We spent a week animating and building the city for this presentation which was ultimately turned down by Sega. This was the first step towards a gameplay demo. If Sega was interested we were going to invest in making a functioning prototype. See the artwork here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/qmDaN
Oof my heart
Sega you better have a jet set game being made to turn this down because this looks great
Sega you better have a jet set game being made to turn this down because this looks great
I really hope so...otherwise, do they not want tons of money thrown at them? It's odd. :s:
Such great character designs! I HATE Sega for turning this down! They had better have a JSR game in development..
At least Hover can fill the void of no JSR games ever coming out. IIRC another studio in 2006 came up to Sega with concept of a JSR game on the wii and got denied as well.

Last piece of information we got of Sega about Jet Set Radio was in 2009 where another developer also pitched a sequel but it denied as well, on top of that they also said they were not interested in making a new Jet Set Radio for any console but this was back in 9 years ago so i guess it doesn't really count anymore. Also Jet Set Radio Future turned 15 years this year but Sega didn't even really acknowledge this with any post on social media, really hoping they do turn their attention back at Jet Set Radio.
Meanwhile they put Beat in Sega All-stars Racing...
The least Sega could do is port future to PC
The least Sega could do is port future to PC
Considering we got Jet Set Radio HD I'm surprised they haven't done Jet Set Radio Future HD yet.
As much as I want another Jet Set Radio, there's some interesting choices going on in this video, I can kinda understand why it was turned down, since this really isn't the most best presentation. For example I wanna say the faux gameplay seemed a bit slow, and well that shot on Gum is a pretty spicy one. Has a really good style though, and I'd pay big money to see another Jet Set Radio game, or even just Jet Set Radio Future redone in HD for modern systems.

Also I didn't play future but I thought the JSR universe didn't have any scifi so why is there a robot? Also the stage shown isnt that interesting, I feel like you'd have to actually live in Japan or have a really good understanding of the place to capture the cities and architecture.
Man they better have something in mind for the Jet Set franchise I seriously hate IP hoarding where franchises just sit in a closet unused for decades, if you're not going to use the property fuckin' sell it or license it out or something
pretty much this, it looked slow and didn't show anything interesting. Also I didn't play future but I thought the JSR universe didn't have any scifi so why is there a robot? Also they said that they would've invested in a functional demo and i think they should've done that to demonstrate rather than what they showed here.
Meanwhile they put Beat in Sega All-stars Racing...
Vyse and a whole Skies of Arcadia track were also in that game but we're never going to get another Skies of Arcadia, so it's hard to take anything away from that.
Gameplay wise it looked way too slow, JSR isn't the fastest game out there but that grind was painful. And I get they were trying to do something other than straight up cel shading with those weird horizontal lines in the shadows and the bright outlines, it just doesn't work. This is just me but while that's a great refresh of the JSRF design, I'll always prefer the original game's designs. Much simpler. I have no faith in sega to do what I actually want them too after they dropped the ball with PSO2 for NA. That concept looked hella rad though, albeit a bit slow, still fuckin' cool though. I wouldn't be surprised though if they don't wanna do a new JSR game because they know they wouldn't be able to put in a make your own graffiti thing without it being abused horribly. And not having it would cause a bunch of backlash most likely
Also I didn't play future but I thought the JSR universe didn't have any scifi so why is there a robot?
You played Jet Set Radio but don't recognize a Noise Tank successor when you see one? Turn in your Jet Set Radio badge. You're off the case.

Sega looked at this and said no... I'm so fucking angry. I can't even look at the video in the OP all the way through, it's so heartbreaking [editline]17th December 2017[/editline] Also guys, I mean sure it looks slow but... it's a prototype with the intent of showing off the characters and visuals in motion. Pretty sure they can tweak everything else after that. I don't think this was supposed to represent the final game in any stretch, and honestly for Sega to reject this is STILL completely egregious
mate why is everyone so baffled that sega isn't willing to throw potentially millions of dollars on something that is "yeah it's good but has flaws" if you had a few million bucks would you just give it to these guys and say go make a game? that's a lot of fucking money
i mean, they funded sonic forces and boom
i mean, they funded sonic forces and boom
doesnt really change the fact that would you honestly pay a few mil for this
doesnt really change the fact that would you honestly pay a few mil for this
yes? you're asking the wrong crowd, a lot of people itt would, if they were in charge, invest in a new jet set radio game, because it's exactly what they want, and rightfully so what are you even trying to prove here? [editline]18th December 2017[/editline] these guys presented a pretty well done proof of concept, and the only complaint ive seen is "its too slow!!" as if that's something that's going to be a problem for actual development
mate why is everyone so baffled that sega isn't willing to throw potentially millions of dollars on something that is "yeah it's good but has flaws" if you had a few million bucks would you just give it to these guys and say go make a game? that's a lot of fucking money
Do you know what a proof of concept is man? Most of the time it's either a barely working barebones prototype of an idea, or in certain cases, a visual animation representation of a game that probably has no gameplay to begin with. It's like putting something on paper and saying "this is basically what i want to make, take a look". What you're seeing in OP's video is most likely literally just an animation, put together in a game engine. It's a miracle that they even got as far as they did art-wise in a proof of concept to begin with. The idea is clearly showing off how they would potentially evolve JSR's artstyle and gameplay. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it was revealed later on that they slowed down the grind to better demonstrate the animation. here's a few "proof-of-concept"s that might give you an idea of what companies have to do to even start making whatever they want to do. I can see why it was turned down by sega, mostly because there are some off choices for shaders and desings, but ultimately I wouldn't be surprised of the reason why it was rejected is Sega's lack of interest in more sequels/remakes after the failures that were Altered beast and Golden Axe's. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if this is not the only pitch sega has got for a sequel to JSR - is one of those franchises that ooze with charisma and i'm pretty sure that not only fans but developers alike would love to be the ones to bring it back.
A bunch of Twitch Streamers are getting together this Friday and Saturday for a 100% race of JSRF, they're hoping to show Sega that plenty of people want an HD port. Doesn't sound incredibly organized but hey it's something.
the demo was severely lacking, but was super promising given good portion of this was slapped together in a week. I can understand sega not giving their seal of approval to this demo, but turning it down altogether is upsetting given it shows there's devs who can faithfully produce this content, provided they're granted resources and a decent art director to shape up their style a bit.

It's a CG teaser to show off what JSR now could look like.
