I went to camp this weekend with my family and it was "Christmas in July" weekend there.
A man in a Santa Claus suit goes on the stage in the ballpark and there are garbage bags of presents for the kids that the parents bought for them, and with a population of about 500-700 people, the idea of calling the kids up one by one was tedious.
As I was waiting for my gift, and a kid looked about 11-12 came up to me, no greeting at all, just "HimynameisbrendonIlikecookiesdoyoulikecookies?".
It was really awkward even before he came along, but I tried to make "conversation".
The kid likes Runescape and continues to chat about it until I am called up to get the gift from Santa. After I unwrap it, it's a documentary on one of my favorite bands, "The Doors".
The kid is like "wtf is that". I told him that the band's songs were a work of art. Of course he had never heard of them, I didn't expect him to, but I named off a few.
"What about AC/DC?"
"Never heard of them"
"Jethro Tull?"
"Nope"
"OK, OK...The Beatles?"
"Never heard."
"WHAT?! Only the greatest band of all time!"
"Nickelback?"
I wanted to punch this kid.
Did I not use popular enough bands? He claimed that I have terrible taste in music after I show him "Riders Of The Storm" by The Doors. I eventually just gave up.
What should I have shown him/done?
Oh no someone with a different lifestyle than me, fuck him.
He is young, he probably doesn't care that much about music yet. And you shouldn't care what other people listen..

Did you mention Led Zeppelin? Pink Floyd? The Doors?

I understand that he's 12 (I think) and I was into Runescape at the time, but I was also REALLY into The Doors along with damn near everyone I knew.
I guess it just depends on where/how you grow up.

Oh yeah, I said Zepplin. not the others though, I was in a hurry to go watch my DVD, plus I had to cook supper.

Also, you shouldn't have done anything. Why would you want to change some random kid's mind? He's been brainwashed into the popular music scene most likely so he won't care about anyone he hasn't heard about from his friends. Just let him like what he wants to like.
You also sound like you're riding a bandwagon though. Most of the bands you mentioned are just as overrated.

the thing that made me a bit angry/confused/wondering is that AFTER I showed him a Doors song or two (I believe it was "Riders On The Storm" and "Break On Through".) he said that they completely suck.

Riders on the storm is awesome though.
I'm thinking the fact everyone around you liked this sound has brainwashed you into thinking the bands are factually good. So when you met someone who didn't, you dismissed him as ignorant.

Funnily enough, other people have opinions too, some people like Nickelback, some people like The Offspring, and you like The Doors. Everyone will have a different opinion, if he doesn't like what you like, it's simply his opinion, so you shouldn't get angry at him saying your favourite music is rubbish. He's 12, give him a break, he's not even a teenager yet, he doesn't have to fully understand music yet.
