Australian police are useless - I need an idea for a home made trap

I need help setting a fucking trap. I swear somebody is trying to kill me. If you want to rob a house you don't just sit in a fucking chair under it and watch the tenant walk into their room.
Halp facepunch. Need a trap that will scare the fuck out of this person if they decide to come back
what happened:
I live in Queensland, Australia. We live in this double story "queenslander" home, which has the typical house up stairs, and underneath it is a garage, another room - usually for games or storage, and laundry area. My room is the room down stairs one.
The creepiest shit happened on Wednesday night, I was coming down stairs at about 1am from having a shower upstairs. I was in nothing but a towel. I walked over to my room, picked up the key and started unlocking my room. I don't bother turning on the light because once I'm in my room I'd have to come back out later to turn it off anyway so it's kinda useless. Anyway as I open my door and turn on the light, you know how dogs have those crazy eyes that shine in the light, well I caught a glimpse of my dad's racing car's chair (that was out of the car sitting on the ground, he's doing work to the car atm) and I swear I saw silhouette of a fucking person just sitting in it with their eyes reflecting the light back to me. I didn't look long enough to decipher what I was seeing, I shot inside my room and closed the door and locked it etc. My heart was thumping out of my chest. I freaked out but put it down to my eyes were fucking up and I didn't see anything. My ears were pretty alert and I didn't hear any noise so I put it down to me being retarded.
^ TLDR I saw a person sitting in a chair under the house when I was walking to my room
So that was all good, I didn't think anything else of it. The next night I heard the door to the downstairs area open. I put it down to the fact that I hadn't shut it properly and the wind probably opened it. I left the room about 20 mins after I heard this to go upstairs for some food. I told dad about it and he was saying that there were wet footprints going up our stairs when he went to leave for work at 5am. and that if anything happens just bang on the roof and he'll come down straight away. So that freaked me out, because usually when you think "im just being stupid" you are overreacting. knowing that i wasnt was like holy. fuck.
^ TLDR Hear the door open the next night. Dad noticed footprints going up front stairs when he was leaving for work (it had been raining)
Tonight is where shit started going down. I was chilling in my room at about 11pm browsing the net, when I heard a bang on the back fence like somebody was trying to jump it. That combined with all the other things I'd seen over the last few days made me shit my pants. I was on full alert, I muted the TV, grabbed this curtain rod thing and sat there while my ears went radar mode and was listening to every sound outside my house. Then the fucking door to downstairs opens and I know that I shut it properly this time. I freaked the fuck out, jumped on my lounge and started banging the roof (because my family is directly above me). and go (like a pussy) "SOMEBODY'S DOWN HERE. DAD!"
I hear my dad running to get downstairs and I also hear running outside. The person tried to take the side gate and there was this loud as fuck CRASH. What they didnt know is that my dog has a habit of climbing the gate and getting out of our yard so we had this extra piece of fence sitting on top of the gate. when the person opened the gate it came crashing down. I tried to call the local police station... no answer.. WHAT THE FUCK. So I called 000 and went through all that shit, the police (um.. a single police woman actually) only JUST got here about 15 minutes ago (2 and a half hours later), she shined a torch around our yard, said "that's a hard one. well if you have any problems just let us know, the crash probably scared em off aye (forced laughter) alright goodnight" my dad and i checked if anything was stolen and there isnt so i dont know what this person wants..
^ TLDR: fears confirmed to be real after person flees house tonight when i startle them by banging on the roof.
what the fuck do I do and what are some traps that will be really fucking loud and painful if this person comes back
inb4 dont be a pussy and fight them

Movement sensors, cameras. Have lights and camera recording go on when movement is detected.
Your yard being illuminated should scare them off easily.
You can't kill someone for coming into your house in Australia. Especially not with a gun. You're supposed to have a gun in a safe, with teh ammo seperate. If you kill someone with it, you can't even claim self defence.
So..
Carry a knife, and/or a fake gun, chill with some friends, if the guy comes back tell him to fuck off or you'll kill him.
Somebody is aiming to rob your house. Alert neighbours, put alarms on your doors and window, keep a blunt weapon close.
Get a gun!
Wait what? you cant shoot someone breaking into your house???
Just buy a big dog.

We have a big dog. He's scared of his own shadow.

What if the tenant has a gun?:colbert:
i think you mean Queensland Police are useless. what do you expect them to do when they're clearly understaffed (local police station didn't pick up phone) and probably have other, more pressing jobs to take care of.
ive had to call the Vic Po po a few times and they've been very good.
[editline]6th November 2010[/editline]
by the way, if you injure them with your trap, you'll be charged with assualt, and probably sued by that other person.
we don't have the same laws as you constantly hear about in the us.

how can they charge me with assault, they're the ones invading my home? self defense?
Lock. The. Doors.
And invest in a cricket bat for your self defense.
If you have the time, money and patience go for a shotgun.
how can they charge me with assault, they're the ones invading my home? self defense?
Unless they attacked you it's not self defense. This isn't Texas.

in australia, if you use force, you can only use equal force to them. for instance, if they're not carrying any weapons, and you stab them, you've got no legal defense.
you'll be tried, and almost surely convicted of assault and other charges.
This place sounds fucked up... So what do you do when people break into your house? You offer them tea and ask them if they need help? And then when they leave you call the police? That sounds like some bull shit to me.

wtf is wrong with the world. if you are doing this kind of shit to somebody else you deserve to be shot :(

Wow you are from Texas and you don't even understand the law? If someone comes INTO YOUR HOUSE, you are not expected to flee from your own residence, meaning you are allowed to attack them to defend yourself. Even if they don't directly attack you.
All states are different.
But It is self defense if someone breaks into your home and you attack them.

Pretty sure that's what I implied.

it's better than being shot or shooting them.
the major difference between the us and australia is most households don't own a gun. it's something like less than 5% do.
also, trespassing is criminal in australia, unlike the US.
I make good tea by the way. Feel free to come inside.
Actually don't bother with a shotgun if you cannot even remember to lock the door to your own house at night.

Yep. This reading stuff is hard, I'm going to go practice.

The door into the downstairs area (it's a shed/laundry/garage area. it's hard to explain) doesn't get locked because it cant be unlocked once you do lock it. We are only renting this house, we put in an application for it to be fixed but the real estate hasn't done anything about it. My room however does lock.
When you hear them come in, wait for them to tiptoe into your room, slam the door, throw the body out the window.
Equal amount of weaponry, can't be charged with assault (because you didn't use weapons to assault them), and they end up badly stunned for a few seconds from the fall. Not to mention maybe a glass shard or two in the back if you left the window closed.
Why slam the door?
Because people are stupid enough to pause for a few seconds to register any sound they hear, even if they're supposed to be moving if they hear any sort of sound. :downs:

Ah okay little details like this are good to know.
You need to get on the landlords ass and get them to fix that shit straight away, raise hell with them, if they know what's good for them they'd get it DONE pronto.
Spend the next nights waiting for him and whack the shit outta him when he tries to get in.
Try hitting his head so he gets mentally retarded or something, that will show him.

Barricade the door, keep the lights on, call some friends over.
