Mercury fingerprint of Pacific fish points to Asia coal power plants
Mercury found in high levels in deep Pacific Ocean fish such as swordfish has a chemical fingerprint, and it implicates coal-burning power plants in Asia, according to a new study.
A research team from the universities of Hawaii and Michigan looked at mercury in the flesh of nine species common to the massive North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, the largest ecosystem on the planet, at 7 million square miles.
Four years ago, the team found that mercury levels in such fish as tuna increased with the depth of the fish’s habitat. This time, they set out to find out why, and what forces were at play. On the way, however, they found evidence implicating coal. The results were published online in Nature Geoscience.

“People have speculated that the main source of mercury to the ocean is through atmospheric deposition, but people have also argued that it comes from sediments, hydrothermal activity, coastal sediment that’s moved from the coast to the open ocean. Our work suggests the main source is from the atmosphere.”
I like my fish with a dash of lemon and a pinch of mercury. Now if only we could find a way to preseason them with lemon too.

That is literally the cutest thing I've ever seen.
lol, and yet people always say I'm dumb when I point out how coal plants cause waaaaay more damage than cars. Why are we even allowing nations to use coal plants anyway?

Many countries lack the technology or the resources for other power plant and power production methods.

Also the most common alternative (oil) is needed for a fuckton of other things and still pollutes like hell.

"When live gives you lemons"
Australia is rocking coal fuel, no fucking clue why when we would have one of the best countries for nuclear, got the resources and a brilliant place for it to stay

I don't think anyone likes coal as an energy source. It's out dated and needs to be replaced.
