For Ready at Dawn, developer of PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886, it's a matter of quality, not quantity.Over the weekend a YouTuber called PlayMeThrough uploaded the entire game, including cutscenes, to the video site. Adding up the length of each video we get five hours and 30 minutes.
Last week I had a chat with Ru Weerasuriya, founder, CEO and creative director of Ready at Dawn, to discuss The Order's length after a previous report indicated it could be completed in just a few hours.
"I know there are numbers out there," he said. "I know why the question comes up. I know numbers have been put out there that are actually not right. It's impossible to finish the game in that time, so we know the numbers are wrong.
"At the end of the day, we're not going to comment on it. We can't stop people from writing the things they do. And we're not going to jump at every single mistake that is made out there. Every time somebody has the wrong impression of something we made, or somebody writes the wrong thing about what we did, it would be a full-time job to be like, oh no, that's not right. We make games. We do what we do for the players. And, ultimately, that's where I want to leave it."
Wow, I was kinda looking forward to TO, but I think I'll stay away til' it's cheaper

That's fairly short but I wonder what difficulty it was on if on easy or the like that can effect some of the play time.
it took me about the same amount of time to beat Metal Gear Rising and it was well worth it.
Isn't this really a normal figure for games released now if you power through a game it's going to be pretty short but you also miss optional things and plot.
The game looks interesting because of it's setting but it's apparent 30FPS is a huge turn off.
Game length is irrelevant as long as it doesn't overstay its welcome and as long as the game's actually packed with content. There are titles out there that are really short but would drag on if made longer like Metal Gear Rising, and there are some games that are proof that a simple title needs to remain short to be good (see Shadow Warrior).
I dunno maybe this isn't all bad.
Remember when Portal first run would take 45 minutes minimum?
Maybe this is another one of those games were it's experimental like Portal.
Portal didn't cost 60 dollars though

True, but TO seems to be quite cutscene intensive from what I've seen, which the playthrough time includes

He just went through the main portion of the game, didn't stop to listen to audio logs or NPC conversations. Another guy tried to do everything, including restarting segments to grind trophies, and he clocked at 9h.
From everything I read on reddit about this, apparently the 5.5 hour length is because the guy rushed through it with zero exploration and did the bare minimum to get to the next area/checkpoint/whatever. Basically he rushed through the game to put his video up first. While a few other people with early copies were reporting 9-14 hours, iirc.
Either way, I'm definitely waiting to watch streams of this before I buy. Unlike Bloodborne which I'm gonna dive balls deep into without a second glance.

Nice, 9-14 hours I can swing to

That's respectable.
I feel like this is one of those games where you just buy it on a big steam sale from 75% discount.
That's respectable.
9 hours is what it should be for skipping everything. The guy got 9 hours after doing all the collectables and stuff. I pretty much never 100% a game.

Ps4 exclusive.
apparently you can't skip cutscenes either, which removes pretty much any idea of replaying it more than once.

No, 9 to 15 should what it would be with fluff.
This whole idea that somehow singleplayer games need to be 9 hours long on just rushing alone is insane and ya'll have obviously forgotten how much terrain and shit repeated. Actually, hell, most singleplayer games that ya'll pine for that weren't open world were 9 hours or less.
True it didn't but Order is also much longer then Portal. As Ganerumo said, game time doesn't really matter.
Uh, from checking on forums and stuff the usual playtime for portal is 2-2.5 hours, it seems the order will be somewhere in 5-7 hours for a regular player.
However I'd argue that portal was an experimental game that wasn't even sold standalone, portal was also almost fully gameplay while the order will have like 2+ hours of pure cutscenes or so.
But you know what? If the order delivers an amazing immersive story with the gameplay that is on par with portal's gameplay, it will be easily worth 60$ for me no matter the short length. Sadly it seems really doubtful that will happen.

From what I know he didn't exactly explore every corner, but it was still his playthrought and he died a bunch of times. I value full lets play proof more than what a few neogafers are saying.
Still need to wait for release to know this for sure.

Oh well that's pretty dumb.
You can beat a lot of games in 5.5 hours if you are skipping all dialogue and such.
That's about par for the course these days.

For those of us who can barely afford to buy more than two or three full priced games a year 9 hours just isn't enough.
Actually, hell, most singleplayer games that ya'll pine for that weren't open world were 9 hours or less.
Exactly. Outside of RPGs, games were usually never long anyway outside of a few special cases like Deus Ex.
That said, the value all comes down to if it's fun enough to replay or not.
How are you getting that number, I'd agree if you include the bonus chapters then yeah I can see how you'd get that but I was only on the story. Which is yes 45 minutes minimum.
2 hours seems pretty reasonable to me if you're going in blind. Just because you did it faster doesn't mean that's the average.

I'd be pretty darn impressed if some guy would do less than 1 hour on his first playthrought. Most people on forums and such are reporting around 2 hours, I even checked some lets play times and it comes close to 2 hours.
I'd be less concerned with how short the game can be and more concerned with how shitty the enemy AI is. I haven't seen baddies this dumb since GoldenEye.
Just check this shit out. Jump to 9:50 if you're up for cringing.

b-but 5.5 hours is more CINEMATIC
Title is actually misleading the 5 hours isn't just the gameplay but the cut scenes too, says it in the first few lines of the article. I'd avoid this game since it looks like its plagued with technical issues, needs to be in a letterbox, 30fps lock and stutters.

10:25 Haha. I could watch him sprint backwards all day. He literally is trying to sprint forwards while sliding backwards.

Collectables are a terrible way of padding out a game.
HL2 didn't have collectables. It takes a good 8 hours to rush through, 13 hours on average if you aren't rushing.
Quality > quantity
I don't see how this applies to a bog-standard cover shooter with two fifths of its length in cutscenes
5 and a half hours sounds absolutely fine for a game like that. There are numerous other problems I have with it though. The $70 price tag, the bad framerate, the extreme letterboxing, the unskippable cutscenes and above all the boring gameplay. At least judging by the gameplay video posted above it looks like a less fun Gears of War (=without chainsaw guns and huge muscle mountains shouting at each other).
Edit:
Make that $80 where I live.

Unskippable cutscenes, just so no one mistakenly thinks this guy did. Heres the playlist for the whole thing: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlBoxwve3-ZEy3pPYBI4xlQ6dCcXmWwfX
