[release]Nintendo's third quarter financial briefing just spilled the beans on the recently spied Nintendo Network, causing Nintendo fans everywhere to collectively sigh, "It's about time." Company head honcho Satoru Iwata says the network will offer "competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content," and in the case of the Wii U, will introduce personal user accounts. Iwata stopped just short of confirming that the Nintendo Network will end the company's policy of tying downloaded titles to Nintendo hardware, rather than individual users, but mentioned that it packed an infrastructure that supports not only add-on content, but fully downloadable retail games as well.
"This concept was built into the design of the Nintendo 3DS, and we already have the necessary infrastructure," Iwata said, "We will prepare the same infrastructure for the Wii U. However, we have not decided the concrete timing of when we will start it." Iwata pointed to Mario Kart 7's community building features and DLC offerings in the upcoming Theatrythm Final Fantasy as an early look at how the Nintendo Network is trying differentiate itself from the outfit's existing Nintendo Wi-Fi connection services. Well
This is interesting.
Does this mean they can also patch existing games?
Will it be the console equivalent of Steam, though, in terms of usability?
"Personal Accounts for the Wii U" sounds a lot like having usernames and friend lists rather than that shitty "TYPE IN A 43 DIGIT FRIEND CODE TO JOIN YOUR FRIEND!!!"
yeah i dont know why they decided to keep that system for the wii it's really shit

Probably wii equivalent of xbl

It's because Nintendo is afraid of people interacting. What do you think of when you think of Xbox Live? Now bear in mind Nintendo is supposed to be "family-orientated." The two just don't mix.
Hope they don't screw it up somehow by making it family-friendly, which in Nintendo's case means disabling all in-game communication in an attempt to thwart pedophiles.
What I really want is for Nintendo to stop my purchased and downloaded virtual Wii games being hardware orientated only and actually give me freedom with what I buy. I honestly doubt there will be a way to transfer my downloaded Wii games to the Wii U if I happened to buy one.
10 years too late. Xbox Live was launched in 2002.
It's about time.
Yeah but the Wii has games that don't neccesairly include sports or shooting someone whilst insulting their mother.

You act like they never noticed xbox live
At least it's not Origin.
I wonder if they will make it so all retail games are tied to your account and cannot be sold on
So...DLC? Yay?

sweet, going to make the Wii U even better. though i never played games online, things like mario party, mario kart, and super smash would interest me being online more than some generic fps game

It was released in Japan with Pokemon Crystal. It was pretty much poor mans wifi. When you walked into a certain building and looked at the news you could see the save files and shit of all the other people who read it. You could also trade with people and battle. I think the service was only up for like a year, but still.
It was also the only legitimate way to catch a Celebi because it's the only way to get the GS ball.
Judging by how the gamecube had no online support at all...
If I recall correctly, the GameCube had internet capabilities, but only one game ever actually used it, which I believe was Phantasy Star Online.
nintendo just keeps making good things i like it
What I really want Nintendo to do is make a Pokemon MMO. That just has so much potential.

I'm pretty much wishing for that since we got our first modem. You know the ones that go *BEEEEEEEE--BOOOOOO--BEEEEEEEEE...* and so on.
Judging by how the gamecube had no online support at all, and the wii and ds had super weird friend code bullshit and terrible online support in general, you'd think that was the case...

The GameCube was at one point online compatible by using a GameCube Broadband Adapter or Modem Adapter, though only four games featured an online component which were Homeland, Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II, Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Plus and Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution. This online play was ended as of April 2007. Although the official servers for the PSO titles are now offline, it is still possible to play online on various private servers such as SCHTHACK. LAN gameplay is still available for the three titles that originally supported it as well: Mario Kart: Double Dash‼, 1080° Avalanche and Kirby Air Ride. There are some third-party PC applications such as Warp Pipe and XLink Kai that allows online play of these three games by tunneling the network traffic through a computer and across the Internet, though this is not supported by Nintendo.
Granted hardly anyone used it but the GameCube did have online play.
