Steam and GFWL do actually look quite similar.
GFWL is just Microsoft's shitty attempt at cashing in on digital distribution. Not to mention Microsoft deliberately puts restrictions on developers that use GFWL, and treat them just like they treat console developers: Forcing them to price DLC and free content. No sane developer should ever make their game run on GFWL.
The new GFWL is way better than the old one. The last time I've seen them, they offered great deals (S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC for 99 cents). But their payment options are limited and their demos are consisted of PC benchmarks.
I think everyone can agree that GFWL is absolutely horrible.

Of course they have to occasionally do some sales to go up against Steam.
Only good thing about Games For Windows Live is that you don't need the client running to play games you bought off the Marketplace. Valve are you listening
Only good thing about Games For Windows Live is that you don't need the client running to play games you bought off the Marketplace. a VAC ban only bans your steam games, and only from playing on VAC servers. Isn't that correct?
Where the fuck is instant messaging/chat? That is a fucking basic feature and if they implemented it properly as well as better support for joining friends ingame (less hackjob feeling), I may actually like it
Microsoft has today announced that they plan to improve Games For Windows Live.
Don't bother. [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] One would think that a huge company like Microsoft would have designers that know what they're doing. What basic functions and design features that should at the very least be included for a release.
Only good thing about Games For Windows Live is that you don't need the client running to play games you bought off the Marketplace. Valve are you listening
Except when you're running GFWL-enabled games (where you can use the ingame interface) you're actually running the client without realising. Try minimising and you'll see that it's running in the system tray.
GFWL won't allow me to save any of my Bioshock 2 saves locally. While playing, a GFWL error told me something went wrong in the saving process. I didn't know what to do, but I had to leave so I tried saving a few times before giving up and ending the game. Upon returning, I found I could not access the save as it had been corrupted, and now I can't even create a new save without a game crash (I have verified the game cache and done just about everything I can think of short of reinstalling completely) I've decided I will never purchase another GFWL game again, unless they make a complete overhaul of the entire system.

GFWL seems to be all set for being a "lighter" and more transparent service than Steam, with no huge client that you need to start in advance of playing. However it utterly botches this by somehow managing to become intrusive anyway, with that horrible dropdown-window, those constant login prompts and update screens, the connection dependability etc.
It's the update system for GFWL that gets me. They really need to fix that shit.
They should just drop GFWL all together. It's an annoying piece of shit and only bogs the game down. The marketpalce is fine though, I guess. They should maybe only keep that, but keep it on a site. I learned the saving part the hard way.. :suicide:
It also completely bars you off multiplayer if you aren't in any of the supported countries. I mean, what the fuck.
The only game I have ever played that was a GFWL was BioShock 2. I regret buying it retail to this day.
Every time i see GFWL they've changed how it looks completely. They can't make up their minds.
I wish GFWL was an alternative, the same way when you install chrome you can choose google bing or yahoo as the search
Steam and GFWL do actually look quite similar.
It looked more like Gog.com. The semi-transparent navigation bar at the top looks almost exactly like it.
microsoft has been saying that they will be improving GFWL since it first came out and it sure has gotten a lot better since then I tell you what! (not)
The only game I have ever played that was a GFWL was BioShock 2. I regret buying it retail to this day.
Microsoft forced that shit on the Steam version too.
a VAC ban only bans your steam games, and only from playing on VAC servers. Isn't that correct?
VAC bans by game engine. You cheat in CSS, you're banned from games using the engine. L4D doesn't count since it's a modified version.
Microsoft forced that shit on the Steam version too.
I really don't think Microsoft is "forcing that shit" do you honestly expect a developer redo part of a game just for the Steam version?
A big sign that GFWL is completely awful is that I have seen no GFWL fanboys ever. Even garbage like Daikatana has one or two.
A big sign that GFWL is completely awful is that I have seen no GFWL fanboys ever. Even garbage like Daikatana has one or two.
Check out the GFWL forums then. They're everywhere.
VAC bans by game engine. You cheat in CSS, you're banned from games using the engine. L4D doesn't count since it's a modified version.
but you aren't permanently banned right?
I think they are. Unless it's a special case or some sort.
