're not wrong.

Even more incentive for me to move to Sweden :v:

Oh no man, come to Finland. I swear, it's much better in here.
[sp]not really, go to sweden it's a better choice for foreigners[/sp]

People that close up all the windows and set the thermostat high at the gym are the worst kind of people.

Hmm. I've always liked Finland as well. Atleast over Norway :v:
[sp]Thankfully I have dual-citizenship with U.S and Sweden (I just have to get my swedish passpost) but I have heard it's still hard to get any funding for school in sweden due to its abuse[/sp]

What if i cycle in the cold?!
This explains how I managed to stay at my grandparents' house in America for two weeks for Christmas and lose weight
Pretty sure the idea of freezing yourself to lose a few extra pounds is a shitty idea. Running in the cold isn't helpful either, because your muscles aren't shivering, since they've been warmed by the running. You'll just tense up and cause injury.
The only thing that this is probably useful for, is figuring out how those monks in tibet are able to melt the snow off of their bodies while they sit outside with only a tunic on.
What if i cycle in the cold?!
Can confirm I do this. Mixed results, I collapse from being too cold a lot though
But I never feel cold.
just find one of the those big walk-in supermarker freezers and lock yourself in then start doing deadlifts

Beg your pardon?
Just 50 grams of brown fat can consume 300 kilocalories a day. The more you get it, the more intense your heat production becomes. You don't need to freeze yourself to death, you're just exaggerating. I only need a hoodie, a t-shirt and some shortened jeans in negative temperatures since I already produce that much heat to keep myself warm regardless. But it doesn't mean it's foolproof. I carry a pair of gloves and keep my hoodie's sleeves rolled up so I can put them down in the offchance that I do feel cold after all.
The point is that this is great proof for controlled exposure vs. isolation against the environment. Putting on an extra coat to protect yourself from the cold works, but there's a more natural and I claim more effective method to solving the issue. Just fucking power through it, your body will adapt to it.
I am living proof of it, hell, I've fallen into a frozen canal, submerged completely then ran back home drenched wet for a kilometer while the jeans were literally freezing solid on me.
Took about 15 minutes for me to feel completely normal after I changed clothes and ate something warm. Didn't have amputations, no hypothermia, no nothing. Just trembled a lot and my lips were slightly blue That's how powerful brown fat is.

Sorry about that. I understand that brown fat is good, but I guess I forgot how cold I had to be to be shivering.
Props on surviving that river fall.
only one word can describe this. BRILLIANT
Wait must go check if I lost a few pounds I just walked a30 minute walk in a hour and a half in hail....
I eat when I feel cold though.
I eat when I feel cold though.
That's fine, considering the more brown fat you have, the more energy it will burn.
I wish there was a way to find out how much of the fat in one's body is brown/white.
Wait a second.
Brown fat is the superior fat.
Fat racism.
Fuck I'll go naked outside I think, it's fucking freezing outside
This is fascinating.
And right now I am getting over a foot of snow...
Hmm...

Don't go around rolling in snow, just when you're going on errands leave the top layer off and use something lighter. Like instead of a winter jacket get a pseudo-thick hoodie. Gradual exposure is much more effective in my experience than a cliff drop...though I've had this as far as I can remember, so I can't say for sure how much you can achieve starting later.
I'm always cold living in the garage... Could explain why I weigh 105lbs.
THIS EXPLAINS EVERYTHING
