Companies in the video games industry have released earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here's a look at selected companies that make or sell video games or machines.
— Oct. 18: Microsoft Corp. says Xbox 360 platform revenue fell 24 percent, or $418 million, mostly because of fewer consoles sold and lower revenue from video games software. The year-ago quarter saw the release of "Gears of War 3," with no comparable major releases in the just-ended quarter. That was offset partly by higher revenue from its Xbox Live subscription service.
— Oct. 24: Nintendo Co. says it narrowed its losses in the six months through September, but the Japanese game maker lowered its sales and profit forecasts for the full year ahead of the launch of its new Wii U home console.
— Oct. 26: GameStop Corp. says it plans to open about 80 holiday stores aimed at younger kids. The stores will feature video games, accessories and licensed products for younger kids. This includes Activision's "Skylanders," as well as "Angry Birds" toys and mugs and the Lego series of video games.
— Oct. 30: Electronic Arts Inc.'s outlook falls short of most Wall Street expectations. The video game publisher posts a loss of $1.21 per share, compared with a loss of $1.03 per share a year earlier.
— Oct. 31: Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. exceeds Wall Street expectations with gamers snapping up popular sequels like "Borderlands 2" and "Grand Theft Auto IV." The earnings beat comes one day after the Rockstar Games unit of Take-Two announced that the next installment of "Grand Theft Auto," one of the best-selling games of all time, would hit shelves in the spring.
— Nov. 1: Sony Corp.'s game unit suffers as the drop in hardware and software sales of the PlayStation 3 home console was not offset by the sales of the new PS Vita hand-held machine.
— Wednesday: Video game maker Activision Blizzard Inc. issues quarterly results that topped analysts' forecasts. Management predicts more good times in the crucial holiday shopping season thanks to the latest edition in its popular "Call of Duty" franchise. Activision credits "Diablo III," a role-playing game designed for personal computers, and its latest version of "World of Warcraft" for moving its latest quarter to a higher level.
— Thursday: Research firm NPD says U.S. retail sales of new video game hardware, software and accessories fell 25 percent in October, marking the 11th straight month of declining sales for physical game products. Many gamers are waiting for big holiday releases such as Activision's "Call of Duty: Black Ops II."
Hrrrm. Physical Game Products = Going Down .... I smell the age of the next Barnes and Noble/Borders melt down for VG stores...
Stagnation. Nothing is happening in the gaming market right now.
Once new consoles get announced and released, things will change.

If the rumors about Sony's PS4 turn out to be true (even half-true), then things will get going for a while.

I'd put money on the next generation having a lot more focus on digital distribution.

Actually, I bet we will see a huge influx of profits when the Q4 report comes out, since of the release of the Wii U.
Actually, I bet we will see a huge influx of profits when the Q4 report comes out, since of the release of the Wii U.
Considering that I just found out from your post that Wii U is actually close to getting released, I'm not so sure :v:
I don't see why you would. People are going to want to hold out until release. Why buy games for an older console when a new one is going to come out soon? Therefore sales will fall until release.
Considering that I just found out from your post that Wii U is actually close to getting released, I'm not so sure :v:
The fact that is sold out so damn quickly when preorders became available, it is going to be the Wii launch all over again.
more singleplayer games that are lengthier and stop leeching the fuck off MP.
Considering that I just found out from your post that Wii U is actually close to getting released, I'm not so sure :v:
WIIU seems to be marketed more towards children and housewives than actual "hardcore" gamers. Plus a good majority of "hardcore" gamers would rather save their money for a PS4 or Xbox720(or whatever they decide to call it)
We're at the end of a console generation after 7 long years, it's expected that Microsoft and Nintendo are dropping in profits. Nintendo will need some fresher IPs because New Super Mario Brothers 2 WiiU is already stale and Microsoft will have to deliver on a solid console that third party devs will like. Sony on the other hand is in the shit and with the Vita failing and little attention on the PS4, they're in for a tough few years maybe seeing the axing of Sony's video games branches.
Gamespot targeting younger audiences is important, we need to maintain those who grew up with it if we're not going to end up how comics did, this adaptation however isn't going to work. They're a retailer and vidya retailers are going to shit, but with so much online and able to be done through more diverse retailers, this is only going to be a novelty which ends badly.
more singleplayer games that are lengthier and stop leeching the fuck off MP.
Just because you prefer single player doesn't mean everyone else does. There's a reason why multiplayer is so commonplace now, it's because the average gamer wants it.
The consoles today are obviously getting extremely outdated, are we are long overdue
I say a DD based gaming console that's well tested and well built will do very marvelously. Imagine being able to do what you do with steam, but on your TV!

