Los Angeles (CNN) -- Ted Williams, the homeless "golden voice" internet sensation, voluntarily checked into substance abuse rehab for his alcohol and drug dependency after admitting on a television show that he was still drinking, a spokeswoman for "The Dr. Phil Show" said Wednesday. Williams, 53, has been on a whirlwind spiral of publicity since a Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reporter videotaped him panhandling on a roadside. The video quickly went viral on the internet, and he was offered several announcing jobs, including a contract with Kraft Foods. He said in several broadcast interviews in the past week he has been sober for the past two years after years of addiction, a problem that separated him from his family and left him homeless for years. The decision to seek professional help came after "a lengthy one-on-one conversation with Dr. Phil," show spokeswoman Stacey Luchs said in a written statement, referring to show host Phil McGraw. Show officials did not disclose which facility Williams had entered for treatment. Dr. Howard Samuels, the CEO of The Hills Treatment Center in Los Angeles, said he was not surprised to learn Williams was still drinking, given that the experienced "such an extreme from having nothing to having money and fame in such a short period of time." "The hardest thing for an alcoholic is to have success," Samuels said. "Because the alcoholic, on a very deep level, has a very difficult time with success." Williams, who traveled to Los Angeles with his family, has taped three interviews with "The Dr. Phil Show," the program statement said. "The decision was made due in part to Williams' strange behavior over the past several days, which culminated in a physical altercation with one of his daughters at a Hollywood hotel," the statement said. "He was briefly detained by police and later released." Williams' third appearance with Dr. Phil, taped after his decision to enter rehab, will air Thursday, the statement said. His ex-wife, Patricia, and five family members will also appear on Thursday's episode "to share their version of the incident and why they feel Williams is ill-equipped to handle his sudden fame," it said. "They reveal that he has been drinking daily, despite his adamant claims of sobriety," the show's statement said. "If Ted is ever going to get better, he's got to be honest with himself and admit he's addicted to drugs and alcohol," show host McGraw -- Dr. Phil -- said in the statement. "I've told him it's not going to be easy and it's going to take a lot of hard work. It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction."
http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/celebrity.news.gossip/01/12/ted.williams.rehab/index.html?hpt=T2
Good.
Not a big surprise.
I kind of knew this was going to happen. Disappoints me. Necessary pun? Golden voice has been hitting the golden stuff all along?
Now he can afford one.
He needs a consultation with the Demoman
Him drinking doesn't surprise me. I mean, he was a homeless alcoholic and the only thing that probably stopped him from heavily drinking was having no money. Now that he's getting all these jobs he has all the money he needs for booze, not to mention all this sudden fame brings a shitload of stress, which would make him want to drink even more.
This man is like the gleam of light at the opening of a cavern, once homeless and out of work, today practically a celebrity receiving several job offers, wealth and fame. I wish not to see such a miraculous influential figure to throw it all away due to alcohol and legal trouble. I'm glad to see he is partaking in rehab, it means much to me.
I thought he'd change
I thought he'd change
Him going to rehab to fix his problem is a change.
I thought he'd change
You know he doesn't have to go to rehab? He could just keep drinking.
I thought he'd change
He did.. Until the media caught on. You do realize that most famous people resort to drugs; because they are famous and because of random issues that might be happening in their lives.. Ted has family problems to deal with, and now he also has the media shoved up his arse. Many famous people died from drugs- because they couldn't handle being famous, or all their problems are being spread around the media like that.
okay great good for him yippee wippee who cares anymore like yeah I admit the original story of him being discovered and getting off the street and finding a job and fame etc. was pretty sweet and a fine internet sensation but why do people still care he's just some guy with a cool voice now

That was quick.
Plan: Go to a school and learn a cool talent, get good and drop out, become homeless and perform said talent until someone videotapes you and posts it online. Get job offers and get big bucks.
Still doesn't excuse his family being asshole's to him. I would probably drink too if they treated me like that all the time.
Apparently drug rehab doesn't work anyways in a majority of cases. Good luck to him though. Alcohol is probably one of the most addicting substances out there.
I kind of knew this was going to happen. Disappoints me. Necessary pun? Golden voice has been hitting the golden stuff all along?
If you remember the video that started it all he says that he did drugs and drank frequently even though he was sober for 2 years. I'm surprised he lasted 2 years, this relapse was onset by his new life changing career.
Hes doing what all good celebrities strive for.
I knew he wouldn't last. But alas, still sad.
I knew he wouldn't last. But alas, still sad.
what? he's going to rehab. how is that sad? that's a good thing -- it means he's willing to give up a crutch on his lifestyle for the better.
Good. If he spirals into a nobody because of alcohol and drugs again I'll be pissed.
Come on man, pull your shit together. We love you.
Wow, that didn't take long. I thought he'd make it at least a month before things went south. He is trying though, which is good to see.
He has weak willpower
He has weak willpower
That, and it could be an alcohol addiction, not to mention alcoholism can be hereditary.
He's under a fuckton of pressure too.
Thing is hes got so much publicity and talent that im sure under all this pressure to perform "the voice" he just wants to relax and escape, so he drinks
Hes going to be on Dr.Phil again sometime today if anyone is interested.
