Underwater explorers in Madagascar say they have discovered treasure belonging to the notorious 17th-Century Scottish pirate William Kidd.
A 50kg (7st 9lb) silver bar was brought to shore on Thursday the island of Sainte Marie, from what is thought to be the wreck of the Adventure Galley.
The bar was presented to Madagascar's president at a special ceremony.
US explorer Barry Clifford says he believes there are many more such bars still in the wreck.
Capt Kidd was first appointed by the British authorities to tackle piracy but later became a ruthless criminal and was executed in 1701.
That's a big block of silver.
I wonder how much of it is left down there, and it seems likely there might be more than silver aboard.
That series of pictures reminds me of Star Wars: Battlefront.

Do the finders get to keep it or is it considered stolen goods?
This is one of those cases where I hope these blocks of silver goto a museum, and stay there.
That's awesome. I love all the mystery and undiscovered things from that period.
A famous pirate, captured and executed, left behind a one-piece treasure.
I think I've already heard this one.

some probably will, but it's bullion, it's still money. a lot of money. the only historically interesting part of them is the stamp anyway.

article says there's most probably more down there.
Whose silver was it before? If it was taken from a British company, wouldn't it be property of the crown now? I'd like to follow the inevitable salvage rights case.
e: Article says Bolivia, so I guess not.
The bar is worth more than $26,000 USD.

They just get it and put a rock in its place where they wrote "nothing personnel kidd".
Damn thats really cool. Theres a place called Oak Island off the coast nova scotia that has a huge pit dubbed the "money pit" it is rumoured that some of Kidds treasure resides somewhere deep inside the pit.

Every time a treasure is found some country lays claim to it and those who found it either get nothing or just a tiny amount
