Shit that's a hard question.

He alternates between character pieces and blockbuster/entertainment movies.

If I was going to go for his best performances, probably The Machinist or American psycho. Actually, his performance in the Fighter is outstanding, he carried a film that would otherwise be entertaining but bland.

It's impressive to see Christian Bale so skinny in a film in the Machinist, if anything it's the film that he put more dedication in.
