• Razer saves gaming again! Unleashes the Nabu smart band
Tan briefed us on the product, he was careful to dance around the word tracker. "It's not a smartwatch," he said. "It's not a fitness band. It's what we're calling a 'smart band.'"

Nabu appears to be a good take on the growing wearables market, but the question still remains: Why is a gaming company building a so-called smart band? Never fear, Min says, "real-world gamification is something we're really focused on." Nabu is built on an open development platform, which Min hopes will allow developers to build augmented reality games. Band-to-band communication allows Nabu devices to detect proximity to other Nabu bands, and trade information (think 3DS Street Pass), which could be used to create augmented reality "tag" games, for instance. We can't say the idea sells us on the product, but it's something. Developers will be able to pick up Nabu by the end of Q1 2014 for $50, and the company says it should last 7-10 days on a single charge. Razer wouldn't tell us the final consumer price, but did mention it should fall under $100.
http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/razer-nabu-smart-band/
Thanks razer
"real-world gamification is something we're really focused on."
Thats the stupidest fucking thing I've heard in my goddamn life. Can razer go 15 minutes without making overpriced gimmick hardware?
But what the hell does it do?
But what the hell does it do?
Save gaming.
Save gaming.
But does gaming deserve to be saved?
But does gaming deserve to be saved?
No.
I thought for a second that said 'board' instead of 'band' and figured they'd either made an overpriced tablet or some sort of SMART board type thing. This isn't really any less disappointing though.
But what the hell does it do?
its another razer gimick. It's going to be hardware for apps that want you to do things in the real world. Think something like 4square, but in more of a game format.
Gamification This is so, so silly. I like the idea of wearable electronics, but this is beyond silly. Razer saves gaming? Razer makes my braincells scream. Just stick to the basic gaming peripherals, guys... I enjoy thinking out of the box, I commend that, good job. You've got an interesting idea but it's just not easily executable.
I read the whole article and I'm still not entirely certain exactly what purpose this thing serves.

You know what something like this could be used for that would be great? Rumble, like what you get with a controller.
i think its like, they're releasing peripherals for games that don't even exist yet. It's like if xbox started marketing the kinect 6 years before anything existed that would use it.

complete global [del]saturation[/del]gamification
You know what something like this could be used for that would be great? Rumble, like what you get with a controller.
As an alarm that would be pretty useful I'd imagine, some phones could probably fill the same function but with it right on your wrist I'd expect it'd be far more likely to wake you up if you fall asleep.
any reason you included a picture of bush
Running joke that he tended to make up words by saying real words ended with -ification I guess it's too obscure of a joke.
Isn't that what they did though? :v:
nah i mean like marketing the kinect before the 360 was even a thing.
any reason you included a picture of bush
It's Bushism
Running joke that he tended to make up words by saying real words ended with -ification I guess it's too obscure of a joke.
Gamification is a real word and it's a real concept used in wide range of products. There's complete courses dedicated to learn it all around the globe, including in top universities.
It's the Nexus Q of wearables
I still want a Nexus Q.
snip late
Stop putting 'smart' in the name of all new electronic devices, it's starting to get really dumb.
dumb band :v:
I guess Razer never heard of pedometer apps.
Seems i am one of the few who actually thinks this is pretty cool. It is loaded with pretty nifty features and it doesn't look like a hideous big watch and instead displays small notifications. It is also under 100$ so you can't go that wrong.
Oh wait, 50$? that's pretty nice price.
