http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-16279365
US authorities have asked the authors of two controversial bird flu studies to redact key details after a government advisory panel suggested the data could be used by terrorists.
is it really only ferrets?
The papers show how a bird flu variant can pass easily between ferrets.
but really... [release]
The lab-created version, the board warned, represented an "extremely serious global public health threat".
[/release] sensationalist if you ask me.
extremist ferrets, that's some new.
Does this mean that both Muslims AND ferrets have to comply to 'random searches' on airports?
Does this mean that both Muslims AND ferrets have to comply to 'random searches' on airports?
wait what. ferrets were just the animals used in the study. the great worry here is that information and procedures used in this study could be used to create some super-virus
07:15 < superkuh> It's incredibly stupid. The best way to decrease the pathogenicity of a virus is to pass it through multiple non-human hosts. And ferrets are horrible models of pathogenicity; as can be seen by the very high mortality they have with H1N1 novel origin from 2009. They are only useful models for virulence because they share the sialic acid sugars on the their upper respiratory epithelial cells as humans. 07:16 < superkuh> And that's not even acknowledging that the H1N1 1918 strain sequences are already published and widely distributed; a strain that *does* have high virulence and is highly pathogenic in humans. 07:16 < superkuh> s/the their/their/ 07:17 < superkuh> This entire media storm is being manufactured for it's value in justifying censorship. 07:18 < superkuh> It's not like the information isn't out already anyway. The NSABB only got involved after peer review. 07:18 < kanzure> ferrets did seem like an odd choice to me, but i'm not familiar with them in research 07:19 < superkuh> Like I said, they are the standard model for human influenza virulence because their sialic acid sugars, where the neuraminidase proteins on the influenza bind to enter the cell, are very close to human. 07:20 < kanzure> so anyway, this study could be anything- theoretical genetic changes that would cause greater virulence, or even actual tests 07:20 < kanzure> i sorta doubt actual tests of viruses or any sort of directed-evolution-to-see-which-strain-comes-out-on-top 07:21 < kanzure> probably just a theoretical study.. "hurr you can clearly change the incubation period with these four snps" 07:22 < superkuh> I doubt they did even cell culture based tests for human pathogenicity; and if they did it wouldn't be reliable. All statements about the danger of the virus cannot be justified from ferret models.
except that worry is fucking stupid because if you're an infectious agent specialist you'd know how to transmit and have the virus mutate You'd just need to get a hold of the H5N1 strains [editline]22nd January 2012[/editline] just more censorship bullshit
Edoxia I love how you act like you're a fucking scientist on everything. You did it in literally like EVERY thread you post in.
i have three ferrets
Don't trust them. They will destroy your American way of life.

The only reason they censored this is because of the sensationalist shitstorm. People thought they creating were some kind of biological superweapon but the entire study is meant to save countless human lives.
california is safe, state wide ferret ban.

What if it refers to that new almost always lethal laboratory-designed strain :tinfoil:

I hope they can find a vaccine soon so they can destroy the virus they created, if that got out we are fucked.
Covering up the zombie infestation.
The idea isn't that theyre going to use ferrets, the idea is that they successfully transferred it from avians to mammals. If it can go into a ferret it can go into another much more common mammal such as a rat or squirrel and then into a very common mammal called a human.
california is safe, state wide ferret ban.
Really? How come? I don't know much about ferrets, and I'm curious why they'd be banned.
Really? How come? I don't know much about ferrets, and I'm curious why they'd be banned.
I used to own a ferret, they can flatten themselves through extremely small crevices and can practically get anywhere so I guess they can be viewed as pests though they are used in other areas to hunt certain animals that burrow (not sure which one). For example I would often open up random drawers to find it curled up in them. I would be in the bathroom taking a leak and it would come in under the door. It somehow found a way into the area that stores pots and pans under the oven. It got into the walls and would scratch around all day in there and then come out in the night and steal food. It also has a tendency to dig so it scratched up some areas of the floor. And it craps everywhere. I still loved the damn thing, but it eventually slipped out the door one day when we were moving and once those things are gone you can't find them.
Covering up the zombie infestation.
yeah I was thinking "this is some SCP shit right here" when I read "The lab-created version, the board warned, represented an "extremely serious global public health threat".
