Elon Musk plans to launch 4,000 satellites to provide High-Speed Internet across the globe "for the
According to a person who was present, Musk outlined a new space venture centered in Washington state that he hopes will bankroll that ambition.
Inside the Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center Friday evening, Musk proclaimed “the launch of SpaceX Seattle” to a crowd of about 400 invited guests who reacted with rousing applause.
The majority of those present were hand-picked engineers identified by SpaceX recruiters as potential hires.
Also attending were at least two members of Congress and local government and state officials. Media were not invited.
that's pretty damn crazy but it's musk so i trust he can do it
Elon Musk does pretty much everything that I think of that a super rich person could do to better society while also staying rich.
high-speed internet across the globe, fuck yeah!
Satellite Internet has been a thing for a while now, but if this guy can do it properly and make it affordable for everyone, then good on him.
I hope he's got a solution for upload because that's always been the problem with satellite connections. Great on the downlink, but uplink was a dialup connection.
If he does, I can't wait to see Comcast and co shit themselves.
And if these satellites go up over Africa and other areas with very poor/missing infrastructure, lots of awesome things are going to happen (for them).
Soon there will be a new motto, instead of "we can do it" it will be "we musk do it".
Shit, this is crazy and sent many 90's dotcom companies bankrupt. That said, I hope it works out well. Too many places on Earth either don't have internet access, have poor internet access, or have few choices with internet access.
The implications for raising education standards in some places by allowing free access to the Internet (barring governmental censorship anyway) is pretty awesome. hope he succeeds.

I prefer " we do it, because we musk."

And if we had more people doing this shit we'd living in a different world.

The latency is still going to be bad.
Good for downloads, very terrible for (action) games.

Good for pretty much every scientist with some kind of fieldwork.

Basic internet connectivity is better than no internet connectivity.
If it was anyone else I'd call them insane :v:
This is one hell of a headline.

Yeah, can't wait to inherit wealth of all those rich dead uncles and Nigerian princes.
Elon Musk is like an irl Tony Stark, I bet if it was possible to build a flying armour he'd have done it.
Pretty amazing since I basically live in Seattle.
Why isn't there a kickstarter to donate to this man
I want him to have my money

He pretty much already does
Pretty much this. Satellite broadband for farmers here can have a solid 30mbps over optus d1/2(it's a satellite band name not the ISP you aussies) but the upload and the stability isn't great for some people who need low latency
These satellites will be low orbit so the latency should be quite a bit lower than normal satellite connections.

Whose saying he hasn't?
then i can post even better quality post. space internet!!!

when will they start brewing beer in space?
its what i like
That global satellite array could also be a viable relay array for any communications with a future Mars mission or potentially Martian colony.
Parallel channels to counter the bandwidth-degrading-distance.
I cant wait! Cool shit's about to happen, ladies and gentlemen.
Cool shit.

It depends on the satellite location. Geostationary orbit does have some seriously high latency, but in low Earth orbit satellite could reach less than 40 ms RTT
Now who will win? Elon Musk with SpaceX or Richard Benson with Virgin Galactic?
Elon Musk is my favourite rich guy.
Is there any reason why we couldn't just utilize current land infrastructure for upload only and then combine it with sat for download to get high speed and good latency. I mean, somehow utilizing both in its own right sounds like a complicated feat to me, but is it possible and would that solve the latency issue?
Is it just me, or does this seem like the beginning of Red faction...
I bet this is going to happen before I get the fibre broadband which was promised last year.
Is "were gonna build a mars base with the profits" short for saying we're going to make fuck-lodes of money off this?
