And it’s no wonder the Emperor appears haggard. Members of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania believe Darth Vader’s boss would have to shell out a whopping $8,100,000,000,000,000. Or roughly 13,000 times the world's gross domestic product (GDP) to build one today. The economics team said they believe the Death Star to be made of steel and, based on reports it is 140km in diameter, came to the figure based on today’s steel prices. “Scaling up to the Death Star, this is about 1.08x1015 tonnes of steel,” the student’s blog Centives said. “Which seems like a colossal mass but we've calculated that from the iron in the earth, you could make just over 2 billion Death Stars.” But Luke and those “loveable” Ewoks can rest assured knowing that it would take 833,315 years to produce enough steel to begin work on another Death Star, Centives wrote. Good thing robots work for free and will harvest the shit
Somebody has a family member who worked for Bethlehem Steel...
But doesn't Star Wars take place in a galaxy far far away? Their planets might have much more steel and better technology.

pudu!
2 billion Death Stars from Earth's iron? Sounds like a fair trade to me.
We're still calculating things about the Deathstar? Really?
“Which seems like a colossal mass but we've calculated that from the iron in the earth, you could make just over 2 billion Death Stars.”
Holy shit
We're still calculating things about the Deathstar? Really?
why not?
We're still calculating things about the Deathstar? Really?
They probably started calculating it when the film first came out.
or they mine asteriods
Do they have enough factories? :v:
The Deathstar isn't made out of steel itself, it is made out of a starwars fictional alloy... Besides, in Star Wars the Emperor has a Galactic Empire, with slaves, with robots, etc... >_>
man economics students must be bored nerds
or they mine asteriods
Indeed, would probably be far easier to get the required amount, as they tend to be more rich in metals. Still absurdly complex and resource-demanding by today's standards, but if we get to the point where building a Death Star is at all feasible, the limitation becomes not technology, but getting the required materials in a timely manner. Wasn't there one asteroid that had more gold on it than has ever been mined in human history?

I dunno about you guys, but I like projects like this. It gives the fictional universe this all came from a more lore-friendly feel to it, and you find yourself appreciating the implications of character's actions more because of it.
And the deathstar can also destroy entire planets. Go calculate how much energy is needed to do that.
We're still calculating things about the Deathstar? Really?
Should start calculating things about Star Destroyers IMO
We'll better to start to build more nuclear reactors then :v:

Mando'a'Beskar is still 10x more cool though.
And Darth Vader blew up a whole damn planet full of precious steel, instead of just scorching the surface and killing all life. Atleast the method I mentioned meant that the planet could be mined after it's cooled down again.
Well what are we waiting for? Lets build a few and shoot at some planets while drunk.
Rednecks in space, that wont end well.
Wait, all the iron on Earth being enough to make 2 billion Death Stars? I thought you'd need to tear apart an asteroid to get enough metal for ONE Death Star! Personally I think it'd be cheaper to hollow out an asteroid and fit it with mobility stuff; it'd be much cheaper than a great big metal sphere. Also, I wonder if the Empire would've "recycled" Alderaan after they blew it up, like how CEC in Dead Space goes around breaking up planets and mining them for all their mineral worth...

And to think Some goddamn Jedis had blown it up....how careless.
wasn't there a thread a couple years ago where people calculated how much a death star would cost?
But are they practical and cost-efficient? I somehow doubt it. Also, a giant space rock bringing doom upon countless worlds can be scary too if you think about it.

I've read to much about the Empire's other superweapons but I haven't came across anything like that
