Quite interesting. It's funny to see the evolution of hardware, considering the size.
(and Univac? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multivac anyone?)
One mistake and the ship sinks
I think one will notice that the propeller is too big.
Still cool job.
It just shows how much modern technology has advanced over 40 years. A huge ass hall of computers to calculate that can now be done on something the size of a small calculator :eng101:
My dad prevented global thermonuclear war just by playing Tic Tac Toe with Joshua
If you don't get the reference watch WarGames
read the title as "ICBM"
that would have been cooler
Anyone at home still use IBM?
Anyone at home still use IBM?
I do
Not.
Low level code? Damn. I have issues with C++
Your dad is a legend.

and binary
For all you programming guys the programming languages he programmed in was Binary and low-level machine code. FORTRAN. The mother of all computer languages.
FORTRAN was made to ease the burden of developing with Assembler, and it's higher level than Assembler. It's neither binary nor machine code. Might just be the way you phrased it.. but that's how you made it sound.
Also, despite the rating, I'm not wrong about this..
Binary is not a language, machine code is called Assembly, and FORTRAN is a step above that.
One mistake and the ship sinks.
A tiny mistake in the propeller will not cause the ship to lose its buoyancy.

Yes it will, not buoyancy but if the propeller starts, the ship might tip forward or something. I don't know the details.
Yes it will, not buoyancy but if the propeller starts, the ship might tip forward or something. I don't know the details.
Uh, no it won't. If the propeller starts it doesn't because the engine does.
If the propeller starts spinning it wouldn't sink the ship because of the propeller blade pitch being too small or too big.
The only thing that'll happen is an ineffective propeller.
IBM (along with Google) is one of the coolest companies around.
If I were him I would feel like the biggest bad ass.
Stop boasting because your dad/mom did something.
You should've learned from your own "My mom works at the UN LOOK AT ME" thread.
Your father is 76 years old?
How old are you?
[editline]9th July 2011[/editline]
Why do you think you haven't been banned for being an alt of PlasmaMan?
[editline]9th July 2011[/editline]
What size are your areolae?
-snip-
So did the ship sink?
That's pretty interesting, actually. Without guys like this we wouldn't be sitting here on on computers now, now would we?
Your father conceived you when he was 51.
How do you feel about?

Don't be dumb, you're only getting yourself banned.
So did the ship sink?
What does the propeller design have to do with buoyancy?

He didn't built the computers, he programmed them.
I mean, kind of, in a logistical sense.
If it wasn't for guys like him we wouldn't have the ships to deliver the computers.

I was just wondering? I'm not entirely sure how asking questions is a bannable offense.
Backseat moderation is a bit humorous coming from an alt of a permabanned user.
Anyhow, how has your father being significantly older than norm affected your life?
One mistake and the ship sinks.
You mean one mistake and it gets detected during testing, and then your father loses his job.
I love old computers, just the way they operate is interesting to me. so many parts to do a simple task.

He hasn't affected my life drastically he looks like a 70 year old but has the mind of a 30 year old. My life is just like any other teenager.
I do
Not.
HURR HURR HURR
It's a cool first post but every single post after it has been pretty shit so far.
And I don't think he is boasting.
He hasn't affected my life drastically he looks like a 70 year old but has the mind of a 30 year old. My life is just like any other teenager. He works all the time in the UN, works out in the field in Burma/Myanmar. A military dictatorship.
ffff quick rate all posts dumb!
Does he have any interesting stories from working in Myanmar? Are they belligerent towards UN workers?
