Miniature brain and skull found inside 16-year-old girl’s ovary
A tumour containing a miniature brain has been found growing on the ovary of a 16-year-old girl in Japan.
The 10-centimetre-wide tumour was discovered when the girl had surgery to remove her appendix. When doctors cut the tumour out, they found clumps of greasy, matted hair inside, and a 3-centimetre-wide brain-like structure covered by a thin plate of skull bone.
Closer analysis revealed that it was a smaller version of a cerebellum – which usually sits underneath the brain’s two hemispheres. A mass on one side resembled a brain stem – the structure that normally joins to the spinal cord.

Well thats horrifying.
The miniature brain even developed in such a way that electric impulses could transmit between neurons, just like in a normal brain, says Shintaku.
NOPE.
Does this mean it was able to think?
Teratomas are weird, especially since they can have different dna
jesus fuck thats some SCP shit, poor girl
NOPE.

It was a partially formed cerebellum, so no.

when i think of lovecraftian horrors i basically just think of teratomas
dont google image search teratoma
The tissues of a teratoma, although normal in themselves, may be quite different from surrounding tissues and may be highly disparate; teratomas have been reported to contain hair, teeth, bone and, very rarely, more complex organs or processes such as brain matter, eyes, torso, and hands, feet, or other limbs
From wikipedia on teratomas
Imagine having a pair of functional fucking eyes somewhere in your body
Ive heard about tumor twins but this talking it to the next level
Holy fuck:ohno:
NOPE.

if you could read its mind all you would hear is endless tortured screaming
I initially thought this was indicative of an unknown pregnancy that resulted in a miscarriage, but
About one-fifth of ovarian tumours contain foreign tissue, including hair, teeth, cartilage, fat and muscle...
...one theory is that they arise when immature egg cells turn rogue.
it can apparently be caused by cells that simply start doing things they shouldn't be doing. Somehow I find that even more horrifying.

That's basically what a tumor is. Teratomas just get really freaky with it.
I wonder if you could apply pro-life arguments to shit like this.
NOPE.

Well it would be so underdeveloped that I highly doubt it. Even if it were further developed, abstract thoughts and having a 'soul' only arise after having learnt language. There's this case of a girl called Genie who was never taught language until she was rescued at 10 years old or whatever, but she was never able to grow up properly.

Feminist Egg?
'Fuck men, fuck your sperm, I'm gonna go this myself!'

I sure goddamn hope you cannot.

Teratomas are some real body horror shit
The girl didn’t experience any symptoms, neurological or otherwise. However, there have been a handful of reports worldwide of women with ovarian teratomas who have developed personality changes, paranoid thoughts, confusion, agitation, seizures or memory loss.
Some of these neurological symptoms can arise when the immune system recognises brain cells in the ovary as foreign and launches an attack, because cells in the woman’s real brain can end up being attacked as well, leading to inflammation.
Both facinating and horrifying at the same time. I'm glad the girl is okay though, how terrifying it must be to just randomly have major neurological issues from a tumor like that.

humans can asexually reproduce, store sperm and sometimes have generic memory however theses are all extremely rare and aren't really a trait of humanity at a whole.
Interesting enough, we have a lot of things that we don't use like scent glands at the roof of your mouth.
I guess they don't work on kids

so jesus was a tumor?

There is no chance for a teratoma to develop into a full functioning human, so no.

conciousness pretty much is impossible without coherent input (in the form of senses)
Fascinating. Being part of an underage girl, I have to assume the teratoma had her exact DNA? Imagine if a copy of your brain started growing inside you.
Ah Christ just the thought of this gives me stomach pains

That we know of, right? I mean, teratomas are cells acting on their own; would they not, in theory and given the proper climate to, essentially be able to mutate into a living form? It might be very fantastical to think of but if they can form the ingredients, surely they can bake cake?

It would just give you some insight.
"Grant us eyes, grant us eyes. Plant eyes on our brains, to cleanse our beastly idiocy" ?

It'd require for the cells to split and differentiate to an extreme degree, and I think there's some timing stuff as well, although I'm a bit hazy on the details.
In vitro you could probably finagle something out of it (with a lot of time, money, trial and error, etc.), but that'd break like every ethics law ever.
Isn't there a theory that the human species will eventually evolve to not need males? Maybe millions of years down the line rogue ovarian cells will be making more complete humans than a micro brain and skull :v:
Imagine getting pregnant randomly at any time in your life
