Online matchmaking client GameSpy is shutting down on May 31, which means that the games that still rely on it will have to either transition to a new solution or go offline. It looked pretty grim for a long list of games when we first heard the news, but since then most of the popular games announced that they will not go silently into the night. Today, we got the great news from 2K that there might be bit of downtime, but that Borderlands and the Civilization series will be transitioning to Steamworks.
Borderlands and the Civilization games are saved!

About time Gamespy shut down.
Bothers me a little they used a Borderlands 2 screenshot.
I don't think I've used Gamespy since like 2001-2002. Back in those days it was redundant because the games that it supported also had their own independent server browsers and master servers.
The only novelty it really had were IRC style chatrooms and buddy lists, both of which were also mostly redundant.
This is good, but what about Dawn of War!
Now someone get Halo 1 on steamworks.
great, now maybe borderlands will actually be playable

What are you talking about? Gamespy in Borderlands was so good even the pirates could play online.

Before that, fix the games netcode

The only game I used it for was Medal of Honor Allied Assault.
Steam yet furthers it's monopoly on games.
Steam yet furthers it's monopoly on games.
you say that like it is a negative thing.
there can be good monopolies you know?
Steam yet furthers it's monopoly on games.
Yeah the popular games with active communities games should just die off.
Steam yet furthers it's monopoly on games.
Last time I checked Steam wasn't the only place to get or play games.
Steam yet furthers it's monopoly on games.
mostly because it's a better service than Origin, but yeah it is true, Steam does hold most of the market's share

Basically this. Steam has awesome sales, it's not like they're putting up their prices because of it
Stronghold games not getting ported.
thought that said germany so i was kind of confused

The Dark Souls 2 PC release seem to suggest otherwise.
Oh god, how Steam DARE to offer good service!
That's a monopoly on a good selling of games, for sure.

Would you still think that monopolies can be good if Valve got a change in command and hiked up prices, installed spyware/rootkits on your computer and demanded always-online play for single player games? Remember that Blizzard went from battle.net to Diablo III.
I'm going to miss Gamespy. Back in its prime it was doing great stuff. So many matches of Warzone 2100 could be had instead of joining by IP.
I'll remember you fondly Gamespy o7
Of course it's bad that Steam has a quasi monopoly. Of course it's bad to let old but popular games die and it's a very, very good thing that they are porting their games over to Steamworks.
If you seriously think that Valve wouldn't be handling Steam better if they weren't market leader you didn't think about it hard enough. There are plenty of things Valve is doing wrong. For instance their support is terrible, their quality control is terribly, their refund policies are terrible, Greenlight is terrible, discovering games is very hard as there is no recommendation engine, etc, etc...
Don't get me wrong, I love Steam and I buy most of my games there (or at least activate them there), but it's far from perfect and we shouldn't cheer for them to become a complete monopoly. More competition is ALWAYS better for us. There can't be good monopolies, at the best of times they are tolerable.
Well, no one has offered something really better.
Origin is bad, Uplay is even worse...
All I can think of is GOG
Origin isn't bad it's just... all it has to compete with Steam are EA games. Which really isn't much.
Bothers me a little they used a Borderlands 2 screenshot.
Probably just grabbed the first Borderlands-related picture they could find in their press resources.
The Dark Souls 2 PC release seem to suggest otherwise.
What is this even referencing? A game came out, whoa Steam has a bad monopoly

Imagine if Obama suddenly went rogue and decided to declare WWIII by sending nuclear missiles to everybody else! Would you still think he's a good pressident?

Of course every single thing handled by humans is subject to those humans' morales (and their change of them), but thinking that everybody who wins some power is automatically going to use it for evil purposes is silly. Even more on the Internet, where changing your game provider can be done in less than an hour.

Honestly Origin is alright, the On The House program is great, but I haven't really checked the store as all my Origin games were either free, Humble Bundle, or registered from my old discs, but Uplay is goddamn horrid, at one point being actual malware.
Even on consoles it's shoved down our throats.

You can't completely change the circumstances of what a company does and then claim that they're bad because of a hypothetical situation, that makes no fucking sense.
