• When did game shows loose the imagination?

No game show today is as brilliant and entertaining as gameshows in the past. Sure, Total Wipeout is ok, but you see one episode and you have seen them all. I mean, nothing on TV compares to the likes of The Crystal Maze. This show had teamwork, injuries, robots, lasers, one of the biggest sets to ever be used for a game show and a few games the audience could try figuring out at home. Then it all came together for a brilliant finale in a beautiful set. Yet you see nothing like this today. Click to hear the best theme tune ever (Hard to find a clip of the show that embeds as Channel 4 are Nazis) What about other shows with big imagination? Fucking Knightmare. Brilliant concept. Blinding a kid and sticking him in a virtual reality so his friends can guide him through. This show was amazing, the poor kids made the show what it was when the did genuine stupid things like "SIDE STEP TO YOUR LEFT" and watched as the friend fell to his virtual death. No show is like this, in fact, when they tried to bring it back, they tried to make it 100% shit CGI. The pilot was a disaster and it was stopped dead in it's tracks. Nothing like it exists. Now, Interceptor. Amazing. Very short lived series though. The aim is simple. Two people are given suitcases. One suitcase is full of money but they don't know which. They have to run around the country, find they keys to each-others suitcase and then meet up somewhere in the country. They can use any vehicle they can find. However 'The Inteceptor' is some come kind of crazy mental patient who can lock the suitcases with his ray gun. He chases them in a helicopter. In the above clip a woman thinks she is safe on a "Lorry" and doesn't realise the driver is actually the Interceptor. He makes a lot of odd eagle noises too. But watching this show is too funny. I swear they only choose idiots to play it with no sense of direction. Of course I'm not to familiar with non British game shows, but here's something special. Brilliant, just loads of contestants being put though pain and shit. I can't really do it justice here. I'm sure most of us have seen it. It's basically Total Wipeout/Wipeout(depending where you live) but better. Many other great shows exist too, Fort Boyard, Gladiator and more. Shows were better because unlike today, somebody didn't always win, infact a lot of the time people lost. Badly. I think instead of pumping out more reality singing bullshit, we should bring back some creativity to the game show world, even if it means bringing these babies back.
I fucking LOVE Takeshi's Castle.
Maybe they should... Tighten up. http://instantyeah.org
Oh my god. Crystal Maze/Takeshi's Castle is so much win.
I miss the original American Gladiators. That show was the shit. And I miss Bob Barker on The Price is Right.
The Price is Right! What a classic!
I watched 101 ways to leave a gameshow the other day and it was just dross. It fucking blows my mind how far they've fallen.
They're either underestimating the viewer or.. well, they're thinking we're dumb.
Haha I know Takeshi's Castle. Except its called MXC (Most Xtreme Challenges) and the voices are dubbed over in english with made up dialouge. Goddamn Cablevision. Why'd you take SpikeTV from me?
I fucking LOVE Takeshi's Castle.
Takeshi's Castle was good just for Craig Charles commentary.

Wanna know something really fucking strange? I posted this thread a day or 2 ago. Yet it vanished soon as I posted it. It vanished from my post history, from the page, from everything. I was about to rewrite this shit. Now it's back. What the fuck.
Wow, Crystal Maze looks incredible.
Too much reality TV that real-life becomes a sitcom~ if you ain't got no rhythm we gon' show you how to get some yeaaahhh
Too much reality TV that real-life becomes a sitcom~ if you ain't got no rhythm we gon' show you how to get some yeaaahhh
The punchline? Most reality shows are actually less true-to-life than these old gameshows...
Too much reality TV
Pretty much that. Sitcoms, reality TV and competition shows (Xfactor, im a celeb, dancing on ice, etc etc) are sadly so popular now that good gameshows are being pushed out. I love whacky Japanese gameshows, its hilarious what they get away with doing to people there...
The punchline? Most reality shows are actually less true-to-life than these old gameshows...
The punchline was that I was referencing a now-canceled cartoon.
Total Wipeout is ok
And totally ripped off from Takeshi's Castle/Most Extreme Elimination Challenge and other assorted Japanese gameshows that have been around for decades.
I remember hearing the Price is Right theme every morning I was at my Grandparent's house for ten years. Whenever I hear it I get so nostalgic, I remember the coffee and obscure cheeses my Grandpa would always make us that I will forever associate with Bob Barker
Too much reality TV that real-life becomes a sitcom~ if you ain't got no rhythm we gon' show you how to get some yeaaahhh
Class of 3000 sing!
When did they "loose" the imagination? Pretty sure you meant "lose." LEARN TO SPELL
I want to make a gameshow where if you lose you get incinerated.
I watched 101 ways to leave a gameshow the other day and it was just dross. It fucking blows my mind how far they've fallen.
That show is shit, they really overhype the way they are going to leave, and then they just slowly fall 1 story while attached to a rope in to water. How exciting.
