Hey guys! Its been a while since I last posted here, but I’ve been working on something for the past two years, and I can finally share some more with the public. Since i got my roots in the TF2 scene, I figured you guys deserved a bit of an early look at the site.
anyhow, I’ve been working on a project called weav, a new site for streaming: http://www.weav.tv/
we’re on the cusp of going public; we can finally talk about it and we’re accepting sign ups (see last page of link) too!
EDIT: You can help them here telling them what you are most looking forward to.
It's a alternative to twitch, seems cool, well designed. Will sign up and try it at a future date.
P.S since the address bar is annoying and OP didn't put it in

I like the idea of a controlled chat - twitch allows far too much freedom and spam, it's like watching everybody watching a TV show at once, and all of them are 9 year old's trying to make jokes.
I'm so glad it's finally going public. Comedian's my best friend so I've known about this and been following this for a while. His aim is literally to take on twitch - and surpass it. Trust me when I say you won't find a more dedicated and enthusiastic person anywhere.
Waitin for the email. Looks cool.
Looks interesting, I'll check it out!
Woo, this is a lot of enthusiasm in the very start.
Will check it out asap.
Maybe i'm missing something here but what is going to make this better than twitch? Everything is explained in vague terms. It doesn't explain for example how you can be "Discovered"

Hey ExEcuteFox, Two of the more unique points are primarily that we're going to have live DVR capabilities, so you can rewind live, all that kinda stuff. The "discover" page you should see as a type of netflix suggestions style thing for similar streams to the ones you like (enabling you to "discover" more appropriate content) as well. We will also have a system that will rank streams not just by amount of viewers, but also on other metrics.
It's important for streamers to have more possibilities to get the viewers that might be interested in their content, as well as viewers to find more content in the style they love. Its like a dating service for viewers and streamers, we want to create happy couples.

I love the way you think about it man, welcome to FP, too. I'll probably get me and a friend to try out the site. If you ever need any assistance with anything you can just drop a PM
I've been thinking of starting a stream soonish, I'll definitely give this a try once it becomes available.
Edit: Just how friendly will this service be to low-upload users like myself, though?

Thanks! facepunch is pretty interesting, though I think i'm going to be lurking a bit more first. Hope you'll enjoy it when it goes live

Its going to be pretty identical, there is no way to have a low bitrate stream look better really :( I can however suggest optimisations or even being more selective in the types of games you stream. The way streaming works (I'm oversimplifying massively here, but the general gist applies) is that it requires a lot more data the more the screen changes. An FPS where you constantly move around will require a much higher upload speed than a card game such as heartstone.
I'm not a streamer, but best of luck. Twitch needs more competition.

What about H.265 or VP9? There may not be much software support for it (let alone hardware encoding), but someone's gotta start.

thanks for the kind words of support. Regarding your question, I wanted to be sure so I sent it off to the devs, so I'll need to get back to you on that. However my knowledge of H.264 vs H.265 is that 264 is a bigger file, but requires a lot less time to encode.
A quote from this site: http://www.extremetech.com/computing/162027-h-265-benchmarked-does-the-next-generation-video-codec-live-up-to-expectations/2
"our Ivy Bridge 3770K encoded the same file in H.264 in 129 seconds as compared to 247 seconds for H.265. Keep in mind, however, that this is very, very early software."
I assume that's why its not being used at the moment, you after all, have to be able to transcode live while you're playing. No use to anyone if you take 1.2x longer, getting a nice and long delay after a few minutes of streaming. Anyhow, will get back to you once I hear back from the devs
Since you already need a massively powerful CPU to software encode (instead of doing it on the GPU) H.264 in real time (as far as I know anyway), streaming H.265 is probably gonna be out of the question for a while, but it would be nice if you're ready by the time streamers could do it when given streaming site support.

Just heard back from the devs, we can support H.265 and V9 (and V8) fairly quickly if needed, the required libraries and tools all exist and can be plugged into our system without much modifying.
Seems neat, plugged in my email and I'll try it out once I get my email
well, the site is online and working, feel free (if you want to) to go there, make an account and try streaming. We're very happy to get any feedback whatsoever regarding the site (shoutout to hippo for giving some nice constructive criticism!)

First thing I'll say, nice alternative but the player page is really, fucking horrendously badly laid out.
Why is the chat section taking half the page, why is the player only 1/4 of the page, why are they forcing all this crap to be displayed on the page at once?
The player should take most of the screen space, 3/4 of it followed by a collapsible chat taking the other 1/4. Why do we instead have this obnoxious huge thing dwarfing the rest of the page?
I'm sorry but this site's design is horrible and won't be pulling me in, Twitch and Hitbox have better layouts for streaming.
If they want to bring people in, they need to change the viewer page completely because this is fucking horrible to use.

Oh and it gets worse on 4:3 monitors. Whoever designed this site doesn't know what Streaming platforms should focus on, because it's not the fucking chat box for one. Oh and it screams pre-made template, I wouldn't entirely put it past that this whole site is running off something that someone else already made and they've just tacked on a name to it.
Overall the site's design feels half arsed, neat idea but terrible execution.
Keep in mind it's still in alpha. I suggest to report such problems via email (lazar@weav.tv), otherwise via twitter (@weavtv) or even subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/weav)
I have noticed the live quality isn't great, but the recording is perfect quality. It could have been that I was watching my own stream, but at least it played smoothly enough.

Going out on a limb here: This might be because my stream keeps hogging a TON of resources. I'm streaming 1080p @ 8k bitrate and 60fps while 60fps and 1080p aren't supported yet. Once I'm done streaming it'll free up a lot of resources. Dunno though.

Why on earth would you be streaming at an 8k bitrate? I've watched streams that were great quality at just 2k.

2 reasons. One is simply because I can, the other is simply that since it's still starting up I figured I might as well stresstest it. Comedian was surprised to find it could already handle it. :v:
