Sony email leaks: Studio head wants Idris Elba as the next James Bond
For years, there’s been a lot of online chatter suggesting that Idris Elba, the suave British actor, should be the next James Bond—making him the first black 007.
Current superspy Daniel Craig has even voiced his desire to vacate the post, telling Rolling Stone in 2012, “I've been trying to get out of this from the very moment I got into it. But they won't let me go, and I've agreed to do a couple more, but let's see how this one does, because business is business and if the shit goes down, I've got a contract that somebody will happily wipe their ass with.” Craig is signed on for just one more Bond flick after Spectre.
When The Daily Beast spoke to Jamie Foxx earlier this year, coincidentally for the Sony flick The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he said he was a big fan of the idea of a martini-sipping Elba. “I ran into Idris and I said, ‘You know you’re the motherfuckin’ James Bond, right?’” Elba himself has admitted he’d love to play the role if offered.
Not sure how I feel about this.

this sounds awesome
but the james bond purists will probably complain about a black james bond due to the fact he never changes race in any of the books/movies/etc. (which i guess is a fair complaint)
That sounds pretty cool. But wouldn't he just be Luther with a licence to kill?
He played BBC's Luther, which I heard he was phenomenal in.

this show is on US Netflix if you guys haven't watched it yet.

it's great.
If Daniel Craig can be Bond, why not Idris Elba?
This'd be so righteous, like, holy shit. Pls happen.
Well 007 and James Bond are just codenames and false identities, how I've always seen it so swapping how he looks makes no difference to me, as long as he can play the role well.

I don't know that James Bond needs to be made suddenly black

I don't know that James Bond needs to be a white guy all the time.
Honestly, I'd kind of like to see how that would play out. It sounds interesting enough, and I'm not really against a black guy being Bond as long as he maintains the Bond character. Really, what should define Elba as Bond should be his presentation of Bond, and I don't doubt he'd do it well.
"Next thing you know James Bond will be played by a female Iranian/Mexican who was born in Sweden and raised in Nebraska. She won't even have a British accent. It's not just a code name! It has to be a white, anglo-saxon male with a very pronounced jawline!"
~Bond Purists.
Although, to be fair, this weird new idea of "we are more inclusive if the actor we use to portray a character is from a diverse background" is a touch annoying.

Not saying that Elba can't/shouldn't play Bond. Just pointing out that we have had this type of discussion over a lot of different classic characters recently.

I like to think that people want Elba to play Bond because he's a bloody good actor rather than solely for the sake of being inclusive.
And really, are there any reasons for Bond to keep being white other than because that's the way it's always been?
I know nothing at all about Idris Elba, but he looks like a boss. I'm sure he would make a good Bond, especially if Sony and most people here say so, I have faith.
What has he done that makes him a good choice though? Just curious.

I also agree here. I think we're seeing a very interesting thing with a lot of these movies. Annie comes to mind as well, and I don't think it's mere coincidence that both titles are produced by Sony. It's an interesting discussion, and one I'd love to consider longer, if only to get an idea for why there's this push. What factors are influencing it, and why are we seeing more racially diverse actors being cast in traditionally-white roles? Why are audiences demanding more diverse casts? How is that affecting the movie business, and how is it affecting the way audiences view Hollywood?
I definitely think there's a paper to be written here, or some decent investigative journalism.

He cancelled the apocalypse
If all the books/past has been James Bond being white, then can't they just create their own story of him not being James Bond, but still codename'd 007 because of some event?
Or just make another spy movie with him and not call it 007.

Well, they could, since the Bond movies past Skyfall haven't been based on the books. I don't know how well that'd go over with the Bond audience, though.
My question is if they're going to try and put it in the same universe as Daniel Craig's Bond, or create another one for him. I honestly doubt people would be very excited to see another series reboot.
They could always use this to validate the "Its multiple people in the same position." theory though. Just say that Daniel Craig's Bond was the original, and after his accomplishments, he basically became an entire classification unto himself, which only certain agents would reach. It allows them to keep all the stuff from Skyfall, but also not have to reboot the series again.

Most notably he's Heimdall in both Thor movies and will be in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Janek in Prometheus, Stacker Pentecost in Pacific Rim, Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and my personal favourite, Luther in the TV series.
He's perfect at acting a loner tough guy role. Oh, and of course he has this to deal with the ladies:

It's just skin color, I don't see how this really effects anything. He can still be James Bond. They are all different people and have had different ethnicities, heights, and hair colors. Being of darker pigmentation should be no different.
honestly after hearing "Idris Elba as James Bond", it's hard to think of another actor around right now that I'd want to portray the character more than him

They were considering a black james bond before Pierce Brosnan stopped too. This isn't 'suddenly'.
he gave the best movie doomsday speech since independence day hes got my vote

I just hope they don't blame a lackluster performance on race if his Bond movie doesn't do well.
Really couldn't care less if he is chosen, I just think a lot of people like myself are getting a little tired of the brand. I also don't think Spectre will do as well as they hope, especially with the budget it has.
The problem is that even though Daniel Craig was a decent Bond, a lot of other films with the same style have come out and oversaturated my desire to spend money to watch more of the same.
So. Much. Yes.
I always imagined him as the perfect Bond. MAKE IT HAPPEN.
