Previously, adverts could play at a higher volume level than the programme. The rules were taken up by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a year ago but the industry had a one-year grace period to prepare for them. Correspondents say the rules are meant to protect viewers from excessively loud adverts, which can seem intrusive. The FCC suggests that enforcement of the new rules will be driven by complaints, and viewers can report suspected violations of the rules on their website. The Calm Act applies only to TV adverts, and not radio programmes or shows on the internet. The bill was sponsored by California congresswoman Anna Eshoo, who told the Wall Street Journal in 2010 that it was one of the most popular pieces of legislation she had introduced in her 18 years in Congress. "If I'd saved 50 million children from some malady, people would not have the interest that they have in this," Ms Eshoo told the newspaper at the time. Championed by Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, it was approved unanimously in the upper chamber. President Barack Obama signed the legislation into law on 15 December 2010.
Thank Christ.
Ugh, we need this so bad in Australia.
THANK YOU
THE MOST GLORIOUS DAY OF MY LIFE.
And meanwhile in Canada, the ads are still fucking way too loud.

*Moves 2012 from "bad year" column to "good year" column.*
I was frustratedly trying to find a current equivalent of Billy Mays so I could claim in the title that they were found dead, but I failed and will now commit seppuku
Fucking finally
This is truly the best thing to happen to the country since everything.

No more waking up to the obnoxious as fuck Girls Gone Wild commercials
Now how will I wake up at 2 AM from Billy Mays yelling at me to buy things?
SUPER AMART IS HAVING A SALE HALF PRICE OFF ON EVERYTHING
There's only one thing worse than the Amart ads and that's the Coles adverts DOWN DOWN PRICES ARE DOWN
I think we already got this in germany, they are still too fuckin loud imo.
That's because it's impossible to speak German without shouting.
Fucking finally, sick of watching shows then all of a sudden
NEW DEAL BUY A SUV AND GET TWO FREE SPARE TIRE CHANGES NOW NOW NOW AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
It's even worse that I get those purposely annoying ads like those crazy car dealers from comedy shows.
Darn, I literally just found out about the setting in my TV to make everything the same volume.
Good, now Australia, please do the same!

Hooray, no more being waken up in the middle of the night thanks to some random loud ass infomercial. Seriously I don't know how many times I have been woken up by one of those fast talking infomercial assholes...

About time something like this happened.
The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (Calm) Act
is there someone that just sits around and makes up acronyms?
Pfft, I haven't watched cable TV in, like, a year. It's all internet for me and it is glorious.
is there someone that just sits around and makes up acronyms?
yellow escapist syndrome
is there someone that just sits around and makes up acronyms?
My dream job
Comedy Central will be a tad less absolutely painful and headache inducing to have on, now. Bastards make you turn the volume up to about seventy percent just to hear the dialog on most shows, but then the commercials blast out suddenly like they had broken the sound barrier.
Fucking finally. I was having this issue not three days ago. Fucking networks didn't 'prepare' for it, they milked the grace period for every 120 decibel moment they could. Here's hoping they soon introduce a bill that says there can be no more than 2.5 minutes of commercials every 30 minutes. It's really annoying to record an hour long show and skip 45% of it because it's all shoddy adverts.
