HONG KONG (AFP) - Luxury fashion brand Gucci apologised on Friday (April 6) after warning Hong Kong's funeral shops not to sell paper fakes of its products, traditionally burned as tributes to the dead.Burning paper replicas of everything a loved one could ever want in the afterlife is an enduring tradition in Hong Kong - from mundane daily life items, including pairs of socks and false teeth to high-end status symbols like cars, smartphones and designer handbags.
Gucci sent letters to store owners last month asking them not to sell paper replicas bearing Gucci-like logos, saying it was an infringement of their trademark.
That led to criticism from some shops and customers who said the brand was interfering in an age-old custom they felt was harmless.
"We regret any misunderstandings that may have been caused and sincerely apologise to anyone we may have offended through our action," Gucci said on Friday.
The company said its letters were sent out as part of efforts to protect its global intellectual property and said it held the funeral traditions "in utmost respect".
"We trust that the funeral store owners did not have the intention to infringe Gucci's trademark. Accordingly, we did not suggest any legal action or compensation," the statement added.
It did not say whether Gucci would continue to ask shops to take the replicas off the shelves.
But a source close to the matter said most of the six stores that received the letters had agreed to stop selling the products.
"We hope to continue a positive dialogue with the sellers," the source added.
In chinese tradition, Heaven is reserved for gods, and Hell is for everyone
Basically there are 2 hells, the good one, and the bad one
And for the Bad one there's 18 levels
And for each level you have a judge for whatever crimes you commit
And appropriate punishments for certain crimes, like if you lie to your parents, you get your tongue cut out
But you are allowed to drink some tea from some old grandma and you get to reincarnate but the tea makes you forget everything
I know, we got one crazy hell

It's even starting to make the Gods wonder if maybe they should get a summer home or something, just so they can try out HellTindr.

Can you believe going to afterlife thinking you will have an iPhone and ending up with a paper one because your relatives were cheapasses?

strictly, they're just burning equivalents, back in those days they used to burn the actual things themselves. Then later over a period of time they started burning models of those things, first full scale clay versions, then scale clay models, which eventually became papier mache objects and joss paper.
If a paper model of an iPhone, for instance, is burned, your deceased relative's supposed to get the use of an iPhone for themselves in death. It's the symbolism that counts, otherwise people would still be burning the actual objects. It works out cheaper, too.
Someone create a deed to hell and burn it, we'll take that bitch over.