That's not how it works, the reason it's so popular is because it works and they're trying to emulate the success of other multiplayer games.
It's the same old shit that's always been around, copy the most obvious bits rather than the core mechanics. CoD 4 was in a fresh setting and gave tight, easy multiplayer? We'd better copy the setting and tack on shitty multiplayer just because.
as long as PC gaming is doing fine (it is) I don't care
This is nothing but good news, this will force MS and Sony to kill this fucking overlonged generation

First of all, that's not a word.
More importantly, Playstation 1 came out in 1994, 2 came out in 2000, and 3 came out in 2006.
It's now 2012. There's nothing "overlonged" about this generation.
The playstation 2 still has regular releases.
The playstation 2 still has regular releases.
Not anymore. The only games that came out in the states for the ps2 in 2012 were fifa 13 and mlb 2k12. It's still popular in japan though, just like the psp.
I have a feeling handhelds are becoming way less popular because every kid gets an iPhone or smart phone and gets a supply of (technically) unlimited games that they can take around anywhere without being criticized for being "that nerd who brings video games to school."
The Xbox 360's sales definitely should be going down. It's been out, for what, 6 or so years? You'd think anyone who'd want one has one by now. Not to mention Halo 4 and Black Ops II (although I have a feeling it won't be selling that well after MW3) are right around the corner, so sales probably will go up.
Once everyone gets off this really retardedly long lasting generation of consoles, I'm pretty sure sales'll pick up.

Oh wow, really?
I honestly felt like Playstation I and II came right after each other. Granted I was born 3 years after the first came out. :v:

Mobile phones are a decent market but they're not the only thing around. The DS has a lot more in-depth games which are selling well, especially in Japan. The acceptance of games on phones also leads to these other forms being just as socially acceptable meaning other that while handhelds lose out on the convenience part, they strengthen their position with other games.
Of course it's easy to overdesign it and try for something superpowered such as the Vita. Excessive processing power is the marketing mistake they made on the PS3 and they made it again on the Vita. That was kinda retarded.
We're at the end of a console generation after 7 long years, it's expected that Microsoft and Nintendo are dropping in profits.
No, it isn't. That's reasonable until you think for a second about what you're saying.
Nintendo has kept steady profits in the year before each previous console launch- Wii, Gamecube, Nintendo 64, none of them were preceded by a dip. They were often followed by a dip, either a year or two after. Only the Wii would be breaking this cycle, since it led into skyrocketing profits, and they took forever to trail off.
This is the dying of a fad. Nintendo's income is finally normalizing at pre-Wii levels.
can't wait for game stores to completely die out, rather pay 30 bux online for a physical copy and wait 2 days than pay 60 because a store needs to make a profit
If that's so, then why do I pay $60 for digital copies.
First of all, that's not a word.

1994?
Wow, I thought I was younger or just as old.
I wouldn't mind going back to those times. Video games back then were ungodly fun.
They still are but... It seems like nowadays they have a cold soul... I don't know...
can't wait for game stores to completely die out, rather pay 30 bux online for a physical copy and wait 2 days than pay 60 because a store needs to make a profit
yeah, then with no competition the online retailers will totally keep prices low and competitive.
They would jack up the prices faster then anyone without any real competition.

Maybe previous Nintendo consoles followed that pattern but as you say, the Wii was exceptional. Releasing a new console while the other is still going strong doesn't always work, look at the PS2. They've worked more out of the Wii and it's doing what any of their other consoles would have if let go on longer, it's losing profitability and it's time to update.
It may be a fad but if they play it well, they can keep it going into the next generation. Releasing the WiiU while the Wii still has some popularity but after it is expected to maintain profitability is good timing and releasing it before other consoles should give the same edge the Xbox 360 had. If they can get their first party games back to old levels they'll be in great shape, Miyamoto working on a new Pikmin should help.

They've got competition from other online retailers and the ease of comparability means they can't even hide behind advertising. It's true with online PC retailers already having means to get the best price, it'll be true when console shipping becomes more prevalent.
I predict PS4 and WiiU suffering, or not doing as well due to lack of interest by the average consumers
Microsoft's 720(?) is going to end up the winner of the console war due to its legion of retarded fans
just keep pumping out doritos and mountain dew ads and they are set for life

Uh... hardcore gamers would probably save up for a PC, the majority of console users (or from what I've seen, anyway) are 12 year olds.

good job knowing absolutely nothing
the average age of a console gamer is 37.
there are more adult women who play games than children under 18 who play games.
