A new study has found that 17-year-olds with lesbian mothers had high school GPAs ranging between A-minus to B-plus, while having strong family bonds with their mothers, whom the teens consider good role models. The Williams Institute at UCLA, which conducted “Adolescents with Lesbian Mothers Describe Their Own Lives,” tracked 78 adolescents over a 26-year period. “These kids were planned and their lesbian mothers were very engaged in parenting,” said Nanette Gartrell, principal investigator of the study for the Williams Institute. “At the end of high school, the teens tell us that they have excellent grades, feel connected to their families and friends, and admire their parents.” She added: “As a psychiatrist, I can say that these are the types of child-rearing outcomes that every parent hopes for.” The research, which appears in the Journal of Homosexuality, indicated that these teens had very close friends that they felt comfortable informing about their lesbian parents. “They teach me to be accepting of all people on this earth, no matter what differences they may have,” wrote one of 38 adolescent boys tracked in the study.
Yeah, somehow I'm doubting the validity of this. Not that I have anything against LGBT people or anything, I just find this to sound like such a nonsense connection.
Yeah, the boys are happier. All of their friends wanna come over to their place to see if their mums kiss.
Yeah, somehow I'm doubting the validity of this. Not that I have anything against LGBT people or anything, I just find this to sound like such a nonsense connection.
Why not? When you think about it it makes perfect sense. Children growing up without a parent develop differently than children that have both parents - why wouldn't it work the other way?
Yeah, somehow I'm doubting the validity of this. Not that I have anything against LGBT people or anything, I just find this to sound like such a nonsense connection.
The thing is that lesbian parents generally plan their children. There are fewer accidental pregnancies and unwanted children, things that decrease the quality of care for the child.
Yeah, the boys are happier. All of their friends wanna come over to their place to see if their moms kiss.
Does the study mention anything about big closets that can fit a lot of people in?
Yeah, the boys are happier. All of their friends wanna come over to their place to see if their moms kiss.
every year my neighborhood does a little christmas gift tradeoff where we're randomly paired with another household and we exchange gifts. Last year I was paired with the lesbian couple down the street and I told them what I wanted and they told me what they wanted. I got them a vintage bottle of wine because they asked for something that they could hold onto for a long time and they got me a fancy Rolex I'm not complaining or anything, the Rolex is nice, but I think they misunderstood me. "I wanna watch" [sp]this is a joke, it didn't actually happen[/sp]
In other news accidental children are not as happy as planned children
Mommas' boys...
78 adolescents over a 26-year period
yeah I get that 2-mother families are pretty rare but come on, that's a fucking tiny sample size plus there's all sorts of other factors - lesbian couples that decide to raise children are already pre-selected to give their kids a better chance: if they're out, then they likely live in a tolerant place, and are slightly more likely to be outgoing individuals if they've deciding to raise a kid then that automatically gets rid of the whole problem of unplanned pregnancies and so forth, and since they can either choose which man to get impregnated by or go to a sperm bank, the man's genes are subject to much greater selection pressure, causing the offspring to have better genes on average. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline]
Journal of Homosexuality
yeah somehow that doesn't fill me with optimism
That has to be the most convoluted way you could possibly make that joke
That was the best way to make it. I thought it was serious until I got to the punchline and chuckled.

I looked it up and here's how it was, which is a lot more streamlined: My Neighbors, the lesbians next door, asked me what I would like for my birthday. I was quite surprised when they gave me a Rolex. It was very nice of them, but I think they misunderstood me when I said, “I wanna watch.”
I honestly doubt that just since the parents are lesbian means that the children are going to do better in life, it's like how potheads say that drugs cure everything and can rebuild the economy.
These kids were planned and their lesbian mothers were very engaged in parenting
This is definitely just good parenting, either that or the parents are much more tolerant and open minded about certain things.
The article never says "they are happier than children with straight/single parent households". In fact, it never makes any comparison. The deepest it goes is saying that these kids are generally happy.
I think it's a no-brainer that kids with TWO parents will do better overall. Two parents is generally a sign that all is well with the family. I think the argument is that some people think it has to be one male/one female parent. If they can show families with same sex parents still provide the same stability, then that ends that myth.
If I had to deal with two of my mom, I probably would've killed myself by the time I was 13. I am not joking.
Correlation does not equal causation.
Correlation does not equal causation.
but there's a pretty nice logical causative reason
Correlation does not equal causation.
what does equal causation then?
what does equal causation then?
Causality.
Not against it but I'd think there would be things only a father could provide via first hand experience, unless one of those lesbians turns out to be really fucking manly or something.
Not against it but I'd think there would be things only a father could provide via first hand experience, unless one of those lesbians turns out to be really fucking manly or something.
stop being an idiot there are plenty of people raised without fathers, and they don't all turn out to be monumental societal fuck ups, i think this gender role stuff is bull shit
stop being an idiot there are plenty of people raised without fathers, and they don't all turn out to be monumental societal fuck ups, i think this gender role stuff is bull shit
I never said they would be, I'm talking about gender specific things that are not teached in school and only a man would know about. General man tips.
yeah somehow that doesn't fill me with optimism
Because we all know the name of a journal gives you the best indication of the accuracy of its contents.
I'm talking about gender specific things that are not teached in school and only a man would know about. General man tips.
Are you fucking braindead?
Because we all know the name of a journal gives you the best indication of the accuracy of its contents. Are you fucking braindead?
Apparently, explain to me how I'm wrong and where a boy would gain 'man tips' if he has no father. Why do people keep coming to the conclusion that I'm against lesbians having children, I'm saying that there would be a lack of gender-specific things that really a women would not know about.
