NEWS - DAVID TENNANT AND BILLIE PIPER RETURNING FOR 50TH ANNIVERSARY EPISODE

Doctor Who is 50 years old this year!
If you're new to Who, just watch from Rose to Series 7.2 and come back
Spoilers about episodes that have already aired are fine! Don't want to be spoiled when you could EASILY have watched the episode, don't browse this thread, simple.
What is this show about?
It's about the adventures of an ancient-age alien with two hearts (Binary vascular system) who managed to steal a form of transport from his planet while it was in the shop - a Type 40 TARDIS. He used it to travel and see the stars, usually with a young woman, one of which was his grand-daughter. Unfortunately, there was a reason it was in the shop, it doesn't work right. So our ragtag Time Lord - or "The Doctor" as he prefers to be called - usually ends up nowhere where he wants to go!
The current story arc is very spoilery. So I'll tag it, but everything about episodes that have already aired, other than that, will not be tagged. So read at your own risk.
[sp]It seems to center around a woman called Clara "Oswin" Oswald. The Doctor first ran into her when she was a crew member of an exploration vessel known as "The Alaska" under the name Oswin Oswald, a flirtatious, frisky genius. Unfortunately, she turns out to have been a post-conversion Dalek who convinced herself of delusions of humanity. The Doctor then was forced to leave her, left with one phrase. "Run you clever boy. And remember."
Months later, after having been separated from his then-companions Amy and Rory, he comes across her again. But... Victorian. She ends up falling to her death from a cloud high up in the sky, and leaves the Doctor with one phrase "Run you clever boy. And remember."
Hearing those words, he realizes something is up, and vows to track her down, eventually succeeding after she phones the TARDIS, somehow.[/sp] And thus begins the adventures of Clara Oswald and The Doctor.
But just who IS the Doctor? Well, there are 11 versions of him. Time Lords have the ability to be able to regenerate their entire body in a crisis, ending up wildly different between each incarnation.
The First Doctor: Played by William Hartnell (1963-1966, 1972), Richard Hurndall (1983)
Grumpy old man who kidnaps some school teachers by mistake. He's quick to run from trouble and try to avoid getting involved. Died being absorbed by a planet? Old age? I'm really not sure.
The Second Doctor: Played by Patrick Troughton (1966-1969, 1972, 1983, 1985)
Much sillier and a bit younger than The First Doctor. He was eventually put on trial by his own people and then exiled to 70's earth with no way off. He was also forced to regenerate.
The Third Doctor: Played by Jon Pertwee (1969-1974, 1983)
Third Doctor wore a cape and did Karate. He spent most of his time trapped on earth but eventually got off only to be killed by giant alien spiders.
The Fourth Doctor: Played by Tom Baker (1974-1981)
Possibly the most loved Doctor. Completely crazy. Tried to escape danger by using confectionery and wore a long scarf. Genuinely hilarious. Fell from a satellite dish during battle with The Master, died slowly (but cheerfully) on the ground.
The Fifth Doctor: Played by Peter Davison (1981-1984, 2007)
Really loved Cricket. Acted very human overall. Died from poisoning after saving a friend.
The Sixth Doctor: Played by Colin Baker (1984-1986)
Loud, rude and arrogant. Not a very popular Doctor at the time and the BBC blamed him for the shows falling reception so sacked the actor. This Doctor died after banging his head.
The Seventh Doctor: Played by Sylvester McCoy (1987-1989, 1996)
Yes Radagast. Pretty much the same sort of character but a bit more grounded. Shot to death by Chinese gang and then killed by american surgeon who didn't understand his biology.
The Eighth Doctor: Played by Paul McGann (1996)
He was a bit of a romantic. Honestly not much is know about him and we never saw him die as he only ever did a single story.
The Ninth Doctor: Played by Christopher Eccleston (2005)
On the surface he's mysterious and quite cheerful. But he's actually a bitter and vengeful war veteran. Some point between The Eighth Doctor and The Ninth Doctor was a massive Time War between Timelords and Daleks. As a result The Doctor is the last of his kind. His friend absorbed the whole of time into her head and he had to sacrifice himself to save her.
The Tenth Doctor: Played by David Tennant (2005-2010, 2013)
The show really kicked off while he was Doctor. He was like an eccentric scientist. A bit weird and silly and hyperactive but also acted quite human and emotional. While The Ninth Doctor was bitter about the Time War, this Doctor was just incredibly depressed and full of regret. He died absorbing radiation to save a friend while battling The Master.
The Eleventh Doctor: Played by Matt Smith (2010- ????)
Possibly the most alien Doctor of the bunch? He's very childish and barmy one minute but serious and broody the next. He's essentially a crazy old man in a young man's body. Fated to meet his end at Trenzalore, but this is merely speculation.
Because of time travel complications The Doctors always end up running into each-other So sometimes you get a story with more than one Doctor, the most recent was a special 10 minute episode where Doctor 10 and Doctor 5 meet. It's expected ALL Doctors (some recast or digitally imposed) will return in 2013 for the anniversary special.

