Trump praises Australian universal health care system at meeting with prime minister
President Donald Trump had kind words for the Australian health care system at a meeting with that country's prime minister Thursday, just hours after Republican members of Congress succeeded in passing their efforts to roll back the Affordable Care Act.
“We have a failing health care -- I shouldn't say this to our great gentleman and my friend from Australia because you have better health care than we do," said Trump.
The remarks were quickly seized upon by progressive critics of the president, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, who have long advocated for a government-run universal health care option, similar to Australia's Medicare system.
"The president has just said it. That's great. Let's take a look at the Australian health care system, and let's move," said Sanders shortly afterward in an interview on MSNBC. "Maybe he wants to take a look at the Canadian health care system or systems throughout Europe. Thank you, Mr. President. Let us move to a Medicare-for-all system that does what every other major country does."
the article itself is longer and talks on a variety of topics, but this is the introduction.

Can somebody tell Trump that the AHCA isn't actually in effect yet?

As bad as the AHCA will be, the ACA was far from perfect also. I'd wait to see what the Senate does to the new bill before declaring it as a failure.
I mean as it stands, yeah. But that's the thing; Senate will (hopefully) have a hayday with it before it's final, assuming it will pass anyway.
Video of Bernie laughing.

putting sweetener to poison still doesn't change the core substance, with the massive medicare, medicade funding changes which fundimentally cap the program's growth our healthcare system will explode in 10 years or less.

Bernie never stops being amazing.

I could listen to that laugh all day.
What a fucking imbecile lol. Congrats on undermining yourself.
If Trump's administration, by some insane miracle, passes real universal health care, I don't care if he takes credit for it despite his party doing its best to cripple health care in general for decades. At least it'll be there and all Americans will finally enjoy the health care they've always deserved.
But my money's on this just being Trump coming up with something to fellate Turnbull/Australians for brownie points, a meaningless piece of smalltalk out of businessman Don.
It is funny to think about the possibility of Donald accidentally/unintentionally putting socialized healthcare in place.

He wont.
The thing is, he's praising this because he doesn't understand what he's doing with his own, let alone what he's actually praising.
You know, our healthcare system isn't exactly clear cut. Although Donald has a tendency to praise or deride things which he has no idea about, there is room for confusion anyways. Although Australia does have universal healthcare, private health insurance is still a big part of it, and the government pushes hard for people to move away from burdening the public system, towards the private system.
Eg you can get basic singles cover which includes ambulance, accident cover, dental and optical for only $20 per week.

Well yeah, but your private insurance makes some sense. At least surviving domestic abuse isn't considered a pre-existing condition by your guys (I think and hope...)

How much would something like that cost in America under the current system?
To me it looks like he's sorta learning actual diplomacy.
Didn't insult the foreign leader once in this segment!

And it only took him 3 months! Great strides!

Truly he became president today, unlike when he became president all those other times
