[release]A Libyan student who sexually assaulted seven girls and women in Melbourne has been jailed for more than five years.[/release]
Almahde Ahmad Atagore, 28, had been in Australia only a month and was having trouble adapting to the Australian culture when he committed the attacks, a court heard. Atagore, who is a Muslim, was upset and sexually aroused at the way women in Australia dressed and behaved, the Victorian County Court heard today. Between August and September last year Atagore, who was in Australia on a Libyan government scholarship, embarked on a string of sexual assaults over four days in Mentone and at Flinders Street railway station. His youngest victim was just 13. Sentencing Atagore, Judge Margaret Rizkalla said she accepted there was a link between the cultural issues, along with Atagore's depression, and the offences. "It seems you were very ill prepared to deal with cultural differences," she said. Judge Rizkalla said the assaults required strong condemnation, as they occurred when the victims were simply walking in a public area. She jailed Atagore, who pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rape, committing an indecent act with a child under 16 and five counts of indecent assault, for five years and three months. Atagore must serve a minimum of three years in prison before being eligible for parole. The court heard Atagore, who has already served 259 days in custody, will likely be deported when he completes his sentence.
Ignorance of a culture and its laws are no excuse. :colbert: SOURCE (User was banned for this post ("Don't deliberately mislead users/promote Islamophobia by putting bullshit in the title, I edited it for you. 5 Years for raping 7 Women that can't be right.
What absolute bullshit. News from Australia seems to get dumber and dumber by the day.
There is also the fact that he'll most likely get deported.
There is also the fact that he'll most likely get deported.
But he'll only serve 5 years in jail. Which is bullshit.
Probably getting lots of bad response on this, but I've been losing my respect for muslims the last years. But as with all things, there are exceptions ofcourse
this is stupid.
Probably getting lots of bad response on this, but I've been losing my respect for muslims the last years.
why? because you're a bigot?
The magistrate did actually say that cultural differences was a bullshit excuse earlier on, however there was pressure on Australia from Libya, and the Libyan government paid for his defence IIRC. That kind of prison term isn't unheard of in the slightest. And he's getting deported anyway.
But he'll only serve 5 years in jail. Which is bullshit.
Facing the threat of getting deported to a country isn't necessarily a nice thing.
Probably getting lots of bad response on this, but I've been losing my respect for muslims the last years. But as with all things, there are exceptions ofcourse
Lol all of them are bad except a few. Nice logic, do you want me to take a few white mass murderers and say that all white people are bad except for a few exceptions?
Facing the threat of getting deported to a country isn't necessarily a nice thing.
Neither is raping 7 women. 7
Or how about that other thread about the millionaire who bribed his way out of prison. Does the action of one mean that most millionaires are evil?
Probably getting lots of bad response on this, but I've been losing my respect for muslims the last years. But as with all things, there are exceptions ofcourse
The Muslims that do this shit are the exceptions. The vast majority of Muslims are good people.
You gotta be bullshitting me.
That is absolutely horrible. The same thing happens in the US a lot too.
"Political correctness" for the win
The Muslims that do this shit are the exceptions. The vast majority of Muslims are good people.
Too bad the exemption tends to be very vocal, and also do lots of stupid shit. The sane one's should kick their asses for making them look bad
why? because you're a bigot?
Or maybe because millions of people use that as an excuse to justify sexism and the like? And while analogues definitely exist, for example, Westboro Church, I wish there was a strongest stance from the Muslim community against fundamentalism. That said, even if there was, it probably wouldn't be reported on too much. And while I acknowledge cultural differences exist, and should be respected, I draw the line at affecting the rights of others, otherwise "nah mate, slavery is just part of my culture/religion/whatever, don't discriminate against me bro" is legitimated, and most reasonable people agree that slavery is unequivocally wrong.
Time to become a muslim I see. Basically a get out of jail free card, or at least in aussie land.
It was also classed as assault, not rape, and he pleaded guilty, so that might explain the not as harsh punishment. Regardless he should he probably should have a harsher punishment, although being deported to Libya is a pretty bad punishment right now as is.
Become Muslim, go to Australia, rape seven women, get 5 years in prison. Sounds like a good deal.
The difference between Islam and Christianity, is that (outside America), Christianity has no real substantial influence on the state, at least compared to the terrible fundamentalist autocratic and theocratic regimes of the middle east.
there is obviously more to this [editline]4th June 2011[/editline]
Christianity has no real substantial influence on the state
Uganda and friends
Become Muslim, go to Australia, rape seven women, get 5 years in prison. Sounds like a good deal.
Sentences tend to range from 5-10 for a string of indecent assaults. We focus much more on rehabilitation than punishment.
lol cultral difference does Australia think that muslims rape woman on a daily basis or something
Probably getting lots of bad response on this, but I've been losing my respect for muslims the last years. But as with all things, there are exceptions ofcourse
I hope you're not just judging them based on what you here on the news. thats like saying i'm losing respect for Christians because some priests raped some boys. But, still 7 years is just stupid.
Christianity has no real substantial influence on the state
Uganda and friends
lol cultral difference does Australia think that muslims rape woman on a daily basis or something
It's not rape if you're married. Under that system. [editline]5th June 2011[/editline]
Uganda and friends
I said Christianity, not an illogical mix of animism and Christianity, with a (un)healthy dose of miscellaneous supernatural belief.
Or maybe because millions of people use that as an excuse to justify sexism and the like? And while analogues definitely exist, for example, Westboro Church, I wish there was a strongest stance from the Muslim community against fundamentalism. That said, even if there was, it probably wouldn't be reported on too much.
I wouldn't really call Westboro an analogue since they hate everyone while the radical Muslims just hate the West. I would consider radical republicans more of an analogue since they preach similar ideas of intolerance, just based against each other. Both sides also are hard to defend if you just judged by news reports. I'm sure there are a ton of moderate republicans like how most Muslims don't condone these acts, you just here about moderate people in the news because, who wants to hear about what the majority does? Yeah, what news network would want to report "Muslims preach intolerance
