The Washington Times - Occupy Wall Street’s “People’s Library” settled a suit out of court with the city Tuesday, winning $232,000 for the destruction of 2,800 books during the police raid on Zuccotti Park in November 2011.
New York City will pay the $232,000 to cover costs of the destroyed property and lawyers’ fees. It will also shell out another $133,000 to settle two other lawsuits growing out the raid, the New York Daily News reports.
“This is not just about the money,” said Occupy’s attorney, Norman Siegel. “It is about holding the city accountable.
I wish Occupy hadn't failed so spectacularly.
I bet most of them were by Ayn Rand or copies of the communist manifesto :v:
But yeah it is good they they are paying for those, goes to show that the city somewhat respects that Occupy had rights and wasn't just a riot (even though they could have dealt with it better then the mass arrest on the bridge)

To be fair, it is still around, though to a lesser degree than two years ago.
its a dumb movement, I wouldn't blame the wall street guys for your student loans when you went to a 4 year college and spent over 100,000 dollars for a degree that can be gotten from a 2 year school, and that has no real use I'm the job market, also walstreet had little to do with bad government policymaking they should have been occupying d.c.
I always wondered what happen to Occupy. It feels as if it was more recent than it actually was.
what were they trying to accomplish? if you want change get yourself into politics and then get connections and then get into govermemt

I meant at its height - when they literally occupied the center of the city like a proper protest.

Good luck with doing anything corporations don't like in a country where so much funding for political parties comes from corporations.
The only way to get any real change, especially in the US, is through protest.
I never really understood half of their positions tbh...
Take the library thing- the ppls library the sign says.
As opposed to regular public libraries how? I mean what was the point? were they literally trying to set up a complete ecosystem of ppl separate from "society"?

Stupidest post I've ever read - congratulations.
the problem was and is that they actually do control the government via lobbying with money made with stocks and loans
they were the reason for the housing crisis and partly for the 2008 recession
Sad part is this isnt an "issue" in American politics, but gay marriage still is :pwn:

not really, government policy from deregulations in the 80s and the. subsequent expansion of loan programs in the 90s to try to bring housing to those who couldn't afford it allowed people to abuse the system and soaring housing prices perpetuated it causing a bubble, wallstreet wasn't 100% to blame as the occupy nuts believe, anyway they aren't going to stop and give up their evil money just because a bunch of nuts are outside
I wish Occupy hadn't failed so spectacularly.
I don't know, they probably swayed a lot of votes.

Yeah why doesn't everyone do this
the only party that's failed here are the american authorities who did everything they could to come off as aggressive and unforgiving as humanely possible.
despite a few isolated protests which turned violent (often with the provocation of the authorities), the movement remained relatively peaceful even after around 5 civilian deaths, which is very surprising considering what just one death has sparked in England.
Five civilian deaths should topple a government. If the people are so angry with the government that people are killed, the government should step down.
And I'm talking from personal experience - my country's entire government resigned over blood spilled in our capital in a protest against the government.
I just realized I used the word "government" five times in three sentences.

Haha, good luck with that. Any moment your protest goes out of proportion police will down it in no time. And if it is within frame, no one cares about your protests.

To whom? The other candidate in the bi-partisan government system?

Touché.
How do you even manage to destroy $232,000 worth of books in a single raid?
How do you even manage to destroy $232,000 worth of books in a single raid?
You don't. You destroy $5000 worth of books and get a $232,000 settlement.

Yeah it includes lawyer's fees so I'm pretty sure the actual damages are miniscule in comparison.
I bet most of them were by Ayn Rand
Being able to read Ayn Rands books for free? Oh the irony.

I wonder how Women voting ever started when Women weren't allowed in government.

Which country is this?
I wonder how Women voting ever started when Women weren't allowed in government.
Intermarry with powerful people, use money to fund long lasting and long running campaigns, etc.
Remember that the early feminist movement consisted of wealthy women who wanted to do things like vote and own land. Not much of a shit was given about the lower orders.
Which country is this?
Bulgaria.
Damn, it doesn't feel like a year and a half since OWS.
Great, now what's the settlement for all the small businesses they disrupted and looted?
I wish Occupy hadn't failed so spectacularly.
...it didn't?
