Holy shit, this is NOT OK, EA.
anyone who justifies microtransactions in gaming, or said that microtransactions would never transcend into "real" games is insane
its depressing that gamed as niche as dungeon keeper and evil genius and age of empires and stronghold have been mutilated like this, and everyone seems to think its totally fine or not a big deal
The only games I've ever payed a micro-transaction for is TF2 (I bought one of those ticket things for mannvsmachine) and 6 bucks in warthunder.
These mobile games are just terrible though.

Microtransactions are fine. What isn't fine is what some companies think is acceptable as a microtransaction. Cosmetics, temporary XP boosters, Keys for lockboxes that contain cosmetics or alternate mounts, premium aircraft or tanks that are only better at making in-game money or XP, All fine.
Power over players, access to Content within a "Free to Play" title (Call it a Trial you dipshits, that's what it is in this case) premium items that are better than standard items that you can't get from in-game methods, and then there's this, all completely unfucking acceptable
It's... I don't know what it is. They say free to play, but there's nothing to play unless you pay. Well that doesn't sound too bad, they just labeled it wrong, it isn't free to play, so what's the big deal? Except you have to pay an extortionate amount of money to do the smallest most dismal of tasks. $1.50 to dig out one square, where rooms are made up of 25 or 30 squares, where there's many rooms. OR you can wait 24 hours per square.
Not really much of a game so much as a fancy and expensive tip jar

there was a time when these cosmetic items were just a cool, unique addition to a game

Cosmetics I think are one of the best forms of microtransaction. It doesn't impact the game and people can feel unique.
i'd prefer a subscription model to a microstransaction one; the latter has become stockholm-syndrome integrated into the gaming community and thats a sad thing
at least with a sub based model, (not including payment for the base game) you pay for a game so long as you enjoy it, for a relatively cheap amount of money; this allows the developers to get paid, and funds stuff like server costs and such
everyone is at the same base level, and as long as the players are happy, they will continue to play, and thus continue to fund the running and continuation of the game; microtransactions in general are just a new sub model that has gone from "large playerbase paying a relatively small amount" to "large playerbase that plays for free, but we force lazy/addicted players to pay extortionate amounts of money to continue the game"
there was a time when these cosmetic items were just a cool, unique addition to a game
Hey I know, but if it means the game is open to everyone at any time with no monetary commitment then all the better. I think a game like WoW is even taking the piss, charging for the game and its expansions and a monthly fee on top of that. Personally it should be one or the other if you ask me, and if they want some extra cash then throw in some cosmetic microtransactions (Which they also do, the greedy shits)
Games like World of Tanks/War Thunder, Perfect World, EvE, Guild Wars, Team Fortress 2, Blacklight, They do Free to Play right. They give Free to Play a good name. EvE isn't technically free to play but if you make the in-game money, which isn't hard, it can be. All these games are extremely good value for what you put into them, if anything at all. Some of the best Hours per Dollar you can spend on entertainment
All you need is cosmetics. People will pay an assload of money to look unique, or to have what other people consider rare. And it's perfectly okay to charge a little money for some extra unique options. It doesn't affect the game at all, only individual experience. But claiming to be free to play and charging for what is essential to the game (Especially a ridiculous amount like Dungeon Keeper here) is not okay. And this is just more evidence that EA has lost it. Completely lost it
I knew micro transactions on mobile games were bad, but I didn't know it was this bad.

I prefer pay once, no subscriptions and MAYBE cosmetic microtransactions if they really do need some extra cash.
Sorry but I won't pay each month for a game that I might play for 1 week or maybe more but it will always be a waste of money if you are like me with a very limited budget each month for games.
Meanwhile, I hate free to play games that charge alot for weapons and that need you to grind for them but I think that Valve model works fine and no, it isn't impossible for some studios to do this because of Steam since Path of Exile apparently does just fine without Steam as a cash flow.
I looked at the screenshot of the game itself for literally half of a femtosecond and I recognized all of the shitty mechanics from 99% of all fucking free-to-play games with microtransactions on phones.
It has literally the same UI as every other game out there right now. You collect "coins" which you use to buy and upgrade things, or you buy "gems" that unlock things faster.
How many games of that EXACT fucking gameplay are out there now?
Nowadays it's either that or Temple Run clones.
I saw NerdCubed tweet about this last night but I had no idea it was going to be THIS bad.
The sad thing is that this must work. People must actually buy enough of these micro transactions to make it worth companies shovelling out these games. Morons every one of them.

Exactly, this is the only time it is acceptable. If you have the ability to pay money to win a game then it's a shit game.
TF2 has the best f2p model tbh, you get a lot of weapon drops all the time so you aren't short on selection
And it really isn't hard to get a hat if you really want one, know where to sell all your dupe weapons and it doesn't take long at all
If you're not aware there's a "spirtual remake/successor" of Dungeon Keeper in development called War for the Overworld.
http://wtfogame.com
You can gift the GoG versions of both Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 for $10 to $12.
You guy buy you and several of your friends copies of the original two games for the price of the most amount of gems.
EA, fuck you, you greedy cunts.
Btw, it's also always online. Just to add a shit-covered cherry on top.

no, dota even beats TF2 because literally NOTHING alters the game that you can buy. everything is purely cosmetic.
i prefer games without any microtransactions whatsoever
even if its just cosmetics it annoys me, because it feels like different models and items should be accessible and obtainable in the base game
one valid microtransaction i think is in mmos where you can buy a name change or bigger stashes (unless the stashes were made small just to incentivise buying larger stashes).
How are people still suprised about EA being shit?

It always is annoying when a game boasts customization but as soon as you actually want to customize you get default and stock1 then a million micro transaction locked cosmetics, its pretty scummy

infectonator is the original and only good game like this

Under optimum conditions, no dupes, maxed drops every week and no crates, it will take at least a month and a half to get every weapon that changes gameplay. And that's really awful.
This is what will happen to every franchise from now on will get a f2p micro transition mobile ressurection
This is what will happen to every franchise from now on will get a f2p micro transition mobile ressurection
Sadly this is too true. So many potentially good mobile games are plagued with awful f2p models.

It's not even a cherry. It's one of them little nuggets of poo.

I also think Marvel Heroes is another great example of free-2-play done right. You can beat the main story bit, and then do the standard mmo stuff like go on raids and all that without hitting a single paywall or something begging for money. Shit, there's a bunch of exclusive items and rare stuff you CAN'T pay for and have to do special things in-game to get. Also a huge amount (maybe all) of the stuff you can pay for, is all acquirable in-game without paying anything for it.

Well
People usually give weapons to new players if the ask for them regardless
And if you REALLY need a weapon, like, right now, you can test run it for 24 hours and you have the choice during that to buy it at 50% off if you so desire (50% off stacks with sales too)
Sadly you can only test run one at a time but :v:
