• How to tell my mom why I smoke weed without making her think I'm "addicted"
    23 replies, posted
So last month my mom found out that I'd smoked weed a couple of times recently, for the second time, and she got all pissed and stuff. Shes completely freaked out about it and is worried/concerned that it will screw around with all of the meds I'm prescribed (225 mg of Zoloft, vyvance, and nuvigil taken once a day). I think she is oblivious to the fact that weed just got decriminalized in the state I live in (Connecticut) and I can't get arrested as long as I am not caught with more than 1.5 ounces of weed. She also found out that I'd been robotripping (I've only done it 3 times, and I haven't gone over the 2nd plateau during any of those robotrips) and I told her that I do not want to do it again (which I am not lying about to dissuade her). But anyways, she thinks that I smoke weed to "fit in" with my friends but the real reason I smoke it is because I like how it makes me feel when I'm high, and it also helps alleviate me of some of the symptoms of ADHD and Depression. I don't fidget around as much and don't bite my nails, and I feel very happy and content with myself when/after I smoke even after my high is gone. And when I do smoke she almost always finds out somehow, even though I do it outside of my house and not in the vicinity of my neighborhood. If she finds out that I've smoked again I plan on telling her why I do so. Shes also worried about me driving (or my friends driving me) around whilst high (which I am aware is far less dangerous than driving drunk) and I don't plan on driving under the influence of anything anyways. So basically I want to tell her that I smoke because it feels good and does a lot more to help me with my mental irregularities than my meds do (they do help but aren't as effective I guess). I just want to say it in a way that won't make it look like I'm addicted to it (which is impossible with marijuana anyways, I think) or the effects it has on me. So thats pretty much it. Any help would be appreciated.
First off, congrats on living in Connecticut. I think you just need to tell her, straight up, why you do it. It might help to tell her that Zoloft has more negative side-effects than weed does. Just say "It helps with my depression and ADHD". If she says it doesn't, tell her that she really has no way of knowing how it affects you. I think you just need to be plain and to-the-point about it. Also if none of your friends smoke, say that to try to get her off the "fitting in" thing. Tell her you're old enough and that you have a brain so you can enjoy it responsibly. People who are convinced weed is harmful, I say "You're truly an ignorant fuck if you think weed is that harmful for you" and it usually shuts them up. But I don't think you'd want to say to your mom. I guess you can say it's better than getting drunk off your ass the entire time. If all else fails, put on some sunglasses and tell the bitch to deal with it.
explain that you a smoke from time to time, but you don't get cravings for it. Bring up some evidence to show her it's not addictive
Unfortunately from my own personal experience, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks."

And unfortunately pretty much all of my friends are stoners, but I've turned down having a burn with them and they don't treat me any differently or try to peer pressure me into doing it. She has pee tests laying around for me too.
its only addictive if you make it to be. What i mean is, if you smoke it just to feel good (for your depression) then thats not good. Hard to explain, but anything can become addictive if you make it seem like you 'need' it to feel happy. I mean, you can go ahead and tell her that stuff, but in the end its your responsibility to make sure you arent addicted. Marijuana may not be addictive chemically, but mentally you can make anything into an addiction.
well lets be straight everyone smokes to feel good, but doing so when your depressed often leads to deeper depression

My thoughts on them can be summed up in 2 words: MIGHTY LORD And I'm not as depressed as I used to be and that I admit is partly due to me taking Zoloft. But I still have moments where I feel like shit and I'm just feeling bad about myself. I have a bit of trouble asserting myself with my mom anyhow and I'm a bit submissive and kind of a "yes man" type of person. But I feel that if I nut-up and just be bold about telling her why I do it she might respect me more. Shes also a bit paranoid because our neighbor's son who I've known since I was a wee laddy got arrested by the po-po in a raid on his house because he was dealing. And hes only 17 years old. But I don't plan on dealing though so as long as I only have under 1.5 ounces I should be good.
Hey, I'm from CT and take vyvanse too :D
vyvanse kicks my fucking ass, that shit is good stuff
I love it how on DD I still find out about drugs I havent heard of.
Sorry I couldn't give you much more than that.
Vyvanse is amazing. I stole my cousins vyvanse pills, took 3 over 4 days. Just mixed it with a drink and swallowed the cap, i was talking constantly for 6 hours, and didnt eat or sleep for 12 :P

Show her the book 'Marijuana is Safer: So why are we driving people to drink?' It's written by some of the NORML guys and is really pretty informative.
I want Illinois to decriminalize marijuana, damnit.
keep it a secret till u move out
keep it a secret till u move out
God only knows when thats going to happen. I should just finish up college in california and get a Medicinal Marijuana card.
make her watch the union
I agree with the above post. What I would do in your situation is basically say "I'm willing to spend however long it takes you to watch the union reviewing your facts and opinions about marijuana, as well as the facts that you do bring up". Watching the Union can be a really eye-opening experience for some people.
