(AP) - A federal judge seems to think Native Americans offended by the Washington Redskins team name are properly being sued by the NFL franchise. Judge Gerald Bruce Lee suggested during a hearing Friday that it would be unprecedented to dismiss the team's lawsuit against five Native Americans who complained about the name to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

A lawyer for the Native Americans, Jesse Witten, argued that his clients should be left out of the dispute and that the lawsuit against them should be dismissed. But team attorney Robert Raskopf said Amanda Blackhorse and the other defendants belong in court because they're the ones who filed the petition.

Judge Gerald Bruce Lee
what a name
I saw a Muskogee Nation plate that read "RDSKIN" earlier today. Guess someone doesn't think it's offensive.

if people actually knew the history of the name they wouldn't be so "offended" anymore if this kind of stuff keeps up we're looking at a very generic future [editline]d[/editline] while we're at it let's get rid of the braves, the indians, and the blackhawks too
Most Native Americans that people come across seem to not care, then again, my white Liberal friends are offended on behalf of the Natives. Funny how that works.
Lol so how are you all going to say "it's just white people getting offended" now? There are actually real Native Americans who don't like a racial slur as a team name, so what are you going to say to them?

Then they'd tell me to check my cis-white-male-privilege, I'd scream about how they're triggering my PTSD because I'm transraccoon and how much a fence I have taken by them assuming I am human-kin just because I was biologically born a human and not a raccoon. Then we'd probably come full circle after another round of shit flinging. That's about how this works yes?

If a Native America said to you "I'm offended by the racist team name" you'd say all of that to them? The way your brain works sounds fascinating.

Tell them that a lot of natives see it more neutral, and look past it. Anyway, if the blacks can get past the N-word to the point of calling each other it, then Natives can do similar.
i'd say that they are making fuss over nothing and that 90% of their people agrees if they took three seconds to research the word i don't think they'd be so offended anymore

"Redskin" is a term for Native Americans. The term is defined in current dictionaries of American English as "usually offensive",[1] "disparaging",[2][3] "insulting",[4] and "taboo".[5] Because the term is generally considered a slur by the Native American population, it has almost disappeared from common usage since the 1960s, except as a name for sports teams, although the number of teams using the name has also been in steady decline.
first result i got on google for 'redskin'
using wikipedia as your source nice
there's no dodging the fact that the continued use is discriminatory. [editline]3rd November 2014[/editline]
using wikipedia as your source nice
it's better than the sources you've provided :~)
Not many people get offended by the N-word anymore. Doesn't mean it should be the name of a football team
ive literally never heard it used that way in my life word usage changes
Not many people get offended by the N-word anymore. Doesn't mean it should be the name of a football team
i don't think it's the same at all
thanks for the personal anecdote im sure it'll be cherished
At least it's not this shit: [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/52/Cleveland_Indians_logo.svg/791px-Cleveland_Indians_logo.svg.png[/t]
The origin of the word "redskin" is debated. Some scholars say that it was coined by early settlers in reference to the skin tone of Native Americans, while others say it referred to the color of the body paint used by certain tribes. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, European Americans wanted a term which all could use to refer to all Native Americans in negotiating treaties that involved different tribes. They adopted the color metaphors used at that time for race pointing to continental origins: white men, black men and red men. The first use of red skin was among a small group in the region first settled by the French, who used the term peaux rouges,[14] their translation of the native word the local tribes used for themselves.
It'd be like a football team using the name "Blackskins" despite the fact that no one on the team is an african american or has dark skin. It's misrepresentational. even stuff like this:
The "positive" stereotypes allow fans and supporters to honestly state that they are honoring Native Americans, but this is "...forcing your idea of what it is to honour those people onto them and that, fundamentally, is disrespectful."
It's misrepresentational. It's unlikely that an entire race of people wish to be represented by a football team. source (Dr. Darren Reid of Coventry University Lecture): http://www.darrenreidhistory.co.uk/why-the-redskins-is-a-racist-name/
are you from the backwoods of alabama? honestly, have you ever heard it used? its derogatory use is disappearing from what i've seen and racist people made it that way, it was never supposed to be. native americans used it themselves back in the colonial days as a way of maintaining their identity
How is using it as a team name "discriminatory"?
look to zyler's post
Can someone provide a real, documented, example of someone using the word "redskin" in a purposefully derogatory way within the last year?
i just hope they don't actually change it to "Washington Warriors" if you're going to get rid of Redskins then at least keep the native american aspect
thanks for the personal anecdote im sure it'll be cherished
i forgot im on this place called the internet where life experience is completely null and void

You don't call a football team "The African American Football Team" or "The Black Guy Team" when it has no African Americans in it. It's factually inaccurate. To say the use of the term is beneficial to Native Americans is irrelevant because you're assuming that all Native Americans want to be compared to a football team.

Why are those not "misrepresentational"? You can make that argument for all of the teams.

They are in no way even claiming to represent those people, instead, they are trying to emulate some positive aspect of them. In the case of "Redskins" they are attempting to emulate the bravery often shown by Native American warriors.
