Apparently even insects are jumping on the solar power bandwagon. A recent breakthrough discovery conducted at Tel-Aviv University has found that the Oriental hornet can turn light into electricity.
The study, reported on in the journal Naturwissenschaften, began when scientists observed that unlike other wasps, the Oriental hornet is most active in the middle of the day. Further investigation revealed that UVB radiation affects the hornet's activity level.
It turns out that an Oriental hornet's shell can trap sunlight, while the pigment xanthopterin converts it to energy. This explains why the hornet is most active mid-day.
Now, this bug isn't exactly the most energy efficient form of solar power. According to National Geographic, the hornet's cells are about .3% efficient at generating electricity. The majority of his energy comes from food. Still, the discovery is fascinating, as study leader Marian Plotkin explains, "We've seen solar harvesting in plants and bacteria, but never before in animals."
only partial energy, but still getting energy from the sun and it's a fucking hornet
fuck you god
I'm so jealous. :(
That's one bright hornet, it knows to be out mid day to get the most energy.
Now they have more time to sting us. Fuck.
whats a hornet? :ohdear:
Reminds me of this little guy:

Thats one green-hornet!
Sweet, do they know if it's using a process similar to the light reactions of photosynthesis or is it something new?
Fuck.
Well that was fun guys, but I get off here.
:suicide:
oh god they're evolving
whats a hornet? :ohdear:
One very BADASS bee.

Difference is, is that that is symbiosis, while this is the same organism.

Badass isn't the word I'd use.
I think - terrifying maybe. Frightening perhaps. Awful is a word that also describes it well. Ghastly might do the job. Grim is something it is for a fact. Hideous - well, not really, but it's hideously scary anyway. Horrible without a doubt. Startling and heart-attack educing. Treacherous, shocking, horrid, creepy and scary also work.
They are like angry terrorists with wings on steroids.
[editline]*[/editline]
I bet they'd suicide bomb me if they had the technology.
I guess thats that.
We should harvest hornets for energy points.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is ... a good discovery. Interesting anyway.
Difference is, is that that is symbiosis, while this is the same organism.
If you actually read the link then you'd know this is beyond symbiosis. It actually modified it's own DNA so it produces everything itself.
I for one welcome our hornet overlords.

I would never let a bug with a stinger crawl on me.
Smash it with a claw hammer.
It uses sunlight like a plant
It flies like an animal
Holy shit,
It's a plantimal
Difference is, is that that is symbiosis, while this is the same organism.
kleptoplastidy isn't really symbiotic if it kills the algae.
Superman?!
Fuck you evolution!
:kratos:
Welp, let's [del]abuse[/del] "study" them.

Breeding.
Lets breed them until they are 100% solar powered.

Imagine, a solar powered super army. No one can stop Best Korea now.
G'night Jacob.
Good night, love. Talk to you in the morning, yes?
So first the temite, then that weird algea fish thing, now this?
When are we going to make organic parts to power my blender?
This gets me wondering what our wildlife will be(e) look like in a few hundred years.
