Dreadlocks - Also known as Dreads, Coils or Locks, is a hairstyle that originated from Eastern and some Northern parts of Africa. Although there are other countries and religions/cultures that use dreadlocks to express themselves, Rastafarians have become the best example. In the 1930's in Jamaica, a large religious movement commenced with the Christians called the "Rasta" or the "Rastafarian movement". The followers of these movements (most of them) worshiped Haile Selassie I, a former Emperor of Ethiopia. According to Leviticus 21:5, it is mandatory that Rastafarians do not cut their hair or their nails so they can resemble a Lions mane and claws (a reference to the Lion of the Tribe of Judah). If you are interested in growing dreads on your heads, I will show you in several different approaches. 1 - Backcombing: Probably the most popular way to form even dreadlocks. Some techniques are so rough on the head that each dread could be deformed compared to the next. For this method, you will need hair that is over 3 inches long. First part the hair into sections. Square sections create round dreadlocks. Between 1 inch and 2 inch squares is the regular measurement most people follow. Smaller sections make thinner, more smoother dreads. Each sections can be held in position temporarily with elastics. Once the hair is sectioned properly, use a dread comb to comb your hair in a backwards motion (dread combs can be bought of some special salons, or online). Start combing close to your scalp as possible. Keep combing towards your scalp. Soon, your hair will begin to knot up right at your roots. Keep backcombing, slowly nearing towards the ends of your hair, try to make each dread as tight as possible while you are combing (loose dreads look terrible, and fall apart easily). As you reach the end of your hair, you can secure/position the dread with an other elastic. Elastics on the roots keep the dread tight. The elastic should be taken off after the dread has a chance to mature and grow out smoothly. After each elastic is applied to each dread, the dreads have to be waxed with a dread wax (one that does not contain any petroleum) . Dread wax helps control loose hairs, and speeds up the dread process. Dreads made by backcombing will look very well made as soon as you follow these steps, however it will take time for them to tighten up and make them a lot smoother. Good soap/shampoo and dread wax is the main rule to keep your dreads healthy and to make them mature faster. If you look after your dreads, you could have full dreadlocks in 3 to 4 months. Your hair will continue to dread and knot as it grows in some cases by itself, but most of the time you will have to do it yourself. Do not rely on your hair to just knot itself after you started dreading, its a very long process and takes time! If your dreads ever start to loosen or you have large strands of hair popping out everywhere, just put another elastic on the root of your dread, that should bring it back in position. 2 - Wool Hat/Sweater Rubbing: This is a fairly simple technique, all you need is a wool hat or clothing item. First, grab your wool item and rub sections of your head for around 10 - 15 minutes. Do this until every inch of your head with hair on it starts to knot together and form rough coils. Now the painful part, as your hair starts to knot, you need to separate each knot into single dreads (this will be tugging and pulling on the roots of your hair, so take a few brakes in necessary). After you have started to make dreads, you need to continue rubbing for another 10 -15 Minutes until you are satisfied with the amount of dreads you have created. This process is rough, it hurts and you are bound to lose hair. You will most likely to have strands of wool on your hair, but that can be easily washed out (and yes, people with dreadlocks wash their hair. That is a myth that they don't). 3 - Neglect: This technique could take up to 2- 3 years for it to be complete. Basically, you let your hair grow until it seems it can't grow any further. You need your hair to be at least 10 inches for the knots to look like dreads, and during the 3 year process, you need to wash your hair (once again, "Neglect" doesn't mean to abandon every sanitary option for your hair. Keep it clean, this will speed up the growing speed). You need to knot your hair during the growing process as well as rip it into dreads, and like I said it could take up to three years, so you have to be very patient. 4 - Perming: This is the easiest way to get some Dreadlocks if you've got 300$ to spend. You need to go to a salon specialist that will do this for you. The usage of chemicals is mandatory, and this not not considered a "natural" way by any means. There are many other steps to form dreadlocks, but these steps I think are most common and can get you the dreads you want. I'll try to answer any questions (I am not an expert by any means, but I know my way around the dreading business).

Wat. Also I wish I had Dreadlocks
I'd wear dreads, but I understand you can't really wash your hair afterwards... I don't like that

Yee, sorry I fixed it
White people with dreadlocks look like tramps/bums
That looks very terrible.
That looks very terrible.
It looks find once you comb it back and tie it, this guy most likely just rubbed it, and hasnt put it in position
dreads are like nice neighbors that don't call the police if you have loud house parties
Hairstyles are for people who haven't appreciated the true worth of a good hat yet.
Girls with dreads can look attractive if they're done right.

Holy shit that looks awful. Dreadlocks look so bad on white people.
Not wanting to sound racist, but dreadlocks only works on black people unless you wanna look like a gross hippie.
My brother had dreadlocks for a while, they looked fine but that might be because we're mixed race, golden brown like a perfect piece of toast [editline]25th June 2011[/editline]
That looks very terrible.
Ahaha yes they do. Might be because he has such a high hairline and they're badly made + they stick out like fuck. Put them backwards
Girls with dreads can look attractive if they're done right.
I agree, they can, but it's not for everyone and as you stated it needs to be done right. Like this :3
This is the most disgusting hairstyle I've ever seen. A dude at school had them and it honestly looks like someone took spray paint or something and sprayed your hair and you didn't bother to wash it.

I've always wanted dreads, i'm tempted to try and get them done sometime. Even if I'm white, i've seen white guys pull it off quite well.
Does anyone have any good tutorials for tieing up your dreadlocks? like the guy in the second image

I'M WHOOPSIE!
Also ffffuuuuuck it hurts to make dreadlocks. atleast the way i got them! the groomer started with backcombing, which hurt, and then went on to pack the fuzzy strings of hair with really really hard wax and let me tell you if you didn't know before, dry hair versus hard hard wax is a painful fucking story.
How are you gonna have a Dreadlocks thread and not mention Korn? (Also it just occurred to me that Dreadlocks sounds like some kind of super hard to get open pad lock from WoW or something.)
Good dreadlocks on white people:
Ridiculously ugly
Dreadlocks only work on black people.
Please, we all know the only one worthy of dreads is Garrett Hunter
