Good concept albums are like good concept cars - they're too special to be too common.
In this thread we discuss concept albums.
In music, a concept album is an album that is "unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical". Commonly, concept albums tend to incorporate preconceived musical or lyrical ideas rather than being improvised or composed in the studio, with all songs contributing to a single overall theme or unified story. This is in contrast to the practice of an artist or group releasing an album consisting of a number of unconnected songs performed by the artist.
Essential Concept Albums:

Concept albums are known for being virtually immortal (forever lasting), and usually garner widespread critical acclaim via reviews. Concept albums can range style-wise anywhere from the ideas of psychedelic space rock from the modern radio pop we know today. Feel free to suggest content for me to edit in the OP. And happy posting!
The Who's Tommy should be there. Opeth should also be mentioned De-Loused in the Comatorium or Frank the Mute - The Mars Volta Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson [editline]15th May 2011[/editline] The Human Equation - Ayreon
Needs Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick and Transatlantic's The Whirlwind.
Done :colbert:
Needs Mastodons Crack the Skye. It has Rasputin and a quadriplegics soul fighting the devil inside a black hole, that conceptual enough? :v:
Also, if this was a true megathread, it would have a few sentences of background underneath each album cover. :smug:
The OP is forever expanding :mmmsmug: [editline]15th May 2011[/editline]
Also, if this was a true megathread, it would have a few sentences of background underneath each album cover. :smug:
Maybe when I can be fucked :downs:
Add Opeth's Still Life to the OP.
I think about 3 of In Flames' albums are concept, I just have to check which ones. Nop, turns out only one is, Whoracle.
Done and done
I think about 3 of In Flames' albums are concept, I just have to check which ones. Nop, turns out only one is, Whoracle.
I'm pretty sure The Jester Race is too. Colony might be but I'm not sure, the story is hard to follow if it is.
burzum?
I'm pretty sure The Jester Race is too. Colony might be but I'm not sure, the story is hard to follow if it is.
Colony is just a general topic, not a specific concept album.
Put in Porcupine Tree albums: The Incident (This is like their staple concept album) Deadwing (Noone really realises it but this is a loose concept album)
Diamond Dogs - David Bowie The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein - Parliament Autobahn - Kraftwerk
We are discussing what to add to the OP :smug:
Add Spiritualized and Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants in there. [editline]15th May 2011[/editline] Also, add OK Computer and Titus Andronicus' Moniter. [editline]15th May 2011[/editline] Archandroid too :v:
Put in Porcupine Tree albums: The Incident (This is like their staple concept album) Deadwing (Noone really realises it but this is a loose concept album)
It's not so much a loose concept album as an album with a backstory they've just neglected to explain, probably because Steven Wilson is trying to make it into a movie :v:
All of Mastodon's albums (except Remission and [if you consider it a proper album] Call of the Mastodon]) are concept albums.
All of Mastodon's albums (except Remission and [if you consider it a proper album] Call of the Mastodon]) are concept albums.
I'm not too sure Leviathan has a strong concept. Maybe I'm wrong.
I'm not too sure Leviathan has a strong concept. Maybe I'm wrong.
It's about water.
Every ISIS album
It's about water.
How exactly?
How exactly?
Water as in the element water not just like lololsingingaboutwater I don't really know. Moby Dick plays a part in it, several songs being about the story.
Water as in the element water not just like lololsingingaboutwater I don't really know. Moby Dick plays a part in it, several songs being about the story.
Water isn't an element. It's a compound. :raise:
It's both. Technically it is a compound, but it's known as an element among Earth, Wind, and Fire (And in some cases Light and Dark), but yes, it's H2O
It's both. Technically it is a compound, but it's known as an element among Earth, Wind, and Fire (And in some cases Light and Dark), but yes, it's H2O
Fair enough, in that sense I do see it.
It's both. Technically it is a compound, but it's known as an element among Earth, Wind, and Fire (And in some cases Light and Dark), but yes, it's H2O
I've never heard of Light and Dark referred alongside the classical elements, Ether is relatively common though
Water isn't an element. It's a compound. :raise:
All the albums are about the classical elements: Crack the Skye - Aether Leviathan - Water Blood Mountain - Earth Remission - Fire ???? - Wind Not sure about blood mountain and remission, I might have got that backwards.
I'm guessing wind'll be the concept for the new album.
