(Reuters) - The Boy Scouts of America voted on Thursday to lift a century-old ban on openly gay scouts in a major victory for gay rights activists, but the decision means a sea of change for an organization that depends heavily on faith-based groups. More than 60 percent of the group's National Council, comprised of some 1,400 delegates, voted in favor of ending the ban, effective January 1, 2014, the group said in a statement. A prohibition on openly gay adult leaders remains in place. The decision followed weeks of intense lobbying by gay rights activists and members of conservative organizations, many of them church groups that have traditionally formed the backbone of one of the nation's largest youth organizations. "I'm a happy camper," said Mike Harrison, 71, a former chairman of California's Orange County Boy Scout Council who voted to end the ban. "The process was a very civil debate... There wasn't any uncivilized behavior. People stated their case, passionately and from many different angles." He said that by Thursday it had become clear that there was a generation change in the organization and that "the younger generation of scouting just don't see it the way the old guard did."
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/24/us-usa-boyscouts-ban-vote-idUSBRE94M1A320130524 [t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/Double-alaskan-rainbow.jpg[/t]
i was not expecting this jesus christ this is great
"I'm a happy camper," said Mike Harrison, 71
lol
Pretty sure the ban still applies to gay Scout leaders though
Wow, that's pretty surprising. I remember hearing that some troops had lifted the ban, but not all.
Finally. Maybe Boy Scouts of America will be inclusive like other countries Scouts. My troop was made up of Athiests, Women and people who were probably gay and we did alright. Now all thats left is the child molestation hiding and the athiest ban.

Finally!
Gay scout leaders are still not allowed.
Gay scout leaders are still not allowed.
its a step jesus christ the facebook comments on this are just... wow. "as a christian I will never let my son be involved in scouts" "the BSA has died" "great can't wait for someone's kid to get his rear bumped in the tent"
I've never heard of any atheist ban...
Scouts are supposed to have a religion. It's part of the scout oath - a Scout is reverent.
I've never heard of any atheist ban...
Well Athiests and Agnostics can't participate in scouting as regular scouts or leaders. You can follow any religion or not but a belief in god is required.
Scouts are supposed to have a religion. It's part of the scout oath - a Scout is reverent.
Scouts in other countries take this near exact same oath which includes god but yet they allow athiests and everything is fine.

I'm basing this off of absolutely nothing.
I'd sooner rape my son myself than let some poofter in a forest vest do it for a merit badge! The nation finds this article SCARY!
Scouts are supposed to have a religion. It's part of the scout oath - a Scout is reverent.
We also swear allegiance to God in our national pledge, but I don't think anybody's going door-to-door to make sure we're doing it correctly. I don't really know anything about the Boy Scouts, but I had friends who went, and none of them are religious.
this is just another step in the gay agenda to brainwash all our children into choosing homosexuality!!! praise the lord and jesus christ and may he smite these sinners for being tolerant!
I've never heard of any atheist ban...
the BSA is like 80% mormon or something if I remember and many troops are based in churches so for the most part the unwritten rule is, A) you need to be a boy, B) you need to be straight C) you need to be christian. Or D) just don't bother telling anyone.
the BSA is like 80% mormon or something if I remember and many troops are based in churches so for the most part the unwritten rule.
Its not an unwritten rule. Its a policy.
I've never heard of any atheist ban...
"The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. In the first part of the Scout Oath or Promise the member declares, ‘On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.’ The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members." that's pretty much a ban for scouts also their bylaws section one http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/GuideToAdvancement/Appendix/CharterAndBylaws.aspx [editline]23rd May 2013[/editline] It may not be enforced, but it is a written policy and if you were to say to BSA corporate (not the best term but w/e) "hey buds i'm atheist/agnostic", or said it during the eagle scout board you'd probably get kicked out or fail to get eagle scouted, respectively.
Scouts are supposed to have a religion. It's part of the scout oath - a Scout is reverent.
my scoutmaster said something to the effect that being reverent only entailed respecting all religions, not necessarily following one. not sure if that is a policy held across the BSA though
watch as it's voted down also there's still the ban on atheists, so...
there's gonna be a few donuts punched
This is good news but remember - it only applies until they turn 18 in which case all gays turn into pedophiles and shouldn't be allowed to be scout leaders Oh and atheists will instill communism in our children

And atheists lack morals usually.
Pretty much everyone in my group is an atheist. A lot of groups in Australia change the Scout Promise to "To stay true to my word" instead of "To do my duty to my Lord." We just don't tell the higher-ups because they're asshole who can and will shutdown a group at a moment's notice.

It's okay to be a gay as a child but not once you grow up Great way of leading by example guys

I always found that to be some really over-nationalist borderline Orwellian business
Gays are more likely to bed pedophiles.
now there's a strange freudian slip
Boy scouts are lame as shit. I was in it and I threw my tent partners beef jerky at our little troops foodbox at like 1 AM since he woke me up to ask help with pokemon so I got mad and did that. Then we woke up to half the troops food being eaten by raccoons. Luckily my bacon wasnt eaten and I was the hot shit in my troop for bringing bacon and pancakes but some scrub went to empty the bacon grease after I cooked it but tripped and all the burning hot grease went all over him.
I'm an eagle scout. I'm pretty sure most of the people who were in my troop were not religious, many of them atheist. One guy even earned Eagle scout despite the fact that he was known to be gay. My troop was cool. [editline]24th May 2013[/editline]
Boy scouts are lame as shit. I had some friends singe their eyebrows off
