The Future Megathread - "WHAT HAS SCIENCE DOOOOONE?!"
79 replies, posted
Because the future is near and it'd be awesome to make a list of things that (will most likely die out) can improve our lives in the future or just seem pretty damn cool (or pretty fucking down right scary).
[release]List
Things taken from Facepunch, videos and articles.

Faster Than Light Neutrino's. There are more articles and experiments going on about this one and everyone keeps finding the same results of faster travel so this one is a hot-topic!

That's about it, I know it's not much but feel free to share and I'll put it on the list.
Well recently we engineered a virus that could potentially kill off 50% of the earth human population, I think that a pretty strong indicator of what science has in store for us :v: I kind of love it.
Also very weak megathread.

I'm trying to find as much content about this topic as possible. It'll be bigger, I'm sure of it.
Teleportation would be cool, but alas it's not possible to teleport a being
So, near-lightspeed travel is the closest we'd get to teleportation. Unfortunately that's so unfeasible it will never happen.
Whenever I discuss the future I always get disappointed when I discover these things will probably never happen. I blame movies :(

5 Words:
I just updated the list.
Teleportation as we know it can never be achieved. However, there is a huge debate about the other forms of teleportation. The laws of physics cannot be broken at the moment but what if someone figures out a way to break these chains and we can propably be teleported in the future.
Of course my speculation is a long shot and is only based on the facts that I remember, so there is no reference to anything or anyone.
You guys should play some Anno 2070.
It is fantastic, and fun for the futurist in everyone.
Very excited to see what comes of those neutrinos, particle physics gives me a hadron.
Correction, we have sent a super-size rover to Mars. It's called Curiosity, it launched yesterday.

Corrected, thanks.
Now we wait for several months for it to get to Mars :v:
I don't know why USA or Russia just can't send real people to the moon or some other place again. It's maybe safer to let a machine investigate 'unknown' planet for now, but it would just be much more revealing if real scientists would go over there and study the planet as they'd wan't it to be studied.

I think those big-ass suits are the problem. It might be pretty uncomfortable. I think I remember seeing somewhere that some chick designed a new one, way thinner and more comfortable that can be used for mobility in space or whatever.

It lands August 2012, I'm so excited. :downs:
Science isn't about why. It's about why not?
Science isn't about why. It's about why not?
It's about asking why not then either going "You guys were wrong I was right hah" or "I now know why not".
I still think we're in for an orange future.

I'm pretty sure we're in a for a Chrome future.

they have to be kevlar plated, if they are not already that is

Hey, this thread looks interesting.
Anyway, I'm not sure if this is entirely related, but this site is about the future and is also extremely interesting: http://www.futuretimeline.net/
Edit: It's also an incredibly fun read, in my opinion. Gets my future excitement nerves firing.

He looks far too friendly,
this is how I imagined him to be:

You have 20 seconds to comply.

I'd imagine a robot prison guard more like this:

Yeah as soon as we get artificial intelligence, completely prosthetic everything of the human body and just about everything except time travel.
i heard somewhere... (maybe from a drunk hobo, i can't remember) that if we where to terraform mars, they where planning to nuke the icecaps (of mars, not earth, that would be counter-productive)

fuck, the future is terrifying
you forgot this: http://www.forumopolis.com/showthread.php?t=104612

Yes.
Yes I have.
I can see this thread turning into a fiery scientific debate pretty quickly at some point.
Still though, the future is going to be both terrifying (thoughI suppose that's the same whenever you stand on the precipiece of pure unrefined SCIENCE, so touch wood) and totally awesome. Case in point, world's biggest laser. Apparently just pointing ten lasers at the same point makes one fuckhueg laser.

I'm waiting for a handheld version.
