SEOUL, May 15 — The world’s tallest Lego tower has been erected in South Korean capital Seoul, after five days of work.
The tower, which measures some 31.9 metres in height, took a team of 4,000 children to build and uses some 500,000 bricks.
It begins with a cross formation at the base for stability, and tapers towards the peak, where the final pieces were added with the aid of a hammer to ensure the tower was even.
In a nail-biting finish, Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark, Lego’s original homeland, ascended the tower on a hydraulic platform to press the last brick into place.
The event was scheduled to mark the 80th birthday of the children’s favourite — since its conception by Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932, Lego has become a worldwide phenomenon, with 36 billion bricks produced every year (around 1,140 a second).
The Seoul tower now stands as the tallest Lego structure ever made, having overtaken a tower in France which measured 31.6 metres, although given that the record has been broken some 30 times, it may not be long before it’s toppled again. — AFP-Relaxnews
Take that North Korea!
I want to see it fall.
"36 billion a year, 1140 a second" Holy shit.

What they got against facepunch?!
edit:
There's a fat old metal rod going through it, surely that's cheating!?

Watching this video made me wish I was 8 again. :(
Used a metal pole inside. Wouldn't call it a valid achievement.
I want all that LEGO

This is about existing towers, not fictional ones.
And then the white guy's bully from preschool comes over and kicks it down

I don't get it
Used a metal pole inside. Wouldn't call it a valid achievement.
Just the amount of time and effort it took for those kids alone is a pretty big achievement. Plus it would have probably been knocked over by the wind pretty quick without it.

Dude, that's real. It does not only exist in Mercenries

LEGO is superior to all other man made building materials. You cannot stop the strength of imagination!

I heard the US Army is replacing their mines with fields of lego bricks instead. Those things can cause some serious pain.
Aw, there's a metal support rod. That's like building lego walls around a lamppost.

That'd be the most impenetrable fucking lamppost ever. Knock the wall down and suddenly you step on really sharp edges every time you move.
Fucking hurts.

If any of you have been in a LEGO throwing war with 10 or so other people, you know it hurts like hell when you whip it at people's faces.

Reminds me of the citadel in HL2.
31.9m. Surely it would only have been one small push to get the extra 10cm, and make it a nice round number.
OH WHAT the video's been taken down!

No it hasn't. It's just blocked on Facepunch.

I remember when I tried to build a really tall tower when I was a kid (It would up only being a meter tall, but I was like 8). Then I remember how it fell over, and I stepped on about 5 two by two bricks trying to clean it up.
Good job for them.

To be fair, the Burj Khalifa is rather imposing and pointy, not to mention that it's nearly three thousand feet tall.

I lived in Dubai when I was a kid - When I was about to leave to come to Canada in 2003, I saw a poster promoting the upcoming construction project - It was to be called the Burj Dubai. They changed the name, of course, but I was rather disappointed by the reactions of fellow Canadians to the tower when it exceeded the height of the CN Tower(Which until then had held the world record for tallest freestanding structure in the world). The Toronto Star called it 'Another faceless, ugly oil giant'. I suppose it could be forgiven, though. I don't think it's ugly, but to have the crown of the CN Tower's height from Toronto and see it given to a Middle-Eastern country that's known for affuence, if not honour, must've been painful for Torontonians.

It's probably a lot more structurally sound than the Ryugong Hotel.
