Hilton Head, S.C. | A 38-year-old jogger from Georgia is dead after a single-engine plane making an emergency landing hit him as he ran on a South Carolina beach listening to his iPod.
The coroner said Tuesday that Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., apparently did not hear the troubled plane that struck him from behind on Hilton Head Island The plane had lost its propeller and the pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield.
Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen says he plans to conduct an autopsy. He says Jones was married and had two children.
Hilton Head fire and rescue spokeswoman Joheida Fister says the identities of the pilot and a passenger on the Experimental Lancair IV-P plane were not released. They were not injured.
The plane started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet and tried originally to make it to Hilton Head Airport, Fister said. The oil on the windshield blocked the pilot's vision and he told authorities the propeller came off the plane. When he tried to land on the beach near the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa, the plane hit the beachgoer and came to rest a little farther down the beach, she said.
“I would have to say it's pretty unusual,” Fister said.
FAA records show the aircraft was registered to Edward I. Smith of Chesapeake, Va., with a certificate issued in 2004. Nobody answered early Tuesday at a phone number listed for Smith and a message was not immediately answered.
The plane left Orlando at 4:45 p.m. and was headed for Virginia, Fister said. The four-seater plane has a turbine engine, can be built from a kit and can fly up to 370 mph, according to the Lancair Web site. The IV-P model has a pressurized cabin.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating, Fister said.
Well that's some shit luck.
There is one unlucky soul.
Disgruntled family members will file a lawsuit against Apple for him not being able to listen to the plane coming towards him in 3... 2... 1...
That's just plane wrong.
what song was he listening to
The chances of that happening is like standing in the middle of a football field and catching a fly in a split second. Those are some pretty low odds, but this guy sure has(d) bad luck.
I thought I was unlucky, but DAMN, look at this shit
Man... talk about bad luck. No one really is at fault here, it's purely shit luck.
Life's a beach.
And this is why you shouldn't have your music up so loud.
Oh, the puns.

Fix'd :q:
This shit is pretty fly, man.
Why the bout of puns in this sub-forum?
In coming weeks: Australia bans iPods to increase air traffic safety
There was a case like this some time ago, in England I think. Some kid was killed by a crashing helicopter because he didn't hear it coming.
Catch 22 real-life reference.
wow
what song was he listening to
High Speed Dirt.
The pilot was listening to Danger Zone.

Yeah I remember that. Guy went out to get the mail and a helicopter crashed on him.
When I listen to my Zune (iPod ripoff) I hear everything around me and my music unless it's cranked to the max. So obviously this guy did the same thing for some dumb ass reason. Why do people blare their headphones? Do they really want to be deaf? Or in this case, dead?
Well, that's the best example of Sod's Law I've ever seen.
The Pilot's an ass. He should have slipped to see whether the beach is free, and when there are some people, he should've tried landing on the water or something.
He acted unresponsibly.
(I'm a pilot, I know what I'm talking about, really)
What an extremely mis-fortuned man, I hope the pilot at least made it out fine and he doesn't get sued over something he had no control of.
Unless of course he INTENTIONALLY aimed it as he was crashing, thats a far better shot than I can make, but a devious one for sure. He deserves bad things in his future. ( like a plane hitting HIM )
So whats printed on his death certificate?
"Death by plane to the head"
