I don't think looking at a bright screen for 56 hours a week helps your eyesight

Who says that I turn the brightness to 100 percent? I leave it on 40%, stuff is still visible, doesn't hurt the eyes and it saves energy. It's a win-win IMO. Also the screen is a meter away from me so everything is save.

The only thing that can happen is his eyes becoming a bit dry because you blink less when looking at a screen.

The problem is that you pretty much stare fixed point all the time. Yes, your eyes usually wander around the screen, but it's still a flat panel you're looking at. It's strains your eyes pretty bad.