What's the risk?
The Doctor can still die if he doesn't have enough time to regenerate. But the main sense of threat in the show isn't to The Doctor but the human companion he travels with. Every Doctor has had several human companions so I won't list them all. The other sense of threat is to the people that inhabit that place or time. The Doctor also has a series of arch-enemies:
The Daleks
Every Doctor has faced The Daleks. They were once a race of people like humans called Kaleds and Thalls who destroyed their own bodies through nuclear war. A Kaled scientist called Davros took the squid-like bodies of his own people and put them into unstopable overpowered tanks. From that moment on they were known as The Daleks and have spread across time and space wiping out everything that isn't Dalek. Iconic enemy.
The Master
An old childhood friend of The Doctors from his home planet. The Master is evil. He wants to completely dominate the universe and rebuild it in his image. He's also totally mad and loved disguises or hiding in plain sight.
The Cybermen
They were once humanoid too but destroyed their own bodies through cybernetic implants and now travel the universe turning anything that isn't a Cyberman into a Cyberman.
The Weeping Angels
If you don't know what these are I won't spoil it. I imagine most people reading this info are looking to watch the series for the first time and will start from 2005. So I'll let you discover what these guys like everybody else. When you're over a certain age Doctor Who stops being scary. Unless it's these guys.

Where do I start with a show that's FIFTY years old?
Spin-Offs
A show as long running as Doctor Who is sure to have at least some form of spin-off media!
Torchwood - Darker and Sexier, with all-bi main characters and death every episode (Except Series 4, but that's the whole point of the series)
Sarah Jane Adventures - Fluffier and Lighter, featuring old companion Sarah Jane Smith with her alien-clone son Luke, and his school friends as they fight budget-quality aliens
K-9 - Australian based show set in London, featuring a new K-9 who's teamed up with a teenage cyber-terrorist, a nutty anti-social professor with a makeshift TARDIS, a typical teenage girl, and a teenage mechanic in a Dystopian future, what could possibly go wrong?
It worked, cheers.
I don't really like the 'What is this show about? section of the OP at all.
It's spoilery and odd.

I could edit it if you PM me any suggestions but at this point, those details are a requirement for serious watching at this stage. If they don't know those details, they should

If they don't know those details, they should watch from the 2005 reboot.
You spoiled the Asylum of the Daleks twist, which was the best twist ever. You use the word 'bloody' too much.
the OP needs a big big disclaimer at the top: WATCH FROM THE 2005 EPISODE 'ROSE', DON'T SKIP TO TENNANT.
EDIT: There should also be a Torchwood watching guide in the spinoffs segment, EG, Watch the first two series of 'Who', then Series 1 of Torchwood, then S3 of Who, S2 of Torchwood, then it doesn't matter what order you watch them because they don't cross over after that.

Sorry, I've been watching too much Ashens, and he says the word "bloody" every 10 seconds, damn.
But I'd like to point out, there's been plenty of opportunity to watch the episode. If you come into a Doctor Who thread and haven't seen a single episode of Who, you're going to run into spoilers
Is Torchwood cannon?

I agree with you for the rest of the thread, but the OP? I'd come into a thread to read the OP to see if I wanted to watch the show or not. There shouldn't be major spoilers in the OP.
You don't put 'Voldemort dies' in the OP of a Harry Potter thread, for instance.
[editline]7th April 2013[/editline]
Is Torchwood cannon?
Yeah, not sure about Miracle Day but the rest definitely is.
Is Torchwood cannon?
Yes, it crosses over with Who quite a bit in the first two seasons
I agree with you for the rest of the thread, but the OP? I'd come into a thread to read the OP to see if I wanted to watch the show or not. There shouldn't be major spoilers in the OP.

Fine, I'll spoiler tag it. But again, everything in this thread about episodes that have already aired should not have to be tagged.
I've also added a warning about spoilers in the OP
And I think I would actually watch the Harry Potter films before going into a Harry Potter thread, its not like there isn't an obvious order
Also, a villain losing is not really a spoiler
That was just an example, you know what I meant. I hadn't watched Dexter or Breaking Bad before looking at their OPs, and there weren't any spoilers in there. Spoilers in OP = bad, Spoilers in thread if there's a warning in OP = ok
I am still very bummed out that Christopher isn't returning for the 50th. It always seems my favorite Actors don't return for extra work on their Characters. Such as Bill from Left 4 Dead and Christopher.

thankfully i'm not the only one who preferred eccelston

For all our sakes, I'm going to proclaim that it is not and everyone should agree. At least in Children of Earth, it was directly addressed why some things happen on Earth without interference from The Doctor and so on. But Miracle Day. There's too much to go unnoticed.

Originally it was a way to brush up on the basic details before watching from 2005.
I didn't put anything in after that as anybody who already watches will already know and anybody who hasn't already watched will find out.

I wish we could just forget Miracle Day but we're stuck with it.
The fans constant complaint "why didn't The Doctor show up?" is invalid though. He isn't sitting around watching just incase he's needed. Otherwise he'd be here every day. There was one wicked villain called Margaret Thatcher which the Doctor failed to stop. Ooh satire.
But you got all the SJA episodes where The Doctor never gets involved. We can assume Miracle Day was a fixed event and The Doctor already knew Jack and his team would resolve it.

These look fun. If I was still a kid I'd love this. It's okay though, one day I'll have children and I'll make them watch Doctor Who from the start and NOTHING ELSE.

And the thing with Jack's blood making people immortal.. Fuck that.
Gosh Chris is always the odd one out isn't he? He just looks so different from the others. He's one of those actors people would never in a million years suggest play The Doctor. I wish we started getting more actors like that, there's only so much you can do if you keep hiring actors that meet this pre-agreed conception of a "Doctorish actor"
[editline]7th April 2013[/editline]
Ooh. Apparently the new Cybermen don't stomp. Joy.
Here's the costume error I was talking about yesterday

How do you even fuck up that badly?
EDIT: I'm gonna call him Mad Eye Oody

Jesus now he's not moving I realse how much of a mess he is.
A Hath and an Ood had a baby. Then a classic series Silurian came along and had a baby with that.
They even gave him a big coat because they couldn't be arsed to make a costume for the body, aha. Oh Doctor Who production values, never change.
Don't forget the classic series recommendations:
